3 . It’s eight o’ clock on Christmas morning, and Uncle Tom says he wants to listen to the news. I am wondering why on earth grownups would be interested in the news when there are important things to be done, such as handing out presents. And then, while I am only half-listening to the radio broadcast, something surprising happens: The boring newsreader begins talking about a Christmas message from the Vatican. Hadn’t we heard that report earlier? My older brother, Colin, figures out what’s happening. “Pete, Pete, it’s a tape recorder! We’ve got our tape recorder!”
Colin and I had both been blind from birth. At the special boarding school in Worcester in western England that Colin and I attended, a tape recorder of your own was the height of aspiration. However, Colin—better informed and more realistic about family finances than I was—had no real expectations of getting one. I realized, much later, that the tape recorder my father had bought us would have cost more than four times his weekly wage.
The new toy, the size of a small suitcase, dominated the rest of the Christmas holidays. I took my first steps down the path to my career as a broadcaster when I returned to school after the holidays. I would wander round the school with my microphone, recording my thoughts in the style of the voices I heard on the radio. But ten years later, after I had started and abandoned a university law course, I drew on the confidence and walked into a BBC radio station, in the hope of selling myself as a broadcast journalist. A producer at the radio station who was putting together a weekly program for blind people had seen me. He later phoned me and informed I was admitted.
Twenty-five years later, I presented my first report for BBC TV’s Six O’Clock News, a program my father had never missed. Although by then he’d been dead for more than a decade, I like to think he’d have realized that his inspiring Christmas present had changed my life.

Boys like to be considered to be popular with others. Martin was such a young and generous boy, who thought he had loads of good friends in school. He was always showing off to his family members that he had the maximum number of friends in school. Also, he claimed how friendly he was with everyone. His family members wanted him to recognize the reality, thus not being cheated in the future.
One day as he was talking triumphantly about his friends at home again, his father called him for a bet. Father said, “Martin, I bet you for the cycle you wanted.” Martin. “What’s the bet?” Father thought for a while and answered, “I bet you do not have as many friends as you think. Everyone is not your real friend. I’m sure many of them are nothing more than your classmates, in other words, they are just your fair-weather friends.” Martin, without a second thought, accepted the challenge.
However, he had no idea how to test whether his classmates were real friends or not, so he asked his father about the testing way. A bright smile spread across the face of his father, “Wait a minute. I have just exactly what you need. It is a special item in my collection. Let me go and bring it.” Martin waited curiously. Several minutes later, Martin’s father returned, walking towards him, looking like he was carrying something heavy. But Martin could not see anything.
His father explained, “You see, this is a magic chair. It is invisible, and it is rather difficult to sit on it. You take this to your school. If you manage to sit on it, the special chair will activate its magic. Then you will be able to tell who are your real friends.”
The next day, brave and determined, Martin took the magic invisible chair to school.

My ten-year-old self loved summertime. The best part of summer was the community pool. Everyone was there.
We didn’t have a care in the world. Our biggest concern was which one of us could hold her breath underwater the longest. We didn’t care what we looked like or who was cool. I never once thought about how I looked in a swimsuit or if my hair looked good. I was aware that I wasn’t super-thin like some of the other girls I saw, but I didn’t care.
And then one day, I was taking my turn on the diving board with all the other kids. I jumped in, floated freely to the top and swam over to the ladder to make my way out of the pool. I noticed a girl standing at the top of the ladder, so I swam slowly, giving her time to move. I didn’t know her. She looked cute and thin.
But instead of moving, a strange thing happened. This girl leaned over the pool and said to me, “They don’t allow beached (搁浅的) whales in this pool.”
Beached whales? I soon realized that I was the beached whale. Suddenly, my cool blue swimsuit didn’t cover enough. I got out of the pool quickly and wrapped my towel around my body, feeling like I was going to throw up. From that moment on, I was aware of my size.
Clothes became a horrible dream, and I struggled through my teen years and into adulthood. I cried over clothes that didn’t fit. My heart had always hated the little girl by the pool, who took the confidence out of my life until I got my daughter, Lisa.
One day I dressed my little girl in beautiful clothes and put a bow (蝴蝶结) on her head, but she refused because she liked to be comfortable. Is society interested in comfort? However, when I stared at her, I suddenly realized how beautiful she was, even though she was covered in mud.
