4 . Walter Benjamin, the German philosopher, once noted that boredom was the “dream bird that hatches the egg of experience”. However, the creative flights of fancy which often arise from having little to do are being killed off by social media, researchers argued. Viewing mindlessly through attention-grabbing posts and videos prevents “profound (深层的) boredom” that can drive people on to new passions or skills. Instead, people find themselves in a state of “superficial boredom”, which does not motivate creative thought.

Dr Timothy Hill, leader of the research team at the University of Bath, said, “The problem we observed was that social media can ease superficial boredom. But that also consumes time and energy, and may prevent people progressing to a state of profound boredom, where they might discover new passions. Profound boredom may sound like a negative concept but, in fact, it can be intensely positive if people are given the chance for undisturbed thinking and development.

Researchers interviewed 15 people during the pandemic (流行病), when boredom was more likely because of restrictions. Many described being trapped in regularly daily walks and watching television, with many turning to social media to pass the time. But although the participants said that social media provided a temporary escape from superficial boredom, it also appeared to exacerbate it, leaving them feeling they had wasted their time.

The pandemic was a painful and consuming experience for thousands of less fortunate people. But there are stories of those in lockdown who found new hobbies, careers or directions in life. Switching off devices could help people reach the state of boredom which pushes them on to new hobbies or achievements.

This research has given us a window to understand how the “always-on”, 24/7 culture and devices that promise an abundance of information and entertainment may be fixing our superficial boredom but are actually preventing us from finding more meaningful things.

1. Why are Walter Benjamin’s words mentioned?
A.To call for attention to the research on boredom.
B.To comment on the strategies to face loneliness.

D.To clarify the problem caused by social media.
2. Which of the following may Dr Timothy Hill agree?
A.Profound boredom is of value.
B.Social media can fuel passions.
C.The research has some limitations.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要介绍了研究表明,过去的逆境可以在三个方面帮助你变得更强大。

5 . How adversity(逆境) makes you stronger

When faced with a crisis, we find it difficult to imagine the experience will eventually lead to some type of growth.     1     Research shows that past adversities can help you become more powerful in three ways.

2     Post-unpleasant growth is the experience of positive change after going through a significantly stressful event. Researchers have discovered two common themes that people tend to report after experiencing a stressful event: spiritual growth and enhanced personal strength.

They build self-efficacy. Self-efficacy is the confidence in your ability to overcome challenges and succeed. I once took part in a program with soldiers, where I should dance in front of hundreds of audience. When I danced, I had a panic attack and had to hang onto my colleague’s arm to make it through. What was odd was my brain’s reaction to the exercise. While it was a truly unpleasant experience, I survived.     3

They help you treat stress as a challenge.     4     Some people view stress as a threat, while others are able to view it as a challenge. With a challenge response? you get additional energy and feel focused instead of being fearful.

5     Your past struggles, even small ones during an adversity can help you step out of the trouble you’re faced with.

A.They help you find the good.
B.They can bring growth after sufferings.
C.People have a healthier physical response to stress.
D.If your world feels out of control right now, just stay relaxed.
E.The fact is that we can become stronger after a difficult situation.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章通过讲述后悔是会给人们带来心理上和身体上的消极影响的,进而提出了化解或消除后悔的策略。

6 . Regret is a very real reaction to a disappointing event in your life, a choice you made that can’t be changed, something you said that you can’t take back.     1     Regret can increase our stress, negatively affect physical health and disturb the balance of our immune systems.

2     One is what researchers refer to as the action path and the other is the inaction path. That is, we can regret the things we did or we can regret the things we did not do. Research suggests that action-related regret, although painful, encourages people to learn from their mistakes and move on.     3     This kind of regret is more likely to lead to depression and anxiety.

As with other negative emotions, it doesn’t work to avoid, deny or try to destroy regret.     4     Rather than stay put, people can manage these emotions in four steps: First, accept the fact that you are feeling them; determine why you are feeling them; allow yourself to learn from them: and, finally, release them and move forward.

You can help release these feelings of regret by practicing self-compassion (自我同情).This means reminding yourself that you are human, you are doing the best you can and you can learn from past decisions and grow.     5

Noticing, acknowledging and then forgiving your thoughts are a powerful step towards overcoming regret.

A.Dealing with regret is even more difficult.
B.Regret is not only unpleasant, but also unhealthy.
C.There are basically two ways to experience regret.
D.But regret related to the inaction path is harder to fix.
