1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One day my friend Lily and I were talking about some parties that we had attended. Then suddenly I remembered that our best friend Emma’s birthday was next Saturday and we had not planned anything for her birthday!

At once we started discussing what we could do for Emma’s birthday. It suddenly came to my mind that we could throw a surprise party for her. I suggested that we could do it at my house as my parents and my brother were going to a farm and I was going to stay home. We also realized that nobody’s parents would allow their children to throw a party at their own houses as they would get dirty.

After that, we started deciding what things we could do at the party and what we could give her as a present. Finally, we agreed to give her a bunny (兔子) house as Emma has a baby bunny but she did not have a house for it.

The next day after my parents and my brother left, I invited Lily to my house. While Lily was coming, she ran into Emma, which made Lily nervous.

She thought that Emma would get suspicious (怀疑的) but thankfully Emma did not suspect a thing. Until the time Lily arrived, I gathered all the decorative (装饰的) items (物品) I had. I saw the cake which Lily had baked and it looked amazing.

I started decorating, while Lily began sending the invitations to our friends, and then she also joined me to decorate the room. When we finished decorating, we got very tired. So we decided to do the rest of the things the next day.

Finally, the day came. Everybody started coming and they were very excited about the party. Then I called up Emma and told her that a cat was stuck in (被困在) a tree in my back yard so that she would definitely (一定) come to my house to help me rescue (拯救) it. Later, we all hid (藏) in different places at my house.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The MP3 has become a new fashion on campus. I had long dreamed of owning a MP3. The more MP3 owners were on campus, the stronger my desire (渴望) became. Finally, during one of my monthly visits home, I begged my parents to let me buy one, “Dad, Mom, I ... I want to buy a MP3 ... , the one for …”

I swallowed (吞咽) the rest of my words. Did I really need to explain what a MP3 was? Surely everybody knew!

At first there was no response from my parents. But my little brother replied eagerly, “Me too!”

Then finally my dad spoke, “What! What is it for? This little stuff breaks down soon after you get it! It’s an absolutely useless expense (花费) …”

Then, I had an idea. When the summer vacation came, I lied to my parents that I couldn’t stay at home, because the school had supplementary (附加的) programs. As a result, I earned my money for a new MP3 through my part-time job.

I was at home the night before my new school when Mom came into my room. She sat on my bed, and patted me on the shoulder. Then she handed me a small box. “Take this. Don’t tell your father ... Now, study hard, okay?” she said softly.

“Mom, how did you ... ?” I asked.

“It’s from my own savings. Your father doesn’t know.” I sat alone for a long time with my new MP3, weeping (哭泣) silently.

When I went back to school, I decided to give up my part-time job so that I could study harder for my parents, for my dream. My motivation (动机) to study has never been so strong.

Jeremy Hampden has a large circle of friends and is very popular at parties. Everybody admires him for his great sense of humor — everybody, that is, except his six-year-old daughter, Jenny. Recently, one of Jeremy’s closest friends asked him to make a speech at a wedding reception. This is the sort of thing that Jeremy loves. He prepared the speech carefully and went to the wedding with Jenny. He had included a large number of funny stories in the speech and, of course, it was a great success. But as soon as he had finished, Jenny said to him, “Daddy, I don’t want to stay here any longer, even one more minute! 5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开以语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Go home and ask your mummy about your blind brother! I am surprised you didn’t know that he is as blind as a bat!” Hearing Nathan’s words, I wanted to land a blow on him for making fun of my two-year-old brother, David, but I was more desperate (渴望的) to find out the truth.

With a misty (模糊的) vision, I ran home as fast as I could. Still out of breath, I questioned, “Is David blind?” Mother turned to me with tears in her eyes. “Yes, he’s born blind.” It was a heartbreaking moment. I knew clearly the dream of showing David my cool soccer moves or playing video games with him ended cruelly. “Why did you keep the truth from me? I often wondered why he didn’t look at me or why he was always tripping over (被绊倒) things and I thought it was because he was still too young...” Before I could continue any further, mother hugged me and cried, “I’m sorry, Caleb. Dad and I just didn’t know how to tell you.”

