This is an unbelievable real Christmas story: one of courage, life and passing on love.

Twenty-five years ago, Ray Anderson, a single parent with a one-year-old son, was returning home after giving out gifts to the needy people on Christmas Eve when he witnessed a terrible accident which took place when the driver of a truck ran a red light and collided (碰撞)with the car of Sandra Jenkins. The influence of the collision killed Sandra instantly, but her three-month-old daughter was left trapped upside down in the burning car seemingly doomed to a fiery tomb.

While others looked on in horror, Anderson jumped out of his car and crawled (爬)into the car through the broken window to try to free the baby. Seconds later, the car was totally on fire, but Anderson was unexpectedly able to pull the baby to safety. While the child came out of the accident with no injuries, Anderson suffered third degree burns over 80 percent of his body.

Two days later, Anderson died, but his heroic act was published widely in the media. Anderson’s son was soon raised by relative, and the family moved to the East Coast.

The most unbelievable part of this story unfolded only last week. Karen and her fiance(未婚夫), Aaron, were looking through some old boxes in the basement of Karen’s home when they came across some old newspapers. “This is me when I was a newborn baby. My mother was busy with some volunteer work when the accidnet happened. I was rescued from a burning car, but my mother died in the accident,” explained Karen. Although Aaron knew Karen’s mother had died years earlier, he never fully understood the situation until he started to skim over the newspaper article. Karen continued to sort through some old books when saw Aaron absorbed in the details of the accident.

There was a pretty strict system of segregation (种族隔离)in Atlanta. For a long, long time I could not go swimming. until there was a Negro YMCA(黑人基督教青年会). A Negro child in Atlanta could not go to any public park. I could not go to the so-called white schools. In many of the stores downtown, I couldn’t go to a lunch counter to buy a hamburger or a cup of coffee. I could not attend any of the theaters. There were one or two Negro theaters, but they didn’t get any of the main pictures. If they did get them, they got them two or three years later.

I had grown up hating not only segregation but also the cruel acts that grew out of it. I had seen police violence with my own eyes, and watched Negroes receive the most tragic injustice in the courts. I can remember the organization known as the Ku Kux Klan. It stands out white supremacy(至高无上), and it was an organization that in those days even used violent methods to preserve segregation and to keep the Negro in his place. I remember seeing the Klan actually beat Negro. I had passed spots where Negroes had been savagely lynched (用私刑). All of these things did something to my growing personality.

In my late childhood and early adolescence, two incidents happened that had a tremendous effect on my development. The first was the first empty seats at the front of the store. A young white clerk came up and murmured politely:

”I’ll be happy to wait on you if you’ll just move to those seats in the back. “

Dad immediately replied, ”There’s nothing wrong with these seats. We’re quite comfortable here. “

”Sorry, “said the clerk, ”but you’ll have to move. “

”We’ll either buy shoes sitting here, “my father said quickly, ”or we won’t buy shoes at all. "

5 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Now another American education icon may be disappearing: the hardbound (精装的) textbook. More and more school districts are replacing traditional textbooks with electronic ones. Electronic textbooks are usually accessed either through an online server or are downloaded to student laptops.

In North Texas, Plano and Irving schools are introducing e-books into a few classrooms, and Lancaster school officials also are considering them. But no local district appears to be going as far as Forney. The district most likely would be the first in the state to use e-books in every classroom for grades five to twelve.

Officials point out several reasons for turning to e-books. For one, they are easier to update. Thus the publishers are able to find ways to do online textbooks and they can go back and change information. Using e-books will better prepare students for college and the workplace.

Rapid district growth is another reason. The number of the students in the district is expected to double within five years. It's difficult to know textbook needs in advance and some students wait months for their books. But e-books can be uploaded onto a“blank” laptop in a few hours.

Cost may eventually be a deciding cause for choosing e-books, but there are no big savings yet. Even if they get it electronically, they still have to pay for the book because they're buying the instructional material. That may change as more and more districts move toward e-books.

Today's students have little trouble adjusting to laptops and e-books, said Connie Cooley, who has taught at the Academy of Irving ISD for five years. But she said it could worry teachers. "It's harder for people who are right around my age and older," said Ms. Cooley, 36. "I'm laptop-savvy, so I was ready for it, but those that aren't area little worrying."

18-year-old Sadiya was born in Deora, a small village in eastern India, but moved to the city of Mumbai when she was 3.In 2020, when the pandemic(疫情)broke out, her father’s small business was forced to close temporarily and the family returned to her ancestral village to wait out the pandemic.

However, it greatly shocked her when she found that attending school was uncommon in Deora, where almost half of the villagers couldn’t read. Unable to afford textbooks, many families often withdrew their children from schools. They didn’t wish to educate their children, many of whom had to work in the fields with parents though some had the desire to read.

Sadiya, the college girl with a strong sense of social responsibility, has been trying to seize opportunities to open doors for others. Fluent in Hindi, Urdu, and English, she often speaks at inter-college events on the right to education and enjoys a high reputation among college students.

Used to taking on challenges, Sadiya was determined to do something for the children. One day last July, Sadiya sat down with her family elders and proposed the idea of setting up a library”. Many shook their heads in disagreement—this wasn’t how a young girl should spend her time.

After many discussions, Sadiya finally convinced them and gained access to her relative’s guesthouse, mending it with $67 that she’d won in public-speaking awards. She took the help of her uncle, Akbar, and cousin, Nawaz, and got to work. Walls were repainted, the bamboo roof was repaired and lights and bookshelves were fixed, and the room was filled with chairs and a long table.Vivid charts stuck on the walls—from anatomy(解剖)to transportation, lightened the space. Looking at the newly-decorated“library”, Sadiya couldn’t hold back her excitement while imagining the children reading books here by light.

All was ready except books. So what Sadiya was desperate to do next was fill the shelves with books. She drew on all her savings and purchased many books suitable for children online.
