1 . Even if vaccination (接种疫苗) is a powerful defense against disease, some voices are against it. In a recent letter, the American Medical Association (AMA) urged big social media including Amazon, Facebook and Google to take action to defend medical science on their platforms.

It said that vaccine -preventable diseases that do harm to the public health like measles (麻疹) are on the rise. Measles cases worldwide jumped more than 30% in 2017 compared to 2016, with the largest increases seen among nations in the Americas, Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. Vaccine-preventable diseases are increasing largely because many people are unwilling to get vaccinated. And some of these people even encourage others to refuse vaccination. So this year, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the anti-vaccination movement a top 10-health threat.

“Vaccination is one of the most cost-effective ways of avoiding disease—it currently prevents 2-3 million deaths a year, and a further 1.5 million could be avoided if global coverage of vaccinations improved,” WHO said.

A research article published in 1998 in a medical journal suggested a link between a vaccine and the development of autism (孤独症) in young children. Although the research has been suspected and many other studies have proved that vaccinations do not cause autism, the article is still impressing people strongly today. Another reason for the growth in the anti-vaccination movement is widespread misinformation on social media, which can turn people against vaccination.” If a concerned parent consistently sees information in their Newsfeed that casts doubt on the safety of vaccines, it could cause them to disregard the advice of their children’s physicians and public health experts and refuse to follow the recommended vaccination schedule. So access to true information about vaccine safety is badly needed.

1. What does the AMA require social media to do on their platforms?
A.Stop vaccine misinformation.B.Unite to develop new vaccines.
C.Give up the anti- vaccination movement.D.Introduce Vaccine-preventable diseases.
2. Why does the author mention the measles cases?
A.To declare measles can be prevented               ,B.To show the result of anti-vaccination.
C.To prove some countries refuse vaccination       .D.To explain the reason for avoiding vaccination.
3. Which of the following play an important role in the anti- vaccination movement?
A.The costs of vaccination.B.The social media platforms.
C.The concerns of vaccine safety.D.The articles about autism.
4. Where is this text most likely from?
A.A novel.B.A travel brochure.C.A diary.D.A science magazine.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章认为社交媒体会给用户带来各种影响,有积极的,也有消极的,人们应该理性使用社交媒体。

4 . By now, we are all aware that social media has had a tremendous influence on our culture, in business, on the world-at-large. Social media websites revolutionized the way people communicate and socialize on the Web. However, aside from seeing your friend’s new baby on Facebook, or reading about Justin Bieber’s latest conflict with the law on Twitter, what are some of the real influences?

Social networks offer the opportunity for people to re-connect with their old friends and acquaintances, make new friends, share ideas and pictures, and many other activities. Users can keep pace with the latest global and local developments, and participate in campaigns and activities of their choices. Professionals use social media sites like LinkedIn to enhance their career and business development. Students can work together with their peers to improve their academic and communication skills.

Unfortunately, there are a few downsides too to social networking. If you are not careful, immoral people can target you for cyber bullying and disturbance on social sites. School children, young girls, and women can fall victim to online attacks which can create tension and suffering. If you are a victim of cyber bullying, do not take it lying down, but try to take appropriate legal action against the attacker.

Many companies have blocked social networks as addicted employees can distract themselves on such sites, instead of focusing on work. In fact, studies show that British companies have lost billions of dollars per year in productivity because of social media addiction among employees.

Also, what you carelessly post on the Internet can come back to trouble you. Revealing (泄露) personal information on social sites can make users vulnerable (易受伤害的) to crimes like identity theft, stalking, etc. Many companies perform a background check on the Internet before hiring an employee. If a potential employee has posted something embarrassing on social media, it can greatly affect their chances of getting the job. The same holds true for our relationships too, as our loved ones and friends may get to know if we post something undesirable on social networks.

Social media has its advantages and drawbacks as each coin has two sides. It is up to each user to use social sites wisely to enhance their professional and social life, and exercise caution to ensure they do not fall victim to online dangers.

1. Paragraph 2 mainly shows that social networks ________.
A.help students finish their homeworkB.offer professionals good chances
C.benefit users in various waysD.guide users to make right choices
2. Faced with problems caused by social media, some companies ________.
A.forbid the use of social networks during work time
B.avoid posting embarrassing information
C.refuse to hire potential addicted employees
D.take legal action against the attackers
3. The main purpose of this passage is to ________.
A.share experiences in using social mediaB.remind people to wisely use social media
C.provide some advice on social problemsD.raise public awareness of social problems
4. Which of the following shows the development of ideas in this passage?

5 . Kids and science seem to be made for each other!

The basic science is a combination of thought and experiment called the scientific method. It’s where you start with an idea, create a way to prove or disprove your idea, and show what you learned based on facts. Learning to follow this process helps you think logically and carefully. These important thinking skills can be used in many areas of study. To give a child practice with these thinking skills is like giving vitamins to a developing mind.

