A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE

The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.

The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.

Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Grandfather was a wise and honorable man. His house was not far from ours, and I would visit him often going home after school.

No matter how rotten I had been, 1 could tell Grandpa anything. My secrets were safe. He always understood. He loved me.

I remember a time when a bunch of us were playing baseball in the field behind Mrs. Ferguson's house. I hit one pitch (投) just right and . . . slam! It was a home run that soared (急升) high and away, and ended up breaking Old Lady Ferguson's kitchen window! We all ran!

Walking home, my best friend, Tom, asked, “How will she ever know who did it? She's blinder than a bat!” I decided to stop by Grandpa's. He must have known something was up by the expression on my face. I felt ashamed. I wanted to hide. I wanted to bang my head against a tree a thousand times and make the world just go away- as if punishing myself could undo things. I told him about it.

He knew we had been warned many times about the dangers of playing where we shouldn't. But he just listened.

“I was wrong,   I told him, with my head down. “I hate myself for what I did. I really blew it. Is there a way out? Will she call the police?”

“Well,” he said, “she has a problem, just like you. I'll bet if she knew you cared, she would be sad to know that you're afraid of her. I'll bet she wishes you would give her a chance... a chance to be understanding, It's your decision, ” he said, shrugging his shoulders. “Just so I don't say the wrong thing, is the plan to pretend nothing happened? Just keep quiet and carry your little secret around . . . hide what you're not proud of?”

“I don't know, ” I sighed. “Things might get worse. . . . ”

The Summer I Learned to Really See

It was a muggy(闷热)end-of-summer dog day in Missouri. I was preparing to go after the mail—about a mile's distance, through fields and forests, across a river, from our farmhouse, in which three generations of my family lived.

“Take the bucket with you,” my grandmother said, handing me the very familiar bucket.

“What for?” I asked, petulantly(使小性子). The berries had been picked, and it was too early for wild grapes, too late for roasting ears(穗).

“You'll find something to fill it with,” she said, her blue eyes sparkling with anticipation.

I didn't want to take the bucket. It would be a burden to me. Twice a day I'd carried a bucket for milking. With it I'd carried feed to the chickens, salt to the cows, sugar to the neighbors. I'd had enough with carrying with the bucket!

Nevertheless, I took the bucket. Halfway to the mailbox, I set it down beneath a pokeberry bush(胡桃树). I needn't carry it the whole way, I reasoned. There was no mail. When I got back to the bucket, I saw that a few ripe pokeberries had fallen into it. With childish ill humor, I picked off enough clusters(花串) to fill the bucket, even though I thought they were good for nothing.

“Aren't they just lovely!” Grandma exclaimed admiringly when I set them on the kitchen table. She squeezed out the juice of the berries and we used the lovely red ink to paint rings on our fingers and pen letters to distant cousins.

When I went to mail the letters the next day, Grandma again told me to take the bucket along. This time I carried the bucket a little farther than the previous day before setting it down. There was only a sale catalogue in the mail. When I got back to the bucket, I dropped it in. But I felt vaguely uncomfortable, remembering the pokeberries. I caught sight of a bunch of peppermint(薄荷) growing close to the path. Funny, I had passed it every day and never noticed it before. Peppermint just doesn't spring up overnight. I picked a bucketful, its fragrance seeming to cool the day. Grandma was pleased with the peppermint. She liked to chew it and make tea with it.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Wrapping paper flew everywhere as Cali opened her gift. Then, a pair of shining skates caught her eyes! Cali thanked her uncle and aunt but looked embarrassed. She didn't know how to skate.

Aunt Lisa, who seemed to have read Cali's mind, told her not to worry and that learning skating was fun, while Uncle George promised to take her to the ice rink(溜冰场)and teach her to skate.

Cali wasn't sure. Sometimes she had a hard time learning new things. She looked again at the skates and imagined herself skating on the ice cheerfully. It should be fun! Then she nodded, "Let's do it!"

The next day all of them went to the skating rink. Cali's eyes twinkled in excitement when watching the other skaters around her. She sat down on the bench and put on the skates. Uncle George then placed her helmet on and fastened it.

"Time for us all to hit the ice!" her uncle said, "we will hold your hands and you stand between us." Cali did so and made her first step onto the smooth ice.

"Whoa! This is slippery!" Cali nearly fell over, but her aunt and uncle pulled up on her arms and she found her balance again. She grinned and tried taking a few steps. Her legs wanted to slide out in front of her, so she made her steps smaller. That seemed to help.

"Good, Cali. Now try to glide on one foot for just a second longer on each foot as you walk," suggested Aunt Lisa. Then Uncle George skated in front of her while Lisa guided her from behind.

"Skate to your uncle now," she said, pushing her on the back a little to get more speed. Cali glided unsteadily towards her uncle, taking small steps and holding her arms wide for balance. Her uncle caught her and gave her a hug.

"Well done, Cali!" he said. "Now try it on your own." Cali wasn't too sure. Everyone else was rushing past her. Skating seemed easy for them. She started to get nervous. She lost her balance.

The young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer's showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted.

As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father said in a loving tone, "My dear son, I am so proud of you. But I hope you can remember: never spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; but remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for. Sometimes we don't realize the good fortune we have or we could have because we expect 'the packaging' to be different. What may appear as bad fortune may in fact be the door that is just waiting to be opened." The young man was inattentive (不注意的) to his father's words and responded impatiently. "OK, I know. Now, where is my gift? Dad." His father handed his son a beautiful wrapped gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man's name carved in gold. Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, "With all your money, you give me a Bible?" He then stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible.

Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful wife and a lovely son, but realizing his father was very old, he thought perhaps he should go to see him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make the arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take charge.

How can we celebrate the people we've never met who helped get us through the worst year of our life?

When I was a child, my grandmother often expressed the importance of communicating with everyone. When she walked down the street, she spoke to everyone. It did not matter if you were elderly or a child, or if you spoke English or Spanish. She had a smile and a conversation for you.

My grandmother's wisdom opened my mind to having a pen pal. This hobby-exchanging regular letters with someone on the other side of the world that you may never meet in person used to be popular in the 20th century. But many people consider the practice outdated in age of Facebook. Today, when I reveal that among my long time friendships is a relationship with a pen pal, with whom I communicate solely through long emails, people find it odd.

It isn't odd-it's wonderful. My relationship with my pen pal is one of the most valuable friendships I have ever had. even though I have never met her in person, or even heard her voice.

It all started in 2013. I was on my way to USC to meet Kerstin Zilm, a German radio personality who wanted to interview me about being a struggling student at Long Beach City College. After the interview, a woman named Renate reached out to Kerstin, inquiring how she could find me and help me financially with college. I thought it was great that Renate, who lives in Germany, wanted to assist with my education.

At first, Renate and I emailed each other twice a month. She wanted to know a lot more about my life growing up in Watts, my attempts to further my education, and whether there were ways beyond finances that she could help. I did not have a specific answer for her last question, but her moral support was important. With someone encouraging me and sponsoring my education, my spirits were greatly lifted up.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One rainy day, Lily, a sad little girl, was looking out of the window. Her mother was doing her usual housework. She had been busy preparing dinner and washing clothes. Her daughter, not old enough to go to school, had wanted to play outside, but it was raining. The mother told her little girl to get some paper and a pencil to draw pictures. She hadn’t noticed her daughter was very sad.

Lily was the only child in the family and had no brothers or sisters to play with. She sat on the sofa with her pencil and paper, looked out of the window and began to draw a picture. She drew the window with rain streaming down the glass. Then she drew a little girl in front of the window with ribbons in her hair. The mother passed by as she was going to put the clothes into the dryer. She told her daughter that her drawing was pretty. Lily said thank you, but she still wanted to go out to play. Her mother said, “We have discussed that already. You can’t. It’s raining.”

Lily continued to draw the picture, while her mother went back to the kitchen to check on dinner. The mother could see her daughter’s drawing across the glass door that divided the two rooms. In the drawing, a little girl had big tears rolling down her cheeks. The mother thought about the events of the day in her mind.

Several times that day, Lily had asked her mother for permission to go out and play. The rain had prevented her from going out. She had asked her mother to play and watch cartoons with her. Each time, her mother was too busy with things she had to do. The mother felt guilty, and realized the little girl in the drawing was her daughter’s self-portrait. So she walked into the living room.

8 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事,

My dad, George, only had an eighth grade education. A quiet man, he didn’t understand my world of school activities. From age 14, he worked. And his dad, Albert, took the money my dad earned and used it to pay family expenses.

I didn’t really understand his world either: He was a livestock trucker, and I thought that I would surpass (超过) anything he had accomplished by the time I walked across the stage at high school graduation.

Summers in the mid-70s were spent at home shooting baskets, hitting a baseball, or throwing a football, preparing for my future as a quarterback on a football team. In poor weather, I read about sports or practiced my trombone (长号).

The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work in his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and we were off, riding down the field looking for weeds to spray with chemicals. After a short way, the farmer stopped and pointed at a weed which we missed. Then we began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identify different grasses like cockleburs, lamb’s-quarters, foxtails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn’t sure how much it would amount to.

At home, my dad said, “A job’s a big step to growing up. I’m glad you will be contributing to the household.” My dad’s words made me realize that my earnings might not be mine to do with as I wished.

My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn’t interested. I decided it was not fair that I had to contribute my money.

10 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

"Almost showtime!" Ms. Tuttle called. "Costumes on and smiles out!"

I frowned at myself in the dressing-room mirror. I was wearing white tights and a white swim cap that hid most of my hair. I was one of 10 snowflakes in my dance school's Winter Wonderland show. I'd learned in science class that no two snowflakes are alike, but all of us snowflakes were wearing the same costume.

"Grandma, I really don't feel like being in the show," I said.

Grandma Lani looked up from my ballet shoe. "Why, my grandchild?”Grandma Lani is Japanese American, and she has always lived in Hawaii. "You love to dance."

I used to love to dance. Then Ms. Tuttle gave the part of the Snow Queen to Christine Abrams. Christine got to wear a feathery skirt that fluttered like a cloud every time she twirled(旋转). And she got to do a dance onstage all by herself.

The snowflakes just ran to look like a blustery snowstorm. I sighed. "I don't like our dance. And no one would notice if I wasn't there. There are so many of us.”

“I would notice. So would your parents.” Grandma paused as Christine walked toward us holding a basketful of pretty snowflake ornaments(装饰品).

Christine handed one to me. "Break a leg, Jack" she said, smiling. That means good luck. The ornament had my name on it.

“Thanks. You too,” I said. It was nice of her to paint everyone's name like that.

Grandma Lani smiled at Christine. "What a beautiful costume!” Christine left, her skirt fluttering behind her.

I hung my head. Grandma took my hand. “What's bothering my Jack?”

“You came all this way,” I whispered. "And you won't be able to tell me apart from the other snowflakes.”
