We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixedability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming(把……按能力分班) pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the notsobright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!

Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills and we find that mixedability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning.

In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to cooperate to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to deal with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.

Sometimes the pupils __________;sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.

3 . Alexis, 17, sat quietly in the passenger seat of her dad’s car. She let her eyes lazily scan, the landscape for wildlife. Then a deer came into view about 200 yards in front of them. “Dad, there’s a deer there!” Alexis said. It was a male deer with sharp sntlers() on each side of its head.

As the car moved closer, Alexis saw that the deer’s head was bent toward the ground. Then she heard a scream and saw an arm fly up near the deer’s head. Alexis realized the deer was attacking a woman. Sue, a 44-year-old mother, had been out for her morning run. The deer followed her and edged closer. “I knew I was in trouble,” Sue says. She went to pick up a stick for self-defense, and the deer charged. It lifted her with its antlers and threw her into the air. Sue could feel blood flew down her leg. Within seconds, the deer had pushed her off the road.

When Alexis and her father pulled up, the deer was throwing Sue like a doll. Alexis looked into the woman’s terrified eyes, and before her father had even stopped the car, the teenager jumped quickly out of the car and ran toward the deer. “I was kicking it to get its attention,” she says. Then her father, who had followed his daughter, pushed the deer away from the women.

Alexis helped Sue into the car, and then applied a piece of cloth to Sue’s injured leg. “We’re going to get you to a hospital,” Alexis said. Then she heard her father shout loudly. He had been knocked to the ground. Alexis took hold of a hammer from the car and ran to where her father lay on his back. She beat the deer’s head and neck, but the blows didn’t scare it away. “I was losing faith,” she says. “A couple more strikes, Alexis,” said her father. “You can do it.” Turning the hammer around, Alexis closed her eyes and beat the deer’s neck with all her strength. When she opened her eyes, the deer was running away. Alexis got in the driver’s seat and sped toward the nearest hospital.

After Sue was treated, she tearfully thanked her rescuers. “You expect a teenage girl to get on the phone and call for help,” she says, “not to beat up a deer.”

4 . Have you ever run into a careless cell phone user on the street? Perhaps they were busy talking, texting or checking updates on WeChat without looking at what was going on around them. As the number of this new “species” of human has kept rising, they have been given a new name — phubbers(低头族).

Recently, a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts put this group of people under the spotlight. In the short film, phubbers with various social identities(身份) bury themselves in their phones. A doctor plays with his cell phone while letting his patient die, a pretty woman takes selfie in front of a car accident site, and a father loses his child without knowing about it while using his mobile phone. A chain of similar events eventually leads to the destruction of the world.

Although the ending sounds overstated, the damage phubbing can bring is real.

Your health is the first to bear the effect and result of it. “Constantly bending your head to check your cell phone could damage your neck,” Guangming Daily quoted doctors as saying. “the neck is like a rope that breaks after long-term stretching.” Also, staring at cell phones for long periods of time will damage your eyesight gradually, according to the report.

But that’s not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive you away from your friends and family. At reunions with family or friends, many people tend to stick to their cell phones while others are chatting happily with each other and this creates a strange atmosphere, Qilu Evening News reported.

It can also cost you your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell to their death, suffered accidents, and were robbed of their cell phones in broad daylight.

1. For what purpose does the author give the example of a cartoon in Paragragh2?
A.To inform people of the bad effects of phubbing.
B.To advertise the cartoon made by students.
C.To indicate the world will finally be destroyed by phubbers.
D.To warn doctors against using cell phones while treating patients.
2. Which of the following is NOT a risk a phubber may have?
A.His social skills could be affected.
B.His neck and eyesight will be gradually harmed.
C.He will cause the destruction of the world.
D.He might get separated from his friends and family.
3. Which of the following may be the author’s attitude towards phubbing?
A.Supportive.B.Opposed.
C.Optimistic.D.Objective.
4. What may the passage talk about next?
A.Advice on how to use a cell phone.B.People addicted to phubbing.
C.Measures to reduce the risks of phubbing.D.Consequences of phubbing.

5 . I am a strong believer that if a child is raised with praise, he will learn to love himself and will be successful in his own way.

Several weeks ago, I was doing homework with my son in the third grade and he kept standing up from his chair to go over the math lines. I kept asking him to sit down, telling him that he would concentrate better. He sat but seconds later, as if he didn’t even notice he was doing it, he got up again. I was getting frustrated, but then it hit me. I started noticing his answers were much quicker and accurate (准确的) when he stood up. Could he be more intent (专心的) while standing up?

This made me start questioning myself and what I had been raised to believe. I was raised to believe that a quiet, calm child was a sure way to success. This child would have the discipline (纪律) to study hard, get good grades and become someone important in life.

Now those same people perhaps come to realize that their kids are born with their own sets of DNA and personality traits (特点) and all you can do is loving and accepting them. As parents, throughout their growing years and beyond that, we need to be our kids’ best cheerleaders, guiding them and helping them find their way.

I have stopped asking my son to sit down and concentrate. Obviously, he is concentrating just in his own way and not mine. We need to learn to accept our kids’ ways of doing things. Some way may have worked for me but doesn’t mean we need to carry it through generations. There is nothing sweeter than being individual (个人的) and unique (独一无二的). It makes us free and happy and that’s just the way I want my kids to live their own life.

