文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍的是一项新研究发现,虽然无聊确实令人厌倦,但也不全是坏事,这种让人不喜欢的精神状态实际上可以激发宝贵的创造力。

2 . Being bored is no fun, especially at work. But new research out of the Research School of Management at Australian National University argues that while boredom is certainly boring, it isn’t all bad. The disliked mental state can actually spark precious creativity.

The study asked 52 subjects to do a pretty boring job: sort apart a bowl of red and green beans with just one hand for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, 49 other subjects — the control group — were instructed to create art projects with paper, beans and glue. Once the 30 minutes was over, each group was instructed to spend five minutes on a creative task: they had to come up with reasons why a hypothetical (假定的) person was two hours late for a meeting.

The bored group came up with not just more ideas than the control group, but more creative ideas than the control group, too. The quality and quantity of production was higher for people who were bored than those who were not. Creativity itself was measured under a standard that balanced novelty and practicality. Ideas had to fit both criteria to be considered creative.

Guiyun Park, the study’s lead author, readily admits that not every type of job permits the fun of boredom, and it can really be harmful to some important work. But for designers and anyone in a creative field, boredom is not something to fear, but to embrace. Sometimes, the best way to be productive is to expect nothing of yourself at all.

1. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The process of the research.B.The benefits of the research.
C.The reasons for the research.D.The disadvantage of the research.
2. Which of the following may Guiyun Park disagree with?
A.Boredom can do harm to some work.
B.All types of jobs can embrace boredom.
C.Boredom is not always something to fear.
D.Boredom can be favourable to art designers.
3. What is the author’s attitude to boredom?
A.Concerned.B.Negative.C.Positive.D.Indifferent.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?
A.The Role of Boredom in Increasing Productivity
B.The Negative Impact of Boredom on the Workplace
C.Why Boredom Should Be Avoided in Creative Fields
D.Unlocking Creativity: The Unexpected Benefit of Boredom

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文,续写词数应为150字左右。

My father never told me he loved me when I was a child. I always saw him as being a serious man who rarely had a smile. But my mom told me “I love you” everyday. So I really never thought about not hearing it from my dad. I never really thought about it much until I faced the reality of death.

On November 9th, 1990, I received word that my National Guard unit was going to the war zone. I had been in the Guard for 10 years and never dreamed that we would be activated for a war, even though I knew it was what we trained for. I went to my father and gave him the news. I could sense he was worried about me going but he said nothing, and eight days later I was gone.

On November 17th,1990, our military vehicles rolled out of rural Greenville, Michigan. The streets were filled with families and well-wishers to see us off. As we were close to the edge of town, I looked out the window of my truck and saw my wife, my children, and Mom and Dad. They were all waving and crying, except for my father. He just stood there, almost like a stone statue. He looked pretty old at that moment. I don’t know why, he just did.

I was gone for that Thanksgiving and missed our family’s dinner. A few days after Thanksgiving I was able to call my wife, and she told me something that has made me look at my father in a different way ever since. She told me that my father recited his usual Thanksgiving prayer. But this time he added one last sentence. As a tear ran down his cheek, he said, “Dear Lord, please watch over and guide my son, Rick, with your hand in his time of need as he serves his country, and bring him home to us safely.” At that point he burst into tears. I had never seen my father cry, and when I heard this, I guessed my father really did love me.

Eight months later, I returned home from the war.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要解释了什么是感恩以及感恩的积极作用。

5 . Gratitude, which is a positive emotional state, can have a profound impact on our mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

Gratitude offers us a way of embracing (拥抱) all that makes our lives what they are.     1     It includes the willingness to expand our attention so that we perceive more of the goodness we are always receiving.

Robert Emmons is one of the world’s leading experts on the science of gratitude.     2     The first is an affirmation of goodness: People can learn to wake up to the good around them and notice the gifts they have received. The second part of gratitude is recognizing that the source of this goodness rests outside of oneself — we receive these gifts from other people, and sometimes from fate, or the natural world.     3

In one study involving nearly 300 adults seeking counseling services at a university, one group wrote a gratitude letter each week for three weeks. The gratitude group reported significantly better mental health (compared to the control group), 12 weeks after the last writing exercise.     4     A study of this practice found that people who wrote down three things that had gone well in their day and identified the causes of those good things were significantly happier and less depressed.

5     When you practice gratitude, you shift your thoughts away from negative emotions and uncomfortable sensations. Instead, you begin to focus on good things that you may have overlooked. Rather than focusing on the misfortune of having a flat tire, for example, you consider how your job has made it possible to pay for repairs. Or you shift your focus to how fortunate you are to have close friends who are willing to drive you home.

A.He defines gratitude as having two parts.
B.A little gratitude can do wonders for your mood.
C.Gratitude isn’t just a happy feeling for our present lives.
D.However, many people don’t realize the power of gratitude.
E.Another type of written gratitude practice is counting blessings.
F.Gratitude doesn’t necessarily mean showing appreciation for the things that are around you.
G.In other words, gratitude helps realize they wouldn’t be where they are without the help of others.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要解释了分享和快乐之间的关系。

8 . Sharing is regarded as both a social morality and a personal virtue. It is a wonderful thing that increases pleasure and reduces sorrow. Then why do we tend to be happier when sharing with others?     1

Sharing is Fundamental to Human Relationships

We have shared with others since the beginning of civilization and interaction. It is one of the primary ways we learn to communicate.    2     People from these cultures open up their homes to traveling visitors and those curious about learning their cultural practices. However, sharing doesn’t always need to be this grand gesture. Simple acts like exchanging compliments can also brighten up a person’s day and make them feel more positive.

Sharing Releases Oxytocin(催产素), the Wellness Hormone (激素)

3     Oxytocin helps build trust, relieve stress and anxiety, improve immune (免疫的) function and benefit your overall wellbeing as a result. When people are in possession of generous levels of Oxytocin in their bodies, they are more empathetic (有同感的) towards others and feel more generous than they would in normal circumstances. You can gain Oxytocin even by making online donations. You need not have to physically share in person to experience the benefits of the hormone.

    4

When you share your belongings with others, you are expressing trust in their ability to keep your possession safe and out of harm’s way. If your trust pays off in them, you experience a sense of happiness. We tend to be more emotionally satisfied and happy when we are able to build trust in our relationships. Trust and happiness are closely related experience.

Sharing Helps Build You a Social Network

Humans are social animals.    5     If we happen to have encouraging and supportive friends and family to rely on, we are less prone (倾向于) to anxiety and depression. However, if we tend to lack a reliable social support system in our lives, our happiness can suffer. Sharing helps build new relationships. Social interactions advance your health, wealth and general wellbeing.
