1 . People today are not unfamiliar with term such as "going eco-friendly" and "sustainable lifestyle". However, there exists a group of sceptics(怀疑论者)who believe that going eco-friendly is merely a fad(一时的风尚). I disagree with this viewpoint, Going eco-friendly is not merely a fad and it does, in fact, change the beliefs and attitudes of people.

The long-term presence of environmental organisations shows the efforts that people have made towards going eco-friendly. Organisations such as World Wildlife Fund advocate people to go eco-friendly. The high involvement of the organisations and the participants is thus a strong indicator that going eco-friendly is not merely a fad but a trend that can last decades.

Another strong indicator is the emergence of sustainable products in many industries, such as organic produce and electric vehicles. The consumer demand, coupled with eco-conscious(环保意识的)businesses, is behind the sharp increase in such products. This shows a shift in the beliefs and attitudes of people towards adopting a sustainable lifestyle. Thus, it seems quite certain that going eco-friendly is not merely a fad.

While some people who broadcast their eco-friendly practices are criticised for just hoping to project an eco-conscious image, there are a number of celebrities who have been practising the zero-waste lifestyle for years. For those who do so for years, and not mere days or months, it is indeed a commitment that can only come with a true change in beliefs and attitudes towards caring for the earth.

The call to save the earth looks set to stay. With the development of technology and the appearance of many platforms advocating going green, people are more willing to change their beliefs and attitudes when they can learn about and appreciate the positive impact of the work of different environmental organisations and individuals. It is hoped that these effects will go a long way in ensuring that our planet will remain a suitable place to live in.

2 . Too much screen time for kids can lead to poor health the American Heart Association (AHA) says. A scientific statement published by the AHA in the medical journal Circulation said screen time from smartphones, tablet computers and other devices can lead kids to a sedentary(惯于久坐不动的) lifestyle ,increasing the possibility that they grow up as overweight or obese(肥胖的).

The AHA is the latest organization urging parents to limit how much time their kids spend in front of screens. It recommends children get one to two hours of screen time each day. Although television viewing among children and teens has dropped, the use of smartphones and tablet computers has surged.

“Although the mechanisms(机制) linking screen time to obesity are not entirely clear, there are real concerns that screens influence eating behaviors, mainly because children don’t notice when they are full when eating in front of a screen,” said Tracie Barnett, a researcher at the INRS-Institut Armand-Frappier Research Centre,in a statement.

Barnett, one of the authors of the statement, also urges parents to keep screens out of kids’bedrooms, raising the fear that too much screen time can affect sleep.

Many studies have warned about the potential (潜在的) negative effects of too much screen time. Last year, a study from researchers at San Diego State University(SDSU) found nearly half of teens who spent five or more hours in front of screens every day experienced long periods of hopelessness or sadness.

Apple, who makes the iOS mobile platform, plans to introduce new tools to devices to help users cut back on screen time. As for iOS 12,iPhones will include a screen time feature where users can control and review how they spend time on their mobile devices. Another company that makes the Android platform will introduce “digital well-being” tools such as screen time limits and a “wind down” option to encourage users to put down their phones before bed.

1. Which can replace the underlined word “surged” in paragraph 2?
A.Increased suddenly.B.Decreased slowly.
C.Stayed the same.D.Lost the balance.
2. How do screens influence children’s eating behavior?
A.By changing the time they eat.B.By changing their taste for food.
C.By influencing how fast they eat.D.By influencing their feeling of fullness.
3. What effect did too much screen time have in SDSU’s study?
A.It affected children’s sleep.B.It led to children’s obesity.
C.It resulted in diet problems.D.It negatively influenced moods.
4. What will Apple do to deal with the screen time problem?
A.Reduce its products’ battery life.
B.Provide a screen time feature.
C.Introduce “digital well-being” tools.
D.Add a “wind down” option to its products.

4 . Nowadays, handwriting seems to become less necessary, for young children learn to tap and touch screens before they have even learned to pick up a pencil or tie their shoelaces. Most of our written communication is done through texting on mobile phones or typing on a keyboard. And voice recognition software is becoming more and more advanced一making even keyboard unnecessary!

So, are handwriting skills important to your child? Actually, handwriting is an exercise in eye-hand coordination (手眼协调), an important part of visual-motor (视觉运动) skills, which are connected with achievements in study. Scientists found that developing fine visual-motor skills in early childhood can lead to not only writing success, but better performance in reading and math in elementary school. It was also found that kids who fail to write neatly and efficiently are often accused of being lazy, and this may affect their behavior and self-worth. Moreover, a study showed that when a group of children were asked to come up with ideas for an article, the ones with better handwriting were more active and had quicker minds. In some ways, handwriting helps their brains' development.

The first attempts at writing can be challenging for pre-school children-- whose fine motor (精细动作)skills are not yet fully developed. But some skills to prepare for handwriting are simple to build at home and in preschool. Parents should provide lots of opportunities for kids to copy and draw shapes and simple pictures in early childhood before letters are introduced. Let your child copy your shapes in sand, or with chalk on a board before trying to draw the shapes on their own. Encourage your child to spend less time on electronic devices and more time on activities to improve eye-hand coordination.

Let's face it - technology is certain to continue developing and more research is needed to find the best ways to teach handwriting to young children. But, there' s plenty of evidence that the handwriting practice can provide young children with a good start in developing skills needed for a healthy and successful journey in school.

5 . Because of COVID-19, in many places, large gatherings of people aren’t allowed. In some areas, the rules are more strict, and people aren't allowed to leave their homes unless going out is absolutely necessary.