One of the greatest things we can teach our children is to love learning. Learning science is a great way to do so. Children are easy to be interested in science. Because much of science is hands-on, it attracts most children. Nothing makes a child sit up and take notice like the “WOW!” of a great science showing.

Science opens doors to many subjects at school. Building love for science can be helpful in other areas of study. For example, one cannot love science for very long without becoming good at its language-math! So science encourages children to study math. An interest in science is an interest in how things were once understood compared to how they are understood now. Thus studying science lends itself easily to studying history. And after you do an experiment, you need to write a lab report. Therefore, writing becomes an important part of science.

Science is the basic thing for much of our life. The science of farming shows how our food is produced; biomedical science keeps us healthy; even our beds these days are designed according to scientific facts. We almost eat, sleep and breathe with the help of science! When we prepare the next generation of voters, creators and policy makers, it is important to make sure they are not only comfortable but also good at science.

1. According to Paragraph 2, what does learning the scientific method mean to kids?
A.Learning to do experiments.B.Learning many areas of study.
C.Helping them develop thinking skills.D.Refusing any ideas that are not logical.
2. Which of the following statements would the author agree with?
A.Science is too difficult for children.B.Children usually consider science boring.
C.Science can arouse children's interest in learning.D.Children who are careless shouldn't learn science.
3. What happens to a child who works hard at science at school?
A.He usually has no time for other subjects.B.He usually loses interest in other activities.
C.He is usually bad at such subjects like history.D.He is likely to learn many other subjects well.
4. What would be the best title for the text?
A.Why Kids Should Learn ScienceB.Why Science Is Important
C.How Kids Can Make Use of ScienceD.What Kids Should Learn at School

6 . As parents, we walk a fine line between caring for our children and teaching them how to care for themselves. When they're little, they need our help with everything. Over time, kids usually take the lead on things like feeding and dressing themselves, but it can be difficult to know when it's time for them to start doing some basic things, such as packing their own lunches for school or solving problems with teachers without a parent's help.

Blogger Amy Carney recently shared a post about the things parents should stop doing for their teens. In it, Carney shared the basic skills that she expects her kids to master by the time they hit 13, such as waking themselves up in the morning, making their own breakfast and lunch, and finishing their own homework.

Barb Harvey, a childhood behavior expert, gave me her answer: The age at which children learn to master certain skills will be different depending upon the maturity (成熟) and interest level of the child.

I asked the same question among my friends. They gave all kinds of answers, which can explain Harvey's opinion.

Therefore, there's only one expert who can determine when your kids have the ability to deal with certain skills, and that's you. If your kids aren't ready to pack their own lunches — don't sweat it. Help them learn the skills they're ready to deal with and keep working towards the end goal of raising responsible and able adults. Because if there's one thing that we can all agree on as parents, it's that time moves quickly when you're raising kids. One day you will wish they could just do things without you and the next day, you will feel upset that they do.

1. What is Amy Carney's expectation when her children are 13?
A.To be a skillful cook.B.To follow Harvey's opinion.
C.To be an expert.D.To have basic skills.
2. Who can decide when the children will learn to care for themselves?
A.Amy Carney.B.Barb Harvey.
C.The children.D.The parents.
3. Why will parents feel upset when their children grow up?
A.Their kids can do nothing.
B.They feel less important.
C.Their children become able adults.
D.Their kids disagree on anything.
4. What does the text mainly talk about?
A.Walking a fine line.
B.Blogger Amy Carney.
C.Parents and their children's growth.
D.A childhood behavior expert.

7 . A large number of India’s poor kids receive little or no education. Even if they enter a formal school, their dropout rates are very high. Door Step School (DSS) aims to bridge the huge gap between these kids and education.

True to its name, Door Step School sets up a school right at the doorstep of kids who can’t get formal education due to a variety of reasons.

The team at DSS follows a direct model—they set up a classroom in any area, where they foresee the greatest need. They look for proper locations, and after making sure that enough resources are in place, they accept students in the area. DSS provides lessons of different levels. The organization even tries to provide classes in the local language, or whatever the students choose.

Another interesting project of DSS is a school on wheels. It uses a bus that has been changed into a classroom, which holds about 25 kids at a time.

Since it was started in 1988, Door Step School has spread from Mumbai to the neighbouring city of Pune in Maharashtra, covering a larger area and a number of kids. Now DSS has a team of more than 1,000 volunteers and teachers who change more than 70,000 lives each year.

DSS doesn’t end at kids. The organisation educates parents on the importance of sending their kids to school. Its efforts have brought education to thousands of students in the last two decades. Their belief in education for all has not only changed children’s lives but also continued the fight against one of the biggest problems India faces. All children have the right to an education, and DSS is providing just that.

