Earthquake -proof (抗震的) buildings

There are a number of ways     1     buildings can be made strong enough to stand up to earthquakes. The simplest way is to make them much     2     (strong). A building strong enough not     3     (destroy) by a large earthquake, however, would probably look more like a bunker (地堡) than a nice place to live     4

So engineers have looked for other ways. One is to make the building that can swing (摇摆) from side to side.     5     is to design it so that it doesn't sit directly on the ground but on something that allows it to move a bit with the earthquake. If only a small part of a building     6     (fall) down in an earthquake, damage can be     7     (great) reduced, so buildings are often designed to do this as well.

However,     8     (make) new earthquake -proof buildings is expensive, but with the     9     (develop) of science and technology more efforts will be made to solve     10     problem in the future.

3 . Child Friendly To

A program Child Friendly To is working to transform Toronto into a place where all children can learn, play and grow in the healthiest way. We are building a culture that applies a child-friendly view to city planning and decision-making by increasing the role and voice of children in city management and increasing the rights of children across Toronto. We believe that:

★Children are important residents with unique ideas and experiences that have the power to change how we make plans and decisions.

★Children are experts in child-friendliness. Listening to children's ideas creates opportunity and improves equality. Building a city that is friendly to children requires an understanding of what living in the city is like -or a child.

★Engaging with children is our responsibility and duty. Local government has a responsibility to listen to children, as with all residents, when making plans and decisions.

November 20th is National Child Day in Canada. The day celebrates the importance of children as active participants in their own lives and communities, who can and should have opportunities for meaningful contributions to decision-making.

To celebrate National Child Day 2020, an event was held at City Hall with local students and city leaders. Children in grades four and five in Toronto were invited to share their ideas about creating a child-friendly city. We asked them:

★What would a child-friendly Toronto look, feel and sound like?

★B you had one wish to make Toronto more child-friendly, what would it be?

Children from nine schools across Toronto submitted hundreds of responses, from written texts, to drawings, photographs and maps. They described the people, places and things that need to be involved and considered to create a child-friendly city.

1. What is the purpose of Child Friendly To?
A.To find ways to improve children's health.
B.To help children make their own decisions.
C.To change Toronto into a child-friendly city.
D.To tell children how to be more friendly.
2. Why should we listen to children's ideas?

B.They have more friends than adults do.
C.They always have better plans and decisions.
D.They know better what a child-friendly city is like.
3. Who took part in the celebration of National Child Day 2020?

5 . Nice Feeling is a very excellent small restaurant. It offers great Chinese food and considerate servings, like delicious crab Rangoon and shrimp toast. The triple delight and kung-pao shrimp are also luscious.

The couple who work in the kitchen speak very broken English. It's pretty difficult to let them know what I need. However, it isn't really a problem for the coming people. After all, they are so friendly to every customer and patient with any situations. They set up this restaurant three years ago and I have already been very familiar with them.

This is a takeout restaurant unless you like sitting at one of the 2 tables in the cold lobby(大厅)area in cold winter days. There is no air conditioner in the summer either. The entire kitchen area can be seen from the counter(柜台)and it looks very clean although somewhat small and narrow(狭窄的). I've gotten takeout here at least 40 times and never had any problems with the food.

On a couple of occasions, they forgot to start my order before I got there. The man thought I was unhappy and gave me an extra appetizer (小吃)as a gift. How sweet he was! Actually, I was not angry at all. Delicious food is worth the wait!

It is a nice place to order your takeout since things there are so cheap and tasty. It is also a popular place for people to feed themselves up in the town. I suggest you call them about 15-20 minutes before you arrive in case you have to wait in that lobby for a long time.

1. What does the underlined word “luscious” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Cheap.
B.Rare.
C.Delicious.
D.Fresh.
2. The author found it difficult to________.
A.be patient with any situations
B.teach the couple to speak English
C.stay in a place without an air conditioner
D.communicate with the couple in English
3. What can we infer from the third paragraph?
A.You can only order takeout in Nice Feeling.
B.The lobby of Nice Feeling is always crowded.
C.Nice Feeling stays clean and quiet all the year round.
D.Nice Feeling is clean in its conditions but small in size.
4. Why does the author write this text?
A.To show us how to talk with the couple.
B.To tell us his love of Nice Feeling.
C.To ask for advice for Nice Feeling.
D.To offer some tips to diners.

