First, bicycles do not use up any fuel. Therefore, they cost less than other means of transport. Besides, bicycles do not need many space on the road, and it is easily to find a place for it. And everybody knows that riding a bicycle is healthy sport.

When people drive their cars to work or shop, they lost the chance to exercise, but the waste gas from the cars will pollute the air. And moreover, people feel annoying when looking for a parking lot in the busy city center. So I prefer riding a bicycle to drive a car.

We are looking forward to a cleaner and better environment by changing our life style.

How Women Were Freed From Their Homes
As late as 1800, a woman’s only place was in her home. Women in business were unheard of.   No respectable woman would dream of entering what was strictly a “man’s world”. Even if she would, what could she do? Men were sure that no woman could do a job well outside her home.   This was a widely-accepted idea. When the famous Bronte sisters began writing books in 1846, they had to resort to using men’s names as aliases.
Teaching was the first profession opened to women, soon after 1800. But even that was not easy for women to take because most high schools and colleges were open only to men. Oberlin College in Ohio was the first college in America to take in women.
Nursing was regarded as a respectable profession for women only after Florence Nightingale won high credit for her nursing career and became famous. Miss Nightingale opened the first training school for nursing in 1860 in England.
The invention of typewriters in 1867 helped to bring women out of their homes to join the business world. Because women are careful and have nimble fingers, businessmen found that they were well suited to this kind of work.
By 1890, tens of thousands of women were working in schools, hospitals, shops, offices, and factories both in England and the States. Some even managed to become doctors or lawyers. The idea of women working in business and other circles was accepted.
1. Oberlin College was the first college in America ________.
A.where teaching was a profession only open to women
B.where girls could get advanced education
C.to train women to be teachers and nurses
D.to accept women only as professors and students
2. It can be inferred from the text that besides nursing, Florence Nightingale was also ________.
A.a doctor
B.a lawyer
C.a teacher
D.a businessman
3. Quite a lot of women entered the business world ________.
A.soon after 1800
B.when Nightingale became famous
C.at the beginning of this century
D.after the typewriter came into being

The law says women should have the chance of doing the same jobs as men and earn the same as them. The reality is very different. Women lose because, 25 years after the Equal Pay Act, many of them still get paid less than men. They lose because they do lower-paid jobs which men just won’t consider. And they lose because they are the ones who interrupt a career to have children.   All this is reported in an independent study ordered by the Government’s women’s unit. The biggest problem isn’t equal pay in workplaces such as factories. It is the sort of work women do.
Make a list of low-paid-jobs, then consider who does them. Try nurses, secretaries, cleaners, clerks, teachers in primary schools, dinner ladies and child-care helpers. Not a lot of men among that group, are there? Yet some of those jobs are really important. Surely no one would deny that about nurses and teachers, for a start. So why do we reward the people who do them so poorly? There can be only one answer—because they are women. This is not going to be put right overnight. But the government, which employs a lot of them, and other bosses have to make a start.
It is disgraceful (可耻的) that we have gone into the 21st century still treating women like second-class citizens.
1. Women should have the chance of doing the same jobs and getting the same pay as men _________.
A.after 25 years
B.according to the law
C.as a result of those important jobs
D.because women are as strong as men
2. We can learn from the text that what really matters in this problem is _________.
A.that women interrupt a career to have children
B.what sort of work women do
C.because they are women
D.what unfair pay women get in workplaces
3. Which of the followings best describes the writer’s idea?
A.Women and men should get equal pay for equal work.
B.Women should strengthen themselves.
C.The government ought to protect women against getting paid less than men.
D.Some of the jobs that women do are of great importance.
4. Which do you think would be the best title for this passage?
A.Work to give women a fair pay deal
B.The equal pay act
C.The sort of work women do
D.The biggest problem about women