Suddenly, it struck me that David was blind but he could still hear the whole conversation. Not wanting him to be affected by it, I stopped crying and went forward and embraced him. “I love you so much, David.” Worry crept upon (开始影响) me: How hard life would be for him!

Little did I know that David was to inspire (鼓舞) me so greatly.

As David grew up, he was fairly strong-willed. Despite the challenges that he faced, he continued to attend the school for visually impaired (视力受损) children. He insisted he would take the bus home on his own. Often, he would walk through the main door, looking sheepish (不好意思的) and saying the same phrase, “Sorry Mum, I am late. I boarded the wrong bus again.”

Tough as life was, there was always silver lining (一线希望) of misfortune. Despite not being able to see, he could play a piece of music after listening to it, being played once on the piano. He even dreamed of playing solo (独奏) one day on stage. Luckily for him, the school had discovered David’s extraordinary (非凡的) talent.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Grandmother Bonnie called out to Amy as she finished setting the table and served them dinner. When Amy didn’t respond, Bonnie went to the young girl’s room and pushed the door open. Amy sat at her desk with her headphones on, drawing a picture.

“Are you drawing those strange pictures again?” Bonnie yelled. “Have you finished your homework? Your teacher called me today and told me you’ve been ignoring her homework!” she shouted angrily.

Minutes later, Amy walked into the kitchen and quietly sat at the table. They began eating dinner in silence. Suddenly, the doorbell rang.

Bonnie answered the door to see a man in his early 40s standing outside. It turned out to be Mr. Henderson, a famous New York-based cartoonist. He explained to Amy he received a letter with some pieces of her artwork and was so impressed with her talent. In fact, he wrote Amy letters, but never got an answer.

Amy noticed Bonnie moving nervously in her seat, and realized why the letters had never reached her. Her grandmother kept them hidden from her.

“I’ m here with an offer for Amy,” Mr. Henderson continued. “We are accepting applications for our arts training program this summer. I would personally teach the students the art of cartoons and everything related. For that, Amy needs to pass a test, and then she’ll have to spend her summer in New York learning under me. If everything goes well, she will be able to join my team later and seek her dream of art.”

“Really?!” Amy was so excited. But Bonnie refused because she promised Amy’s late parents to raise their child well and make her an educated person. Mr. Henderson sighed and pulled out a file from his bag, “It’s a test. I know your Granny is against it, kid. But if you manage to finish it and hand it over to me by 10 a.m. the day after tomorrow, I can take it to my manager,” he added as he gave Amy an encouraging smile and left the house. Amy decided to finish the test after school the next day.

Ear Potatoes

“I think the bathtub (浴缸) is just about full.” My grandfather shouted.

“Okay, Grampa!” I answered and quickly picked up the cool-as-could-be soap crayons (蜡笔) my grandparents had for the bathtub. My grandparents always had the coolest toys for us grandchildren. At that time, I was six years old and it was the first time that I stayed out with my grandparents.

“Alright, Gwen. Just be sure to clean well behind your ears. You don’t want to start growing potatoes behind your ears, do you?”

“Potatoes?” I stopped dead in my tracks and turned to look back at my grandfather.

“Yep, potatoes. You know if you have too much dirt behind your ears, potatoes just might sprout (发芽) and start growing there,” my grandfather explained as my eyes widened.

“But I don’t have potatoes behind my ears, Grampa,” I ran my fingers along the backs of my ears.

“I thought I saw just a couple sprouts starting earlier.” My grandfather took a quick look. “Yep, right there! Sure enough, I see two little sprouts. You’d better wash them nice and good, Gwen.” My eyes remained wide as could be as I nodded rather doubtfully since this was the first time I had heard of this.

Why have my parents never warned me this could happen? I sat in the bathtub, washing my ears while drew plentiful drawings all over the bathtub walls with the soap crayons. I used up nearly an entire bar of soap washing behind my ears that evening, just to be sure I got those little potato sprouts good and cleaned away.

