1 . There are few vows(誓言)more moving than a couple’s promise to love each other for better or worse and in sickness or in health.
Steve and Charlene are looking forward to celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. Sadly, the cancer diagnosis for Charlene has made it seem unlikely. “We will have been married for 25 years in September but with the doctors’ reports, we may not make it,” Steve feared.
Charlene’s sister realized that her sister might not have another chance to celebrate this momentous anniversary, so she came up with a plan for the couple. She and Steve quickly arranged for a ceremony on Valentine’s Day. It was held in Charlene’s favorite park, a special spot for her. Charlene had two special men-her sons, in her arms as she walked to her husband, wearing her original wedding dress. In the ceremony, Steve said, “I do,” and making the “in sickness or in health” vow for a second time was a touching moment. Charlene was all smiles and shared that she was deeply touched by the loving gesture.
Now that she has had a chance to celebrate her love story, Charlene will be attending her next—and possibly final—big event, her own celebration of life in early March. As her husband explained in a web post: “Charlene has been a dedicated community volunteer and advocate for animal rights. Instead of a funeral, we are going to do something. We will have a service that she can participate in, followed by a reception where friends and family can interact with her. We want to do this while Charlene is still strong enough to do her share for charitable causes.” It sounds like no matter what her health condition is, Charlene will be surrounded by her husband’s love on the journey.

2 . Johnny Agar had always dreamed of competing in triathlons (铁人三项赛) as an athlete. Unfortunately, he’d been diagnosed with cerebral palsy (大脑性瘫痪) shortly after he was born. This disorder makes it difficult for the now-28-year-old to get around. However, he and his father are proving that where there’s a will — and a lot of love — there’s a way!
Jeff Agar, 59, is helping Johnny experience life to the fullest by entering triathlons by his side. As a team, they’ve completed over 200 races, including a full ironman triathlon that required them to swim, bike and run 140 miles in just 17 hours.
“I’m not a fan of triathlon,” Jeff joked. “I’m doing it not because I love it. This is Johnny’s dream and I’m giving him the legs and the power to do it.” Although Jeff typically provides the majority of the manpower, it was important for Johnny to cross the finish line on his own legs. “Walking in races was my way of telling Dad, ‘Okay, I’m not just going to say thank-you anymore; I’m going to actually put words into action,’” Johnny said.
Johnny and his dad now form Team Agar, using their story and the power of motivational speaking to inspire others. “When we completed that 140-mile Ironman together, it had an amazing impact on many people who had seen our story. We began to see that competing isn’t just about us crossing the finish line; it’s about helping others leave uncertainty in the dust — even those facing greater obstacles than we did.”
Earlier this month, they received some incredible news. They were invited to compete in one of the toughest triathlons: the Ironman World Championship! What made the occasion even more special was a pre-recorded video message from Johnny’s idol, athlete Peyton Manning. “Rumor has it that you’re a big fan of mine,” Peyton said, “I’m a big fan of yours as well! You guys are incredible; you’re a true inspiration.”
1. What can we learn about Jeff from the text?A.He has a great passion for triathlons. |

