1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Emma had two exams that day — physics and history. She really hated physics. It was her worst subject. Alice looked at her, and then looked away quickly. Emma thought Alice looked pleased, because she didn’t have a problem with physics, she didn’t have a problem with anything...Miss Perfect!

“I thought we were friends, but she hasn’t spoken to me for two weeks now. she promised to help me go over for the physics exam too, but then she’s forgotten all my calls and texts. And when I rang her house, her mum just told me she was busy.” Emma thought angrily. At that moment, Mr. Read asked all the students into the exam room.

Emma couldn’t answer some physics questions. Suddenly she saw Alice sitting two rows in front of her. Emma couldn’t believe it! Alice was holding her phone on her knee under the table and reading from it. Is that how Alice always got such good grades? She felt really angry at Alice, and thought about telling the teacher, but...“Stop writing,” said Mr. Read and started to collect the exam papers. Oh no, Emma hadn’t answered two of the questions. She was going to fail again!

Emma wanted to talk to Alice at lunchtime, but she couldn’t find her anywhere. Emma went to the library to prepare for the history exam, which was her favorite. But she couldn’t concentrate. “Unfair! Alice was getting good grades by cheating all that time.” She thought about telling a teacher, but everyone would hate her if she did that. Just then, Mr. Read walked past her table. “Mr. Read...”

Emma was sitting behind Alice again in the history exam that afternoon. Mr. Read wanted her to look at Alice and agreed if she saw that Alice was cheating in the exam.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

That night, I quarreled with my mother, and then rushed out of the house. While on the road, I remembered that I did not have any money in my pocket. I did not even take my cell phone with me to make a call home.

At the same time, I went through a noodle shop, and I suddenly felt very hungry. I wished for a bowl of noodles, but I had no money!

The seller saw me standing before the counter and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”

“Oh, yes... but I don’t have money on me...” she replied. “That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man, “Come in.”

A few minutes later the owner brought me a steaming bowl of noodles. I thanked the man and started to gobblle (狼吞虎咽) up the delicious food...then I cried silently.

“What is it?” asked the man kindly.

“Nothing. I am just touched by your kindness!” I said as I wiped my tears. “Even a stranger on the street gives me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, after a quarrel, chased me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so mean and cruel!”

Hearing the words, the seller smiled “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. why were you not grateful and why did you hurt your mom? You should say sorry to your mom.“

I was really surprised after hearing that.

Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, and my mother has been taking care of me since I was little and I have never felt so, not even a little.

An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old son. Suddenly a crow (乌鸦) landed on their window.

The father asked his son, “What is this?” The son replied, “This is a crow.”

5 . Bert Katz, my father-in-law, celebrated his 90th birthday in November 2020. Bert loved sports and was an enthusiastic Yankees(an American professional baseball team based in the New York City) fan, so it was no wonder that over the years, he was an avid(热切的) listener to WEAN radio and, in particular, the afternoon show hosted by Mike Francesa.

Bert had health issues in his later years that limited his mobility, and when he lost his eyesight three years ago, his attachment to his radio and Francesa became more pronounced. Of course, Mike will be leaving on Dec. 15, 2021 after 30 years at the station. Mike lives in the same community where I work on Long Island, and I have gotten to know him over the past 20 years. So when my father-in-law was approaching his special birthday last year, I asked Mike for a favor: to call Bert and wish him a happy birthday.

Mike agreed without hesitation. Two days before the special day, Mike stopped at my workplace. I called Bert at his nursing home and put Mike on the phone. It was a complete surprise to Bert. Mike spent more than 10 minutes wishing Bert a happy birthday and, of course, talking about the Yankees.

When my family celebrated Bert's birthday two days later, he couldn't stop talking about the phone call. Over his lifetime. he said it was one of the nicest things anyone had ever done for him. Unfortunately,Bert' s health declined(衰退) and he passed away on July 13, 2021. But even in his final months in the hospital and nursing home, he always had a radio set to WEAN to listen each afternoon to Mike Francesa. And he also had the memory of that special phone call for his 90th birthday.

6 . It was the day after Halloween when my grandmother was admitted to the hospital with the worst headache she'd ever had. While posing in our costumes the night before, we knew something was wrong, just not how wrong.

Grandma's house was the central gathering place of my family, Sunday lunches, birthday dinners, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas—all were our traditions, with her as hostess. While my parents were busy running their small business, there were many nights when Grandma fed me and put me to bed in her spare room, until they came to get me. I spent my summers at Grandma's and I went everywhere with her. I couldn't imagine a time when she wouldn't be around me.

Then November 1, 1991 began her month-long stay in the hospital—she suffered from a rare infection called nocardia asteroides. After being born in the year of the Great Depression, living through World War II, raising three kids, and being widowed at the age of 48, Grandma never expected to live into her seventies. The infection in her brain seemed to confirm that she wasn't long for this world. But that's not the end of her story. A team of doctors successfully removed the abscess(脓肿), and Grandma even made it into a local medical journal. Her doctor called her "the brain lady".

