1 . Developing friendship with other people is essential in our lives due to our own very nature.
Here are 4 key points to develop and sustain a true friendship.
Take responsibility of your own emotions.
The primary goal of friendship is to love, because this is our most inherent need. But love has no other object than love. Therefore, the value of our friendship with others is not because of the usefulness of the relationship. Our love for a person should not depend on their capacity to improve the conditions of our life. On the contrary, feeling the joy of having a true friendship is what we need.
Seek the good of the other person.
When we love another person, we seek the good of the other because we rejoice in their own happiness. Therefore, our seeking for the other person’s good is totally disinterested.
Acts of love are made for its own sake.
Embrace the differences.
Friendship doesn’t mean having the same interests, opinions and mindset as the other person.
Friendship is therefore a practice of unconditional love, an opportunity to grow together towards fulfillment, and a journey to unfold the most precious capacities of a human being.
A.Human beings are relational beings. |
B.Why not cherish it with your own heart? |
C.Look at the other as an end not as a means. |
D.Recognize the necessity of the close relationship. |
E.We usually blame the other person for what we feel. |
F.The mode of friendship differs from person to person. |
G.We serve the other without expecting anything in return. |
2 . At times, talking to kids can feel like learning a foreign language. Unfortunately, there’s no handy phrasebook or translation app that can make you sound friendly, encouraging, and firm all at the same time. Don’t worry.
Sit or kneel at their level
Lowering yourself makes you a lot more approachable. Even if you’re keeping things light and friendly, a child might feel threatened if you’re towering over them. Instead, grab a seat or take a knee near the child, so they don’t have to look up at you.
Kids love talking about their interests and preferences. As far as conversations go, asking about favorites is a pretty safe go-to topic. You might ask about their favorite singer, or what TV shows they like to watch.

A.Develop common interests. |
B.Chat about relatable topics. |
C.Children love to solve “adult” problems. |
D.This can help take the edge off your conversation. |

4 . Learning to Give Praise to Others
Words of praise, when used right, can have powerful positive effects on others. They are free, but they’re worth so much to the receiving person.
Of course, with all that I have mentioned above, be sure that it’s coming from your heart.
Besides, praising in public is rather important.
I believe that as you begin using these communication tips and praising people around you, you’ll see a change in the atmosphere of your work environment.
A.So you need to be sincere in praise. |
B.This is more so in voluntary organizations. |
C.People will become happier and smile more. |
D.It is much more effective than praise in private. |
E.Remember that measured praise is no praise at all. |
F.Words aren’t always necessary when praising others. |
G.The best way to teach kids how to praise others is by being an example. |

8 . A study by a team of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) psychologists has found a link between extraverts (外向的人) and their word choices. The finding highlights the need for stronger linguistic indicators to be developed for use in online personality prediction tools, which are being rapidly adopted by companies to improve digital marketing strategies.
Today, marketing companies use predictive algorithms (算法) to help them forecast what consumers want based on their online behaviors. For example, an extravert consumer might be attracted to marketing messages that match their personality, and retail brands could then choose to target such consumers by using more extraverted and creative language to advertise their products. However, personality prediction tools available today that are used by marketing firms are not entirely accurate due to a lack of theoretically sound designs. This may lead to a weakness affecting the performance of the machine learning algorithms. This begs the question—how should we create robust and accurate personality predictions?
The study found a correlation between extraverts and their tendency to use certain categories of words. The results showed a small strength of relationship between extraversion and the use of “positive emotion words” and “social process words.”
Positive emotion words are defined as words that describe a pleasant emotional state, such as “love”, ”happy”, or “blessed”, or that indicate positivity or optimism, such as “beautiful” or “nice”. Social process words include words containing personal pronouns except “I”, and words showing social intentions, such as “meet”, “share” and “talk”.
Moving forward, the NTU research team will investigate the relationship between extraversion and other word categories. They hope their work will provide clarity on the types of words that can help guide the development of more accurate machine learning tools for personality prediction.

9 . We are naturally drawn to friends and colleagues with familiar voices, scientists have found. People prefer those who have a similar accent, intonation and tone of voice to themselves, they discovered.
Previous research has focused on how a male or female voice sounds. Men with deeper voices and women with slightly higher voices were thought to sound more attractive.
But the new study, published by a linguist in Canada, suggests there is a more complex mechanism(机制)at play. Dr. Molly Babel, from the University of British Columbia in Canada, said, “The voice is an amazingly flexible tool that we use to construct our identity. Very few things in our voices are changeless, so we felt that our preference had to be about more than a person’ s shape and size.”
She recorded 30 volunteers, voices and asked each to rate the others attractiveness on a scale of one to nine. Each participant was from Western America, with similar accents. The people we assessed were all in the same dialect group, but they showed different degrees.
“We seem to like people whose voices are like our voices, and we like people who fit within what we know,” Dr. Babel said. She also found that breathy voices in women — typified by the famous American actress Marilyn Monroe — were seen as more attractive.
The breathy tone, caused by younger and thinner vocal cords(声带), implied youthfulness and health. A creaky voice, suggesting a person has a cold or is tired, was seen as unattractive. The participant preferred men who spoke with a shorter average word length and deeper voices.
1. The main purpose of the passage is to ________.A.compare male voices with female voices |
