1 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Emily was a shy and quiet student in Greenfield High School. Emily was known for her quiet behavior and her love for literature, often found lost in the pages of a book during lunch breaks.

One day, as Emily walked through the hallway, she noticed a colorful poster announcing an upcoming English poetry competition. Her heart raced with excitement at the prospect of showcasing her talent, but her mind was immediately flooded with doubts. “What if my poem is not good enough? What if everyone laughs at me?”she thought to herself, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment.

As the days went by, Emily found herself caught between her desire to participate and her fear of failure. She talked with her best friend, Sarah, who had been by her side since they were little. She was known for her outgoing personality and her ability to make everyone feel included.

“You have a gift, Emily, ”Sarah said reassuringly, her blue eyes filled with encouragement. “Don’t let your fears hold you back. You never know what might happen unless you try. ”

With Sarah’s support, Emily decided to take a leap of faith and submit her poem for the competition. As the day of the event drew near, she felt a mix of nervousness and expectation. She spent hours perfecting her poem, carefully choosing each word and line to convey her emotions. She practiced her poem in front of the miror, trying to perfect her delivery and expression.

But despite her newfound confidence, Emily couldn’t shake off the feeling of doubt in her mind. These thoughts consumed her, making it difficult for her to focus on anything else.

It was during one of these moments of self-doubt that Sarah came to her rescue once again. “You’re an amazing writer, Emily, ”she said, her voice filled with warmth and sincerity. “Your poem is going to be incredible. Just believe in yourself. ”With Sarah’s words in her mind, Emily felt a renewed sense of determination.

Every Saturday, Bibi hung out at her grandma’s laundry and dry-cleaning store while her mom worked. Bibi loved being with her grandma, but she wanted to do more than just draw and read. “How about I write down what people bring in and pin a number to it?” Bibi offered. With Grandma nearby, she did fine. But the next order was an enormous bedspread. Bibi checked it in, but when she went to lift it off the counter, it wouldn’t move. She tried moving it, but it toppled over on her. “I’m OK!” She giggled from under the soft material. Grandma lifted the bedspread off her and smiled. “Why don’t you draw for a little while,” she suggested. “You’re such a good artist”. Bibi sighed. “But I wanted to help you.” Grandma didn’t want her to handle the hot presser or the iron. She could put the stiff cardboard into the ready washed shirts, but that was about it. “Why don’t you draw a picture of more customers coming in?” Grandma joked. “Maybe that would help!”

Bibi went outside. It was a clear fall day. The last leaves were starting their lazy drift to the ground. She spotted her babysitter, Stephanie. Stephanie was painting big letters on the window of the hardware store. “Stephanie!” Bibi called. “You’re going to get in trouble.” Stephanie laughed. “The high-school cheerleading (啦啦队) is painting windows for our football game next weekend. Some of the shop owners said we could.”

“Does that paint wash off?” Bibi asked. “Yep. It’s just cornstarch (玉米淀粉), soap, and food coloring,” said Stephanie. Bibi saw other kids from the high school painting designs on windows up and down the street. GO, TIGERS said the window of the nail salon in huge letters. HEAR US ROAR! said the window of the milkshake shop. “I can help you!” Bibi called to Stephanie, her heart beating fast. “I can draw!” “Sorry, Bibi,” Stephanie said. “I’m out of paint, and I have to get home. Thank you, though!” Bibi was so disappointed. She stared at Grandma’s windows. They were bare.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was in the afternoon before the end of the Second World War that Antonio Black, who was twelve, caught sight of a beautiful brooch (胸针) in a shop window. The brooch is so beautiful that he was unwilling to leave the store until he had purchased it. But it was too expensive — $5. His family was very poor and his parents struggled to make ends meet. Five dollars would buy almost a week’s food for his family.

Antonio couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Susan. Slim and beautiful, his mother was the center of the home and the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children, but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.

Nevertheless, he opened the shop’s door and went inside. Standing proudly and straight in his flour-sack (面粉袋改做的) shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time?”

“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “People around here don’t usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should keep for a while.”

