文章大意:这是一篇议论文。如今人们会花费大量时间在网络社交上,文章对网络社交的优缺点进行了讨论。

1 . Thirteen-year-old Kaylee has a lot of friends — 532, actually, if you count up her online friends. And she spends a lot of time with them.

But is it possible that Kaylee’s online friendships could be making her lonely? That’s what some experts believe. Connecting online is a great way to stay in touch, they say. However, some experts worry that many kids are so busy connecting online that they might be missing out on true friendships.

Could this be true? During your parents’ childhoods, connecting with friends usually meant spending time with them in the flesh. Kids played Scrabble around a table, not Words with Friends on their phones. When friends missed each other, they picked up the telephone. Friends might even write letters to each other.

Today, most communication takes place online. A typical teen sends 2,000 texts a month and spends more than 44 hours per week in front of a screen. Much of this time is spent on social media platforms (平台).

In fact, in many ways, online communication can make friendships stronger. “There’s definitely a positive influence. Kids can stay in constant contact, which means they can share more of their feelings with each other,” says Katie Davis, co-author of The App Generation.

Other experts, however, warn that too much online communication can get in the way of forming deep friendships. “If we are constantly checking in with our virtual (虚拟的) worlds, we will have little time for our real-world friendships,” says Larry Rosen, a professor at California State University. Rosen also worries that today’s kids might mistake the “friends” on the social media for true friends in life. However, in tough times, you don’t need someone to like your picture or share your blogs. You need someone who will keep your secrets and hold your hand. You would like to talk face to face.

1. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To summarize the text.B.To tell about true friends.
C.To bring up a discussion.D.To encourage online friendship.
2. What does the underlined part “in the flesh” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.In any case.B.In person.C.In this way.D.In advance.
3. What is Katie`s attitude towards online communication?
A.Worried.B.Unconcerned.C.Confused.D.Positive.
4. What view does Rosen hold?
A.It`s wise to turn to friends online.
B.It`s easier to develop friendships in reality.
C.Teenagers need to focus on real-world friendships.
D.Social media help people stay closely connected.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。我们的眼睛会“说话”,要根据不同的关系和情况进行适当的眼神交流。

2 . Eyes can speak

Much meaning can be conveyed, clearly, with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak.     1    In a bus you may look at a stranger, but not for too long. And if he senses that you are staring at him, he may feel uncomfortable.

The same is true in our daily life. If you are stared at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down to see if there is anything wrong with you.     2    Eyes do speak, right?

Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive.     3    If a man stares at a woman for more than 10 seconds and refuses to look away from her, his intentions are obvious. He wishes to attract her attention and let her know that he is admiring her.

However, when two people are engaged in a conversation, the speaker will only look into the listener’s eyes from time to time to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what the former is speaking.     4    If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking as if trying to control you, you will feel awkward. A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking too long at the victim. He wrongly believes that looking straight in the eye is a sign of honest communication.     5

Actually, eye contact should be made based on specific relationships and situations.

A.That’s what normal eye contact is all about.
B.But things are different when it comes to staring at the opposite sex
C.Therefore, continuous eye contact is limited to lovers only.
D.On the contrary, it will give him away.
E.After all, nobody likes to be stared at for quite a long time.
F.Do you have such kind of experience?
G.If nothing goes wrong, you will feel annoyed at being stared at that way.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章论述了中国人和美国人对待友谊的不同观点和方式。

3 . America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real , yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending(延伸)sometimes deeply into both families.

Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, and share their holidays and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality(好客)easily.

Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday life, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides for our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at home, but truly can not manage a great deal of time to do with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.

For the Americans, it is often considered friendlier to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!

1. The writer of this passage must be________.
A.an AmericanB.a ChineseC.a professorD.a student
2. What does the underlined phrase “ generous with our time ” in Paragraph 3 probably mean ?
A.Willing to spend time.B.Serious about time.
C.Careful with time.D.Strict with time.
3. When we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will be________.
A.warmly welcomed at the airportB.offered a ride to his home
C.treated kindly at his homeD.treated to dinner in a restaurant
4. What is the best title for this passage ?
A.Friendships between Chinese
B.Friendships between Americans
C.Americans’ hospitality
D.Americans’ and Chinese people’s different views on friendship

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。介绍了和陌生人建立友谊的四种方法。

4 . How can you build trust when meeting strangers?

Say hello.

The quickest and surest way to befriend someone you don’t know is to simply say hello.

Approach a stranger that has caught your attention and say something along the lines of, “Hey how’s the day going so far? ”    1    It will likely work best in an environment where social interaction is commonly expected.

    2

People approach one another because they assume that there will be a particular outcome.

The fact is our assumptions about someone affects how you interact with them. You’re more likely to build up friendship if you spend more time listening to someone than waiting for them to fulfill your assumptions about them.    3    Doing so will help you get an accurate perspective on who they are quickly.

Keep a positive attitude.

If you run into someone that does not warmly receive a friendly “Hello,” don’t let this ruin your day. Remind yourself that most people are excited when someone breaks the ice.

When someone turns a cold shoulder to your attempts to start a conversation, note that whatever reason they have for doing so has nothing to do with you. They may have just missed Their chance.     4

Talk to strangers daily.

Plenty of people are shy, if not fearful, of introducing themselves to strangers.     5    While it may feel awkward, fight through your block and make a point of introducing yourself to someone you don’t know every day.

A.Be ready to listen.
B.Find common ground .
C.Reach out to someone else instead.
D.Think about what you know about this person.
E.This alone can get a friendly conversation going.
F.The best way to get over this shyness is to ignore it.
G.Focus on listening closely to people you’ve just met.

2     You are a kind soul at heart. You don’t want to turn the person away and you want to help when possible, even if it may eat into your time.

5     Perhaps you are worried saying “no” means closing doors. For example, one of my friends’ wives was asked to work in another department in her company. Since she liked her team, she didn’t want to go. However, she didn’t want to say “no” as she felt it would affect her promotion chances in the future.

A.Wanting to help others.

C.Wanting to keep a good relationship.
D.I slowly realized I needed to learn to say “no”.
E.You are afraid the person might be angry if you refuse him/her.
F.It means not making others look bad or lose face.
G.To learn to say “no”, we have to first understand what’s stopping us from it.

10 . If someone kindly introduces you to someone in their network or connects you with someone they think you should know by email, here are the steps to politely and effectively send your email response.

Respond immediately

Since you are the one being introduced by a colleague, probably because you requested an introduction, then you will be the one to respond first and as soon as possible.     1     You are letting the sender know you appreciate the introduction, and that you want to set up a meeting with the person you've been introduced to.

    2

If you haven't already researched the person you are being introduced to, now is the time to do it.It's also good to see if they've posted any updates on social media that may provide insight (洞察力)into what projects they are working on or what they are talking about on social media.     3

Say thanks for the introduction

Definitely show your gratitude to the person for their introduction.     4     The proper manner is to put the sender's name in the blind carbon copy (bcc) and reply all with your message. Putting their name in the bcc line ensures they receive your response but not future messages from the other person.

Pay attention to your request

When gathering information from the person you' ve been introduced to, be very clear about the information you are looking for. Don't say you are looking to“pick their brain" or“learn about their career path."     5     Instead, specifically state one or two questions you would like the person to answer during your brief meeting with them, not through email.

A.Research before you respond
B.So you can refer to that in your reply
C.Send your response timely with two goals
D.There are many ways to ask your questions
E.These are too broad and may scare the person off
F.It's polite to express appreciation to senders in person
G.It's a big deal to take the time to make an introduction for you