I did not forget this bit of wisdom my grandfather had given me for years to come, and I was always very careful about cleaning behind my ears.

A few years later, I was at another fun-filled sleepover (夜宿) with my grandparents. After I got out of the bath for the evening and finished brushing my teeth, I pulled out the little handheld mirror from one of the drawers in the bathroom and placed it behind each of my ears, looking very careful for signs of potato sprouts.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day, Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let's go and see!”

“No,” said Henry. “Let us go quietly home and not meddle with (插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me.”

“You are a coward (懦夫), and afraid to go,” said Robert, and he ran. Henry went straight home and in the afternoon went to school as usual.

But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together. Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored (忽视) the other boys' laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Everyday after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.

A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

After graduation, Jason went to work in a big business. The schedule was very tight and he was so busy working, travelling from one place to another, that he was always on business for weeks without going to hid mother’s home. And this year, he hadn’t seen his mother for months. Mother’s Day was coming up. He would have managed to go back home, but this year he was just too busy and too tired. One day when he was driving in a small town, he saw a flower shop. He said to himself, “I know what I will do. I’ll send my mother some flowers.”

He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a boy talking to a girl in it. “How many roses can I get for five dollars?” the boy asked. The girl was trying to explain that roses were expensive. Maybe the boy would be happy with something else.

“No, I have to have roses,” he said. “It has to be red roses, because my mum likes them best.

It is Mother’s Day. I want to get something special.” He was stubborn.

The girl in the shop looked at the boy and was just shaking her head. Something inside Jason was touched by the boy’s voice. It seemed that he wanted to get those roses very much. Jason looked at the boy and said to the girl that he would play for the boy’s roses.

The girl looked at the boy and said, “Okay, I will give you a dozen red roses for your dollars.” The boy almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran out. It was worth more than fifty dollars just to see that kind of excitement. Jason ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have them delivered to his mother. After that, with a sigh of relief, he drove down the road.

Not longer after his driving, he saw the boy who got the flowers just now. Jason stopped his car and wanted to offer the boy a lift to his home. The boy thanked Jason but didn’t speak for a while, and then he sighed, “I don’t go home now. I am going to the place where my mum is.” Seeing Jason was a little puzzled, the boy continued in a sad voice, “She died months ago, leaving me alone. How regretful I am that I didn’t stay with her enough when she was alive! I was always putting myself in the first place. And now, I want to be with her, but nowhere can I find her.”

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Hurry and get dressed, Shelly,” Mom said. “The sun is shining. Let’s go riding!” Her cheerful voice went through the closed door to my room.

Mom knew I was on the phone with one of my friends. The last thing I wanted to do on that Sunday afternoon was ride a horse with my mother. “Why can’t she just stay out of my life?” I thought. She came to every one of my volleyball games. She even taught at my school. Wherever I went, there she was. When I was little, I liked it when Mom was protective and when she took part in my activities. But now I didn’t like it. I was sixteen years old now! I didn’t realize that I came to an age when a teenager could easily rebel (叛逆).

That afternoon after hanging up the phone, I was sitting there thinking, “What is all this horseback-riding business? Mom isn’t even a horse person! She just wants to know what I’m doing every minute.”

Halfheartedly, I pulled on my riding shoes, and then went over to the bedside table. My hand touched the necklace that Mom had given me for my last birthday. “I’d better wear this, or she’ll ask where it is,” I thought. Although I wasn’t interested in it, I picked up the necklace marked with words: Sweet Sixteen. Then, I put the necklace around my neck.

By the time I got to our farm, Dad had already put a saddle (马鞍) on our horse, Charcey. And Mom was climbing onto the horse’s back. “Mom, what are you doing?” I said. “You’ve never ridden Charcey before! She is a big horse.” “I cannot believe her!” I thought. “She’ll do anything to be part of my life. And I just want her out of it!”

With great efforts, Mom finally climbed onto the horse’s back. Before Dad could give her guidance on how to ride, Charcey was out of control and suddenly ra n away. Too frightened and inexperienced, Mom couldn’t control Charcey.