Grandma celebrated her 85th birthday in March this year. In the almost 23 years since her recovery, she's seen two of her four grandchildren get married and welcomed three great-grandsons. Although they damage something in her house, she loves it when my two boys come over. And while I know they make her day, seeing her love blossom for another generation makes my day too. Happy Grandparents' Day to my amazing grandmother!

7 . Love your parents

Even if you think that your parents are mean-spirited at times, loving your parents is a normal and fulfilling (满意的)part of life. You love them for the fact that they created you, raised you, and are in part a source of who you are. Here are some ways to love your parents.

1     A gentle "good morning" and "I love you" will warm a coldest heart. Remember that they brought you into this world. Without your parents, you might sill wander at an unknown corner in an unknown world.

Respect them more and cherish(珍惜)these moments. You can use these moments to learn from them when you're off on your own. It's OK to get angry but angry actions don't help you or your parents. Act calmly, cool off, journal about your feelings, or talk to a friend.     2

Obey their requests. It will make your attitude better and earn you more respect from them. It may seem like you are going through hell when you don't get what you want or you have to clean. However, you had better remember they keep a roof over your head when it's cold, raining, snowing, or too hot. Understand that parents are human beings and make mistakes.     3     Since you can forgive your friends, why not forgive your parents?

Keep company with them. Do things with your parents like watching TV, or go somewhere with them.       4     Listen to their old stories and learn from them. You will find they are your teachers in this way or another.

Some people simply may not be able to love their parents. .    5     Look for help if you are being abused violently. Parents do not have a right to harm you.

A.There can be realistic reasons for this, family violence for example.
B.Anyway, spend as much time with them as you can.
C.Tell them you love them every morning.
D.Forgiveness is the key.
E.Parents will turn express their love to you.
F.After this, share your feelings with your parents.
G.Please remember parents are as important as friends.

9 . To tell the truth, I don't remember seeing Mom actually read her old Bible. As far as I could tell, it just sat on the nightstand next to her bed. And that was the best place for it, since it probably wouldn't have survived any meaningful use anywhere else. The black cloth cover was ragged and time-worn, and its dog-eared pages yellowed. Once I accidentally knocked it off the nightstand, launching loose pages all over Mom's and Dad's bedroom. I expected a tongue-lashing for my carelessness, but Mom was so busy gathering the pages, gently smoothing them and returning them to their place in the book that she paid no attention to me.

Soon after I moved away from home, my sister Kathy and I bought a new Bible for Mom for her birthday. It was a black leather volume, twice as big as her old Bible. The pages were decorated in gold, and there were maps, references and a complete Bible dictionary included within its pages. We even had her name carved on the front with gold-leaf lettering. It was a beautiful book and Mom was touched and pleased. I remember watching her thumb carefully through the pages, admiring the quality of the paper and the clarity of the printing. From that day on, that Bible was the one she took with her to church and the one from which she read during the family Nativity Pageant. But for some reason, it never replaced the old Bible from its place for honor on her nightstand. And that bothered me a little.

“I don't know why you keep that old thing,” I told her as we prepared to pack it among her most precious belongings for what would turn out to be the last of many movements in her life-this time to warm Southern California. “That new Bible we got for you is the best that money can buy. You can't even use this old one anymore.”

Mom smiled at me weakly and sat on the edge of her bed, carefully rapping the old Bible in an equally old, equally shabby white cloth.

“Just because a thing isn't useful anymore, that doesn't mean it isn't valuable, “she said softly and deliberately.” You look at this and see an old, worn-out book. However, I see the gift your father gave me on our wedding day. I see the friend that was always there to provide me with strength and comfort when your father served at the front. I see the storybook from which I read stories to all of my children, and the book from which you all read your first Bible poems.”

“This Bible has been in the family as long as we've been a family."She continued, caressing it through the shabby white cloth.“Even though it isn't especially useful anymore, there is still value in what it represents. At least, there is to me.”

Suddenly it occured to me that she wasn't just talking about the old Bible. We live in an age of fanatically obsessive utilitarianism. Everything is disposable. If it's old or odd-looking or not particularly useful, we toss it out. We forget that there is value beyond use, and worth beyond “what's in it for me right now.”

When Mom passed away, Dad gave me her “new” Bible. It's among my most cherished possessions. It's the Bible I read and take to church. It means a lot to me, and it's really beautiful and incredibly useful. But I would trade it in a minute for Mom's old useless Bible. I even have the perfect place for it: on the nightstand next to my bed.

1. What does the underlined word “tongue-lashing” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Defense.B.Challenge.C.Criticism.D.Recognition.
2. According to the passage, what bothered the author a little?
A.Her mom didn't take the new Bible to church.
B.Her mom was unwilling to move to Southern California.
C.Her mom couldn't find an appropriate place for the new Bible.
D.Her mom had a strong love for the old Bible after owning the new one.
3. What does paragraph 6 mainly tell us?
A.The Bible is too old to use.
B.The Bible has been part of their family.
C.The author should have read all the stories in the Bible.
D.The author should have shown respect for the Bible.
4. According to the author, what is “utilitarianism”?

C.People nowadays are materially better off than ever before.
D.The importance of the necessities of life has been overstated.
5. What's the best title for the passage?