Antonio respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would be surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering (锤打) from a side street, Antonio suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Antonio knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece. That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Where is it? We’re going to be late!” Janice searched the house crazily for her wallet. “Josh! Did you hide my wallet? We have to be at Grandpa’s for his birthday party!” Josh, Janice’s four-year-old younger brother, smiled innocently at her, but his cunning (狡黠的) eyes gave himself away. She tried her best not to shout. Grinning (咧嘴笑) like a cat, Josh reached under the sofa, pulled out her wallet and held it over his head. Janice grabbed it.

Ten minutes later, they hurried to the train station. Red-faced and sweating, Janice let go of Josh’s wrist and removed the sweat from her forehead. The train arrived. Her smile froze when she realized that the train was packed with passengers. Grabbing Josh’s hand, Janice boarded the train. She commanded, “The train’s really crowded, Josh. Behave yourself, stick close to me, and no monkey business!” Josh nodded, holding tightly to a rail. Janice smiled.

When it was time to get off the train, Janice quickly pushed her way through the crowd to get onto the platform. “We made it!” Janice said, turning around. Josh was nowhere to be seen. The crowd was flooding out, but Josh was not among them. “The train doors are closing,” then came the electronic voice. Soon, the crowd on the platform died down. The last thing Janice saw was Josh’s little anxious face at the train window: Just as Janice was about to call out Josh’s name, the train disappeared from view. “Josh!” Janice screamed.

Janice’s mind was transported back to when she was lost at the zoo. She could still vividly remember the towering figures surrounding her and none of them were’ familiar. “I don’t want Josh to go through that same bitter experience,” Janice let out a sigh.

Janice took out her mobile phone, ready to call her mother. However, midway, she decided against it. Her mother, who was far away in France on business, could do nothing but get restless. Janice paced up and down the platform anxiously.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Among the decorative things in a fifteen-year-old girl’s room, one stood out—a bright blue vase (花瓶). Not a perfect or beautiful vase, it’s broken in several places. The owner of the vase has carefully repaired it, but cracks remain. If this vase could talk, it would tell the story of two girls and a friendship.

Amy and June met on an airplane on their way home from Bangkok where their fathers, who were business partners, were attending meetings. June sat behind Amy. Halfway toward home. Amy turned around and gave June a bright blue vase. June accepted it. They smiled shyly at each other. On that day, a simple friendship between two four-year-old girls was built.

Years flew by. Amy and June grew up together, played together, studied together and, naturally, became closest friends. They supported and comforted each other whenever the other faced sadness, embarrassment, etc.

However, life isn’t a bed of roses. People change as they grow up. Sometimes these changes are hard to accept. And even the friendship can be destroyed. When Amy was 14, she admired a group of very popular girls in her and June’s school. Thus. Amy began hanging out with them and regarded them as her good friends.

Although June was hurt, she tried to be understanding. She was still there for Amy each time Amy found the popular girls didn’t seem to like her and needed a shoulder to cry on. But Amy wasn’t there when June needed her.

Upset about the state of their friendship, June finally invited Amy to her house to talk. When June tried to talk about her difficulties and her problems, Amy turned her back on her by saying. “Later.” Instead, Amy asked June for ideas for what she could do to be accepted by the group of girls. June became angry.

She shouted, “What am I to you, Amy? Your friend or just your little dog?” Amy was annoyed and shouted back. “That is it. June! I hate you!”

Amy rushed out of June’s room, shutting the door hard behind her.

Elisa studied her reflection in the mirror. She was wearing a green top and blue ieans.

changing clothes again but decided against it. “What’s the use?” she asked herself as she sat back on the bed.

“Don’t remind me.” Elisa thought to herself. It was not just the first day of school. It was Elisa’s first day at a new school. Picking out clothes for the first day of school was hard enough when you already knew your classmates. It was even harder when you would ever meet them for the first time.

“Elisa!” her mom called out. “I see the bus coming down the street!”

“This is it.” Elisa said to herself. She jumped off the bed and ran downstairs. Her mother stopped her at the bottom of the steps.

“I know you’re nervous about starting the first day at a new school.” her mother said.

“Remember my words: Be friendly to others and soon they will too.”

Elisa had her doubts. but she did not mention them. She put on a brave face and said. “It will be okay.” Then she hugged her mom and ran outside. where the bus was already waiting.