1. At the beginning, the author tried to keep his son seated in order to make him _____.
A.pay more attention to his studyB.keep silent in the room
C.finish his homework on timeD.get right answers
2. Inspired by the case of his son, the author began to doubt ________.
A.the importance of parentsB.the old form of education
C.the relationship between kids and their parentsD.the good grades of some kids
3. According to the passage, which of the following statements is right?
A.We should help kids correct their wrong ways.
B.Parents should study their kids’ DNA.
C.Kids should be taught to behave themselves.
D.Parents should love and accept their kids.
4. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?
A.Study hard and you’ll be successful
B.Be friendly to your children
C.Children’s success in their own style
D.Parents’ help with their children’s study

7 . Oil is essential for modern life. About 64 percent of the world’s oil is located in the Middle East, but the heaviest consumers of oil are Europe, America, and Japan. The problem lies in getting the oil from the countries that produce it to the countries that consume it. This is mainly done using oil tankers. Usually the oil is shipped safely and with no problems, but occasionally there is a disaster.

Every year millions of tons of oil are spilled into the ocean. Although this is only a small percentage of the total amount shipped around the world each year, this spilled oil can have terrible effects on ocean life, including the coastlines where the oil washes up onto shore.

One of the worst oil spills in history occurred along the Alaskan coastline in 1989, when the Exxon Valdez tanker got stuck off the coast of Alaska, spilling 42 million liters of oil. Although it wasn’t the largest oil spill, the disaster was terrible because it occurred in such a sensitive natural area. In this spill, the tanker’s captain, who was tired from overwork and drinking alcohol, had gone to take a rest. He gave control of the ship to another sailor, who was unfamiliar with the route. The ship ran onto Bligh Reef. Damaged by the reef, the ship leaked oil out into the ocean. More than 1,600 kilometers of coastline were affected by the oil spill. Many birds and otters died as a result of the oil covering their skin, and many other sea creatures and the animals that fed on them were also severely affected.

1. Which country is NOT among the largest consumers of oil?
A.JapanB.Iraq
C.AmericaD.Germany
2. What does the underlined “them” refer to?
A.The birds.B.The otters.
C.The sea creatures.D.The birds and the otters.
3. Which of the following statement is true?
A.The oil leak of Alaska is because the captain was unfamiliar with the route.
B.Many birds and otters died from eating the spilled oil.
C.Alaska spill was the most serious spill of all time.
D.Although some oil leak is not serious, it will affect ocean life.

8 . The spread of Western eating habits around the world is bad for human health and the environment. These findings come from a new report in the journal Nature.

David Tillman, a professor of ecology at the University of Minnesota, America, examined information from 100 countries to identify what people ate and how diet affected health. He noted a movement beginning in the 1960s. He found that as nations industrialized, population increased and earnings rose, more people began to adopt what has been called the Western diet.

The Western diet is high in sugar, fat, oil and meat. By eating these foods, people began to get fatter and sicker. David Tillman says overweight people are at greater risk of non-infectious diseases like diabetes (糖尿病)and heart disease.

Unfortunately, when people become industrialized, if they adopt this Western diet, they are going to have these health problems, especially in developing countries in Asia. China is an example where the number of diabetes cases has been jumping from less than one percent to 10 percent of the population as it began to industrialize over a 20-year period. And that is happening all across the world, in Nigeria and so on.

And, a diet bad for human beings is also bad for the environment. As the world’s population grows, more forests and tropical areas will become farmland for crops or grasslands for cattle. We are likely to have more greenhouse gas in the future from agriculture than that coming out of all forms of transportation right now.

Mr. Tillman calls the link between diet, the environment and human health, “a dilemma”, a problem offering a difficult choice. He says one possible solution is leaving the Western diet behind.

1. David Tillman believes that          .
A.diet, the environment and human health are closely connected
B.the Western diet is the only choice as nations industrialized
C.people in tropical areas are more likely to have heart disease
D.traditional diet is more balanced than the Western diet
2. According to the passage, more greenhouse gas might be given off in the future from       .
A.transportationB.developing countries
C.agricultureD.developed countries
3. What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Nigeria has the largest number of diabetes cases.
B.Overweight people are at higher risk of infectious diseases.
C.The examined information comes from developing countries.
D.Industrialization contributes to the spread of the Western diet.
4. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.Call on us to protect the environment.
B.Warn us of the danger of the Western diet.
C.Remind us of the importance of health.
D.Advise us to have a balanced diet.

10 . One Moore Elementary school teacher is showing students the importance of communication through “shout-outs”. Third Grade Moore Elementary Teacher Lindsey Winders said a shout-out is a compliment(称赞) that students can say or write down. “Like, ‘hey I noticed you doing a really great job solving your math problems yesterday. I wanted to make sure you know that I saw you do that,’” Winders said.

Winders said she makes sure she is giving shout-outs to her students every day. “I might write them a sticky note, or write them a quick little note in their planner. I might just say it to them on their way into the classroom or on their way out of the classroom, but most importantly I try to do it every day,” Winders said.

In addition to the compliments, Winders has the students greet(问候) each other every morning during morning meeting. She will have students give examples to the class of how to communicate in different settings(场景). Third grade student Nayelli Moranchel said she had given at least six shout-outs this year. “It makes me happy, because they always write something back,” Moranchel said.

Recently, Winders took it one step further and wrote a personalized note on each of her students’ desk. “In our classroom, sometimes it can be challenging for me to give a compliment or a shout-out to each and every one of them in a way that feels equal(平等的) and valuable at the same time. So I decide that there is no better way than leaving a note on their desk that can stay for as long as they wants it to,” Winders said.

Winders said it is encouraging when she sees her students copy the act, and give each other compliments without her guidance(指导).

A.Giving a shout-out.
B.Solving math problems.
C.Teaching important lessons.
D.Writing down the names of students.
2. How does Winders show her students the importance of compliments?
A.By helping them take notes.
B.By making practical plans for them.
C.By serving as a daily example herself.
D.By greeting them during morning meeting.
3. What is the best way that Winders finds to give her students compliments?
A.Leaving a note on each student’s desk.
B.Praising them as long as they want it.
C.Explaining the value of compliments.