1. What’s the aim of DSS?
A.To educate students informally.
B.To set up a formal school.
C.To introduce its organization.
D.To let poor kids get education.
2. Where does DSS build its classrooms?
A.In any area in need.
B.Near students’ school.
C.In the areas with large populations.
D.Far away from formal schools.
3. What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us about DSS?
A.Its future.
B.Its situation.
C.Its development.
D.Its management.
4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Most Indian children refuse to attend school.
B.Some Indian parents do not value education.
C.Poverty is the biggest problem in India.
D.What DSS provides has little effect.

8 . The world of work is changing. Are people ready for the new jobs? A survey of 15-year-olds across 41 countries by the OECD, a club of mostly rich countries, found that teenagers may have unrealistic expectations(期望) about the kind of work that will be available.

Four of the five most popular choices were common professional roles: doctors, teachers, business managers and lawyers, which generally have existed for a long time. Teenagers gathered around the most popular Jobs, with the top ten being chosen by 47% of boys and 53% of girls. Those shares were much higher than when the survey was conducted in 2000.

Teenagers can hardly be expected to have an indepth knowledge of the details of the job market. They have seen doctors and teachers in their daily lives. Other popular professions, such as lawyers and police officers, will be familiar from films and social media. But many people end up in jobs they have not heard of in their school years, and they settle for what is available.

The OECD points out that some of the fastest growing jobs are hardly mentioned by young people. Unsurprisingly, "user support technician " is placed only 158th out of 543 professions and computer user support specialist "appears in 229th place. Rather, it is shocking that young people do know that such jobs exist.

Besides, teenagers who want to deal with climate change are in luck. America's Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the two fastest-growing jobs over the next few years will be solar-photovoltaic installers(太阳能光伏安装人员) and wind-turbine technicians(风力涡轮机技术人员).

Some parts of the OECD survey are worrying. Even though top performers in maths or science are equally matched among boys and girls, more boys than girls expect to work in science or engineering -- the average gap across the OECD is more than ten percentage points.

1. What kind of jobs do teenagers prefer according to the survey?
A.The traditional ones.B.The challenging ones.
C.The ones suggested by adults.D.The ones related to their hobbies.
2. What does the author mean by saying"they settle for what is available "in Paragraph 3?
A.They work hard to get a better job.
B.They choose a job that they can find.
C.They consider the benefits of a job.
D.They are determined to make progress in their jobs.
3. What is teenagers' attitude towards the fastest- growing jobs?
A.Concerned.B.Surprised.C.Disappointed.D.Uninterested.
4. What is the author 's worry according to the last paragraph?
A.Boys perform better than girls in science work.
B.Girls interested in science face more difficulties in Job hunting.
C.There is a gap between boys and girls in choosing science work.
D.There is a lack of satisfaction from science work for boys and girls.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章由问题“谁是天才?”引入,论述了世人对天才的狭隘定义,提出事实上“天才”有很多种形式,不要让思维限制了我们的“天才”能力。

9 . Who is a genius? This question has greatly interested humankind for centuries.

Let’s state clearly: Einstein was a genius. His face is almost the international symbol for genius. But we want to go beyond one man and explore the nature of genius itself. Why is it that some people are so much more intelligent or creative than the rest of us? And who are they?

In the sciences and arts, those praised as geniuses were most often white men, of European origin. Perhaps this is not a surprise. It’s said that history is written by the victors, and those victors set the standards for admission to the genius club. When contributions were made by geniuses outside the club—women, or people of a different color or belief—they were unacknowledged and rejected by others.

A study recently published by Science found that as young as age six, girls are less likely than boys to say that members of their gender(性别)are “really, really smart.” Even worse, the study found that girls act on that belief: Around age six they start to avoid activities said to be for children who are “really, really smart.” Can our planet afford to have any great thinkers become discouraged and give up? It doesn’t take a genius to know the answer: absolutely not.

Here’s the good news. In a wired world with constant global communication, we’re all positioned to see flashes of genius wherever they appear. And the more we look, the more we will see that social factors(因素)like gender, race, and class do not determine the appearance of genius. As a writer says, future geniuses come from those with “intelligence, creativity, perseverance(毅力), and simple good fortune, who are able to change the world.”

1. What does the author think of victors’ standards for joining the genius club?
A.They’re unfair.B.They’re conservative.
C.They’re objective.D.They’re strict.
2. What can we infer about girls from the study in Science?
A.They think themselves smart.
B.They look up to great thinkers.
C.They see gender differences earlier than boys.
D.They are likely to be influenced by social beliefs
3. Why are more geniuses known to the public?
A.Improved global communication.
B.Less discrimination against women.
C.Acceptance of victors’ concepts.
D.Changes in people’s social positions.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Geniuses Think AlikeB.Genius Takes Many Forms
C.Genius and IntelligenceD.Genius and Luck