7 . Finding the Real You
Psychometric testing—personality testing—has been very popular nowadays as studies show their results to be three times more accurate in predicting your job performance. These tests are now included in almost all graduate recruitment (招聘) and are widely used in the selection of managers.
The most popular of these personality tests is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). It is based on the theory that we are born with a tendency to one personality type which stays more or less fixed throughout life. You answer 88 questions and are then given your “type”, such as Outgoing or Quiet, Feeling or Thinking.
Critics of personality testing raise doubts about “social engineering”. Psychologist Dr. Colin Gill warns that the “popular” personality traits (特性) have their disadvantages. “People who are extremely open to new experiences can be butterflies, going from one idea to the next without mastering any of them.” However, the psychometric test is here to stay, which may be why a whole sub-industry on cheating personality tests has sprung up. “It’s possible to cheat,” admits Gill, “but having to pretend to be the person you are at work will be tiring and unhappy and probably short-lived.”
So can we change our personality? “Your basic personality is fixed by the time you’re 21,”says Gill,“ but it can be affected by motivation and intelligence. If you didn’t have the personality type to be a doctor but desperately wanted to be one and were intelligent enough to master the skills, you could still go ahead. But trying to go too much against type for too long requires much energy and is actually to be suffered for long. I think it’s why we’re seeing this trend for downshifting—too many people trying to fit in to a type that they aren’t really suited for.”
Our interest in personality now exists in every part of our lives. If you ask an expert for advice on anything, you’ll probably be quizzed about your personality. But if personality tests have any value to us, perhaps it is to free us from the idea that all of us are full of potential, and remind us of what we are. As they say in one test when they ask for your age: pick the one you are, not the one you wish you were.
1. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is based on the belief that ______.
A.certain personality traits are common
B.personality is largely decided from birth
C.some personality types are better than others
D.personality traits are various from time to time
2. According to Dr. Gill, what is the problem with personality tests?
A.Employers often find the results unclear.
B.They may have a negative effect on takers.
C.People can easily lie about their true abilities.
D.The results could be opposite to what employers want.
3. In Dr. Gill’s view, how easy is it to change your personality?
A.It’s possible in your adult life.
B.It’s easy if you have great motivation.
C.It’s difficult before the age of 21.
D.It’s unlikely because it requires much energy.
4. What final conclusion does the author reach about the value of personality tests?
A.They are not really worth doing.
B.They may encourage greater realism.
C.They are of doubtful value to employers.
D.They can strengthen the idea we have of our abilities.

One day, I was cooking in the kitchen when the telephone rings. I went to answer it immediately. She was my close friend, Lisa. When we were talking on a phone, the fire alarm sounded. I dashed back to the kitchen. The room full of smoke and the beef was bad burnt. I quickly turned off the gas, opening all the windows, and then rushed out of the house. 文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了早恋可能会给年轻人带来压力,并导致抑郁,建议年轻人如何避免这样的问题

10 . A new study of 8,000 young people in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior shows that although love can make adults live healthily and happily, it is a bad thing for young people. Puppy love (早恋) may bring stress for young people and can lead to depression. The study shows that girls become more depressed than boys, and younger girls are the worst of all.

The possible reason for the connection between love and higher risk of depression for girls is “loss of self”. According to the study, even though boys would say “lose themselves in a romantic relationship”, this “loss of self” is much more likely to lead to depression when it happens to girls. Young girls who have romantic relationships usually like hiding their feelings and opinions. They won’t tell that to their parents.

Dr Marian Kaufman, an expert on young people problems, says 15% to 20% young people will have depression during their growing. Trying romance often causes the depression. She advises kids not to jump into romance too early. During growing up, it is important for young people to build strong friendships and a strong sense of self. She also suggests the parents should encourage their kids to keep close to their friends, attend more interesting school activities and spend enough time with family.

Parents should watch for signs of depression — eating or mood changes — and if they see signs from their daughters or sons, they need to give help. The good news is that the connection between romance and depression seems to become weak with age. Love will always make us feel young, but only maturity (成熟) gives us a chance to avoid its bad side effects.

1. Which of the following is more likely to have depression?
A.Young people who have a strong sense of selfishness.
B.Young girls who always hide their feelings and opinions.
C.Young boys whose parents watch for their behavior.
D.Careless parents whose children are deep in love.
2. What can be inferred from the passage?
A.The older a woman is, the less likely she seems to lose herself in romance.
B.Lacking love can lead young people to grow up more quickly.
C.Early love makes young people keep close to their friends and parents.
D.Parents should help their children to be aware of the signs of depression.
3. What’s the author’s attitude towards puppy love?
A.Confused.B.Disinterested.C.Scared.D.Disapproving.
4. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Puppy love may bring young people depression.
B.Parents should forbid their children’s love.
C.Romance is a two-edged sword for adults.
D.Romance is good for young people.
