Kindness Is Precious
The sound of glass breaking is instantly recognizable. I’d been telling my best friend Missi a silly story and had spun around in the living room when I heard that sound and froze.
When I looked down at the carpet, it was covered with tiny pieces of red, pink and clear glass. Missi said. “Oh, no, not the vase,”
“Why? What did I do?” My face reddened.
“Abby, that glass vase was one of the few items my relatives brought when they came to America.” Missi replied nervously. “If you’d broken anything else in the apartment. I would have gladly said I did it. But you’ re going to have to tell my mom that it was your fault, and she’s going to be really mad.”
I was terrified. I’d destroyed a priceless family heirloom(传家宝). Why did I have to spin around like that?
We gathered up the pieces. I kept saying that maybe it could be fixed, but Missi said gently it didn’t look possible. I insisted we keep the pieces. The glass was so fragile. Some of it broke even more as we tried to sweep it up carefully.
Would her mom yell at me or punish me? Would she tell me I couldn’t stay in their apartment for the weekend? I couldn’t stop playing those fifteen seconds over in my mind, me spinning fast and the sound of glass crashing. The only thing I could think of to say was “I’m sorry, ”
A couple of minutes after six, we heard a key turn in the door. Her mom was home.
Right from the start, we could see she was in a good mood. “Hello! It’ s hot today. I want to treat you girls to that frozen yogurt(酸奶) I know you like. Let’s go! ” her mom said, She pointed at the open door.
“But before that. I need to tell you something,” I said.
“We can talk at the yogurt place,” her mom said.
“No. I need to tell you now. It’s important,” I insisted. I could feel my voice shaking and tried not to cry.

When I was a baby, my parents gave me anything I wanted. I would play with a toy for a while, get bored, and ask my parents for a new one. Then my dad died when I was 2, and I got even more stuff as my mom, friends, and family gave me more and more stuff to try to make me feel better. My mom continued to treat me to whatever I wanted until I was seven and my world crashed.
That was when the real estate market crashed. My mom had thought buying houses was a good idea as a way to invest her money to take care of us. After the crash, I went from the kid who got a fine iPod and who had the coolest house, to almost having nowhere to stay.
Since then, when I would ask for a new toy or bike, or even to see a movie my mom would say “I’m sorry, honey but we really can’t afford that right now.” But my mom had grown up in a family where money was never a problem, so this change was as big for her as it was for me. My constant requests for toys and video games deepened her concern about our financial situation. But I wasn’t used to hearing “no.” So, for a year or two, I kept asking for things whether I really needed them or not.
Then something happened that would change my way of thinking forever. My mom had been working really hard all year, just to pay for the necessities, like our rents, and water and power bills. When she asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I said that I wanted a new video gaming system. I didn’t know that it was expensive. All I knew was that my friends had them and that I wanted one, too.

I never thought that I understood her. She always seemed so far away from me. I loved her, of course. We shared mutual（相互的）love from the day I was born. I came into this world with a head out of shape because of the hard labor my mother had gone through. Family members and friends wrinkled their noses at the disfigured baby I was. But no, not her. Nana thought I was beautiful. Her eyes twinkled with happiness at the ugly baby in her arms. Her first granddaughter. Beautiful, she said.
Before final exams in my junior year of high school, she died. Seven years ago, her doctors diagnosed Nana with Alzheimer’s disease. Seven years ago, our family became experts on this disease as, slowly, we lost her.
She always spoke in broken sentences. As the years passed, the words she spoke became fewer and fewer, until finally she said nothing at all. We were lucky to get one occasional word out of her—beautiful. It was then that our family knew she was near the end.
About a week or so before she died, she lost the abilities for her body to function at all, and the doctors decided to move her to a hospice, where those who entered would never come out.
I told my parents I wanted to see her. I had to see her. My uncontrollable curiosity had taken a step above my nervous and emotional fear.
My mother brought me to the hospice two days after my request. My grandfather and two of my aunts were there as well, but all hung back in the hallway as I entered Nana’s room. She was sitting in a big, soft chair next to her bed, eyes shut, mouth hanging open. The medicine was keeping her asleep. My eyes darted（看）around the room at the windows, the flowers, and the way Nana looked. I was struggling very hard to take it all in, knowing that this would be the last time I ever saw her alive.

Kevin had been eagerly waiting for the holidays to arrive. His mother had kept on hinting that there would be a big surprise for him during the vacation.

When he was doing the finishing touches, Max entered the room with a cola bottle. He slipped on some water, spilling cola all over the painting and totally ruining it.
The next day was even worse.
Everything was peaceful until the evening. It all started when Max put the dirty clothes in the washing machine. After some time, Kevin heard some strange sounds from the washing machine. He went to check and found that Max had put his best pair of shoes into the machine, along with the clothes.
One day, Kevin was looking through the newspaper when some interesting news caught his attention. He read it aloud: “The world-famous philatelist (集邮家) Dick Brown’s stamps were stolen last week from his house. Several other stamp robberies also have taken place, and police suspect that all the robberies are linked.”
This piece of news concluded by warning all stamp collectors to keep their stamps safe.

Teenage independence is heathy, but I worried if I didn't find a way to bond with my girl soon, I might never be close with her again. She'd be 18 in the fall and had already convinced herself she didn't need me anymore. Maybe she was right. No matter what I did, I couldn't seem to reach her.