It doesn’t impress like George Washington’s plantation on the Potomac, but Lincoln’s home in downtown Springfield, Illinois,     1     (prove)irresistible to visitors since it opened to the public. Beautifully restored(修复)to its 1860 appearance, the house was Abraham and Mary Lincoln’s home for 17 years. In 1844 they bought it     2     $1,200 and some land from Charles Dresser, who performed their     3     (marry)ceremony in 1842.

When the house was built, it was much     4     (small)than it is today. Mary’s niece wrote, “The little home     5     (paint)white.” It was sweet and fresh. Mary loved it. She was extremely pretty, and her house was a reflection of     6     (she), everything in good taste and in perfect order.

Although Mary loved flowers,     7     she nor her husband was known as a gardener. A long- time neighbor said they never planted trees and only kept a garden for one year. Mary’s sister, Frances Todd Wallace, often came over     8     (plant)flowers in the front yard.

9     Lincolns enlarged the house to a full two-story in 1856 to meet the needs of their growing family. Three of the four Lincoln sons were born here. After Lincoln was elected President of the US in 1861, they rented the house and     10     (sell)most of their furniture.

文章大意:这是一篇应用文。文章主要介绍了世界上最大的体育场。目前这些体育场仍在运行并且还在承办大型体育赛事。

8 . The Biggest Stadiums in the World

People have been pouring into stadiums since the days of ancient Greece. In around 80 A.D., the Romans built the Colosseum, which remains the world’s best known stadium and continues to inform contemporary design. Rome’s Colosseum was 157 feet tall and had 80 entrances, seating 50,000 people. However, that was small fry compared with the city’s Circus Maximus, which accommodated around 250,000 people.

These days, safety regulations-not to mention the modern sports fan’s desire for a good view and comfortable seat — tend to keep stadium capacities (容量) slightly lower. Even soccer fans tend to have a seat each; gone are the days of thousands standing to watch the match.

For the biggest stadiums in the world, we have used data supplied by the World Atlas list so far, which ranks them by their stated permanent capacity, as well as updated information from official stadium websites.

All these stadiums are still functional, still open and still hosting the biggest events in world sport.

·Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, Pyongyang D.P.R. Korea. Capacity: 150,000. Opened: May 1,1989.

·Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, Michigan, U. S. Capacity: 107,601. Opened: October 1, 1927.

·Beaver Stadium, State College, Pennsylvania, U. S. Capacity: 106,572. Opened: September 17, 1960.

·Ohio Stadium, Columbus, Ohio, U. S. Capacity: 104,944. Opened: October 7,1922.

·Kyle Field, College Station, Texas, U. S. Capacity: 102,512. Opened: September 24, 1927.

1. How many people could the Circus Maximus hold?
A.104,944.B.107,601.C.About 150,000.D.About 250,000.
2. Of the following stadiums, which is the oldest?

10 . Four homes built using everyday objects

Can newspapers and bottles be used as building materials? After touring these four homes built using these objects, you might just believe the answer is yes.

Plastic Bottle Village, Bocas del Toro

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Truer words could not describe Robert Bezeau’s project which began in 2012. After collecting tens of thousands of bottles, Bezeau recruited a team of locals to construct a building using the unwanted materials.

The Bottle Houses, Cape Egmon, Prince Edward Island

The Bottle Houses on Prince Edward Island, Canada, are the creation of Edouard T. Arsenault and his daughter Rejeanne. The father and daughter began construction in 1980. Over the months, they collected empty bottles, and by 1981 they opened the house to the public. Since then, the building has remained open to visitors, with sunny days being the best time to visit.

Earthship Biotecture, Taos, New Mexico

Michael Reynolds built his first Earthship when he was 23 years old. Starting out with nothing more than empty bottles, Reynolds set out to create a home that was not only sustainable, but also easy enough for someone without a construction background to build. Earthship Biotecture offers nightly stays. Self-guided tours are also available.

The Paper House, Rockport, Massachusetts

When Elis F. Stenman built his summer home in 1922, he turned to paper for materials. The design has proven to be quite durable, as it’s still standing nearly 100 years later. The home has been open to visitors since the 1930s, and only began charging 10 cents per person in 1942 when it became a museum. Today visitors can experience the Paper House for themselves for $2 for adults and $1 for children.