As she climbed on the bus, she was surprised to discover that she was the very first person on board. Elisa was happy to avoid other people for as long as she could. but she knew it would not last long. She took a seat near the back.

As the bus continued on its way, Elisa watched with a growing sense of anxiety as other kids filed on the bus. It seemed like everyone already knew each other. She had spent the past week worrying that other kids would make fun of her, but being ignored felt just as bad.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成—篇完整的短文。

Growing up, I rarely heard people in my family say, “I love you.” We’re the kind of people made uncomfortable by expressions of love.

Recently, I took my ten-year-old daughter and fourteen-year-old son to visit the great grandma in the nursing home and on the drive there I shared stories about her with the kids. I told them how Great Grandma was bright but grew up in a time and place where women, especially women from rural Tennessee, had few opportunities.

Great Grandma was kind and generous, but I told my kids she could be competitive, too. For instance, when I was a kid, she never let me win at cards.

The Great Grandma I described, the one from my memories, is a stranger to my kids. To them, she’s a small, white-haired woman with dementia (痴呆) who eats only chicken noodle soup and can still kick their butts (屁股) at Scrabble but needs to be reminded of their names and to turn on her hearing aids. We’re all fond of the current version of Great Grandma, but visiting her in a nursing home feels foreign to me. She’s weak and dependent, and I’m surprised at the situation because she’s no longer like the version of her that I know.

On the day of our visit, Great Grandma expected company, so she opened her door as soon as we knocked, greeting us with a big smile, telling us to come in even if she wasn’t certain who we were.

She began our visit by showing us pictures of blankets she gifted to others, and proudly showed us a blanket she was working on now. After that, we took Great Grandma out for a lunch of chicken noodle soup.

At the car my son helped her into the front seat, asking gently, “Are you in?” Then he shut the door and carried her wheelchair to the trunk of the car. When we returned from lunch, perhaps inspired by her brother’s concern, my daughter offered to get Great Grandma’s walker when my son volunteered to help Great Grandma out.

Back in Great Grandma’s room, the kids began to chat with her.

9 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Rain pattered outside, and the low rumble of thunder was felt more than heard. Inside the cozy living room, 10-year-old twins, Jake and Ben, huddled on the couch, browsing through their favorite songs on the tablet.

“Hey Jake, I think we should perform this one,” Ben said, pointing to a classic track they both loved.

Jake hesitated, “I love that song, Ben, but it has high notes. You know I struggle with those.”

Ben smirked, “That’s why we’re a team, right? I’ve got the high notes, and you’ve got those amazing low tones. Together, we’re unbeatable.”

Jake sighed, feeling a pinch of anxiety. The school’s annual singing contest was only a weekaway, and they had decided to participate as a duo (搭档). Both brothers were talented, but while Ben was confident and had an impressive range, Jake often battled stage fright and doubted his abilities.

“Okay, let’s give it a shot,” Jake finally agreed, taking a deep breath.

The following days were filled with rehearsals. After school, they would lock themselves in their bedroom and practice. Their parents would occasionally hear their harmonies, smiles playing on their lips, proud of their determined sons.

However, not every rehearsal went smoothly. There were times Jake would miss a note, and Ben’s high notes would sometimes waver. There were disagreements over pacing, key changes, and even the kind of emotions they should evoke during specific parts of the song.

Yet, what made their bond unbreakable was their unwavering support for each other. When Jake felt nervous about the impending (逼近的) performance, Ben would reassure him. “You have a gift, Jake. Trust in it. And if you ever falter, remember I’m right there with you.”

On the other hand, when Ben struggled with his high notes, Jake was his pillar of strength. “Just relax, take a deep breath, and let it out. We’ve got this, bro.”

Days passed, and the day of the contest arrived. The school auditorium was buzzing with excitement. Families, teachers, and students filled every seat. As Jake and Ben waited backstage, Jake felt his heart racing. The murmur of the audience was deafening, and the weight of the stage lights made everything seem surreal.

“Hey,” Ben whispered, squeezing Jake’s hand, “remember the time we sang in front of our entire family during the reunion? It’s the same, just a slightly larger family.”

Jake chuckled, feeling a bit better. “Yeah, a ‘slightly’ larger one.”
