It was 40 years ago. One day, Emma came back to their apartment from work and realized that her husband, David, was extremely ill. He was throwing up and slurring (发音不清) his words. Emma was on the edge of a breakdown. After three failed attempts to get help, she had reached her limit. She started to shout in the lobby (大厅). That’s when her unsung hero appeared.
That person was a young man with dark hair and a white physician’s coat. He came to Emma and said, “How can I help you? What’s going on here?” Emma explained what was happening to David, and that she was afraid it was serious.

After I sat myself down on the patient chair, she asked me why I had come in. Then, she placed three fingers on my wrist and silently felt my pulse. I was then taken to a room and told to lie down. Soon, she took out the needles which made me quite worried because such objects make me uneasy.
The initial procedure of receiving acupuncture proved to be quite surprising. To address my migraines, acupuncture was first administered to the back of my hand, which is nowhere near my head. The feeling was quite unexpected too: as the doctor carefully tapped and twisted the needle in, I did not sense the needle itself, but rather an effect that rippled (起伏) throughout my entire body. The doctor then continued to tap and twist more needles throughout my entire body: head, face, stomach, legs, arms, and toes. The entire process was over in 20 minutes. At the same time, he showed his talent for creative writing and wrote his first essay about a brave man. His thinking ability and imagination made leaps. Todd, 59, and Donna, 58, woke up early on October 2 to go for a bike ride and take pictures of the sunrise. While walking barefoot along the shoreline and enjoying the sights, Todd suddenly fell down.
Donna thought her husband was joking. But she quickly realized this was no laughing matter. Todd’s heart stopped beating and he turned blue. “I called his name and cried for help:’Help! Please help Todd’, ”Donna said later.
Tyler Volpe, a surfer, was in the water when Todd fell down. Volpe is also a physician assistant. He heard Donna’s cries for help. “I knew it wasn’t normal, ”he said. “I came flying out of the water. ”
Paul Roy, 24, a health care worker at a local hospital, was also surfing that morning. Volpe started chest compressions (按压) while Roy breathed into Todd’s mouth. Then, they switched positions, A woman on the beach put her arm around Donna and prayed with her. “I really thought he was dead, ”Donna said.
As Roy and Volpe continued CPR, Todd breathed a few times. The sea water was starting to come in. Other surfers used their boards to form a wall between the rescue effort and the water.
“They kept him alive until the ambulance got there, ”Donna said. “It could have been two minutes; it could have been 10 days. I was watching my life end with his. ”

Seeing Todd was out of danger, Roy and Volpe quietly left. They continued surfing.