The Best Worst Thanksgiving
It was Thanksgiving morning. This year the Li family was I raveling from their home in Virginia to Grandma and Grandpa Li’s house in Florida. Nine-year-old Zara Li had been excited about the trip. But she found out that their beloved dog, Tucker, had to stay at a doghouse. Tucker was her best friend in the entire world. On the way to Florida, she already missed it.
In the car seat next to her, Zara’s little sister, Piper, kicked her feet and sang the alphabet song. Suddenly, Piper reached over and grabbed the dog toy off Zara’s lap.
“Quit it, Piper!” Zara cried. She tried to pull it back, but Piper held on tight. All of a sudden, cloud of white stuffing flew in the air with a ripping sound. “You are such a baby!” she screamed, causing Piper to burst into tears.
“Zara,” Mom sighed, “Piper didn’t ruin Tucker’s toy on purpose. She’s only four years old. You’re the big sister, so be nice.”
Zara bit her lip and stared out of the window. She was always getting into trouble for not being nice enough to Piper. Her parents didn’t gel that Piper was wrong either. Sometimes Zara pretended that she didn’t have a sister at all. This was turning into the worst Thanksgiving ever.
The way to Grandma and Grandpa’s house was dark and stormy. Suddenly, Dad pulled the car over. “Uh-oh! It looks like we’re not going anywhere,” Mom announced, Zara saw a giant oak tree completely blocking the road.
“The wind must have knocked it down,” declared Dad.
“Grandma and Grandpa’s house is only two blocks away,” Mom replied. “We can walk the rest of the way. A little rain never hurt anyone.”
They all climbed out of the car. Wind and rain whipped Zara’s hair into her face. It was hard to keep her eyes open against the wind. “You’d better hold on to my hand, Piper,” Zara cautioned, but Piper didn’t respond. Zara looked behind her, but Piper wasn’t there. She wasn’t with Mom or Dad, either. “Mom! Dad! Where’s Piper?” Zara shouted in panic. “Piper! Piper!” everyone called. The wind seemed to blow their voices away. Then Zara heard a strange sound coming from the bushes nearby.

I’d been living in foster care (抚育院) since I was two. I was put in different foster homes. I felt lonely and confused.
Because I acted up, eventually my previous foster mom sent me back to the adoption agency, just as the mom before had. I thought I was the most unlovable girl in the world.
Then I met Kate. I was seven. When my foster mother told me that Kate was single and wanted to adopt a child, I didn’t think shed choose me. I couldn’t imagine anyone would want me to live with them forever. But, Kate asked me if I’d mind living with one parent instead of two.
“All I want is someone who loves me,” I said, feeling excited but afraid, too. I wondered if she’d change her mind once she got to know me. Kate sensed my fear. “I know you’ve been hurt,” she said, hugging me. “I know you’re scared. But I promise I’ll never send you away. We’re a family now.”
When I moved in with Mom Kate, I went to sleep that night feeling safe. I prayed I wouldn’t have to leave. Every day, she told me she loved me. But love wasn’t enough to heal the hurt inside me. I kept waiting for her to change her mind. I thought, “If I act badly enough, she’ll leave me like the others.”
So I tried to hurt her before she could hurt me. I picked fights over little things and threw tantrums (发脾气) when I didn’t get my way. I slammed the doors. If Mom tried to stop me, I’d hit her. But she never lost patience. She’d hug me and say she loved me anyway.
Mom was very strict about my homework, because I was failing in school when I came to live with her. One day, I kept watching TV before finishing my homework.

10 . During her childhood summer holidays, McIntosh, her mother and little brother would make the short trip from Glasgow to Loch Lomond to rent a boat, pack it with camping supplies and head for the islands. The trips became a tradition.
However, her mother became unwell. Any thought of summer camping trips faded away, as McIntosh, aged 13, became one of the young carers across Britain with round-the-clock responsibility for her parent’s welfare. The young girl’s world became about helping her mother. At 18, she found herself anxious and unsure of what to do next. It was at that point that she was encouraged to apply for a 19-dayresidential course with Outward Bound, which prides itself on uprooting youngsters from their home comforts, giving funded places to those like McIntosh from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Four years on and McIntosh credits the course with making her who she is today. It was so transformative that she is training to become an outdoor instructor herself. “I learnt more about myself in those 19 days than I had in my entire life.”
“When you’re in the middle of nowhere, you feel quite vulnerable. You learn to bond and trust quite quickly,” she recalls. Then came the moment described as one of the best of her life. The group had been asked to climb Ben Nevis but when they were close to the summit, they realized they had not left enough time and had to turn back. The next day they returned and completed it.
“Climbing Ben Nevis twice in two days, that’s not something I ever would have thought I was capable of doing at the start of the course,” she said, still beaming about it years later.
To become an instructor, McIntosh is gaining qualifications in climbing, skiing, and mountain leadership, as well as studying for a diploma in counseling. She wants to take her mother, who is losing her eyesight, camping again. “I hope that before that happens I will be able to take her out and show her the things that I get to see,” she said.