These steps are very important for slowing the disease down. By doing this, governments can make sure doctors and hospitals are better able to deal with all the sick people, and that fewer people suffer in all. Usually, it's called “flattening the curve”.

But if no one can go out, that means businesses which depend on visitors struggle. Many singers, bands, and other musicians would normally be giving concerts now. Instead, they have to find new ways to share their music and connect with their audiences. The Metropolitan Opera in New York has canceled(取消) its season, but it is showing a special live stream of a different opera each day on its website. Other opera companies have made similar moves. Several theater companies are either offering recorded versions of their plays online or posting videos of their actors performing.

Nick Green wrote a musical play that was canceled because of the virus. He set up a website with links that allow people to enjoy the work of artists around the world who have had their projects canceled. He called his project the Social Distancing Festival. He sad it was a time when he should be doing something new, rather than feeling disappointed.

Even TV shows have to find new ways to film their shows. Some late night TV shows have continued, but without audiences. Others are showing reruns.

While their shows are on pause, some TV stars like Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon have been filming short videos at home. Mr. O’ Brien plans to bring his show back on the air soon by filming with his own phone and talking with guests over the Internet.

6 . The China International Search and Rescue Team(CISAR) was formed in 2001 and is now made up of several hundred rescue workers and about 20 police dogs. The team brings help and hope to those whose lives are changed by a storm, flood, earthquake, or any other natural disasters.

After long and careful training, the team went on its first international rescue tasks in 2003. That year, the Chinese team helped save lives after earthquakes in Algeria and Iran. It was the first time that a Chinese team had worked outside China whose members won high praise for bravery and skill.

Since then, the CISAR has completed many tasks. The list of people to whom help has been given is long. The team treated more than 3,000 people who were wounded in the 2006 earthquake in Indonesia, helped 2,500 wounded people after the earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010, and spent several months giving aid to over 25,000 people suffering from the 2010 floods in Pakistan. On April 26, 2015, a group of 62 people from CISAR went to Nepal after the 8.1 magnitude earthquake that happened there.

Rescue workers are trained to find people, treat wounds, and hand out food, water, and other supplies. They have to be able to do work that is difficult under conditions which can be very dangerous. After a disaster, there is usually no electricity or water, and there may be diseases and other dangers. Rescue workers get to save lives, but they must also bury the dead. That means they have to be strong in both body and mind.

Rescue workers must have big hearts, too. It takes a lot of love and courage to risk one’s own life to save someone else’s. The members of the CISAR have plenty of both and are always ready to go wherever help is needed.

1. What is the function of the numbers in Paragraph 3?

7 . We all know it is important for students to get a good night’s sleep every night. They aren’t able to do their best unless they sleep well. Most experts agree that the proper number of hours is eight, and this has been accepted as common sense for as long as I can remember. However, I was young once and I know that most of you get much less sleep than that-and sometimes this affects your schoolwork.

I read an article in a teachers’ magazine recently. They did a study of 848 students in a senior school. Worryingly, the results suggested that teenagers are facing a new problem. They may go to bed and get up at proper times but a growing number wake up in the middle of the night, not to use the bathroom or have a snack but because of FOMO-the fear of missing out!

According to the article, schoolchildren suffer because of an increasing trend to wake up during the night to check social media. Afraid of missing a message or chance to take part in a discussion, teens wake up at all times of the night to go online and join up with social groups. All this happens when they should be sound asleep.

The report gives some worrying numbers. 23% of 12-to 15-year-olds wake up nearly every night to use social media. Another 15% wake up at night once a week for the same reason. As a result, one in three students are constantly exhausted and unable to do well at school.

So, I’d like to ask you to be responsible when it comes to social media. Be brave and turn off your phones and computers at night. The world won’t end and your social media will be waiting to greet you in the morning. I give you my word that you won’t have missed anything important.

1. What is the new trend among teenagers?
A.They get up too early in the morning.
B.They wake up at midnight to go online.
C.They wake up at night to get something to eat.
D.They have difficulty in falling asleep again at night.
2. According to the passage, what is FOMO?
A.A fear of going online.
B.A need to go out all the time.
C.A fear of losing touch on social media.
D.A need to use the latest technology.
3. Which of the following best explains the underlined word in Paragraph 4?
A.disappointedB.surprisedC.confusedD.tired
4. What’s the author’ attitude towards this trend?
A.UninterestedB.SupportiveC.ConcernedD.Doubtful

8 . For students feeling the pinch from the pandemic, how to fund academic efforts has been a tough nut to crack—but an Indonesian college has a refreshing new idea.

A hospitality college in Bali, Indonesia, has begun accepting coconuts as payment when students face economic hardship as a result of the coronavirus disease.

When students at the Venus Tourism Academy pay their fees with coconuts, the college will use them to harvest natural coconut oil, UPI reported.

Alternatively, students can pay using leaves from moringa and gotu kola plants, which can be transformed into herbal soap and sold to raise money for the academy, Food & Wine added.

The program has been running since March, after the college received a permit to allow it to operate on this basis, according to The Bali Sun.

Venus Tourism Academy’s director, Wayan PasekAdi Putra, told local news outlet Balipuspa News: “Initially, the students who face economic hardship can pay for their fees by divided payments in three times, with the first installment at 50%, the second 20%, and the third 30%. Because of this Covid pandemic, we have adapted a flexible policy. We produce coconut oil, so students can pay their tuition by bringing coconuts.”

He added: “We have to educate them to optimize the natural resources in their surroundings. When the pandemic is over, they will enter the world of hospitality with different skills.”

Students staying in areas with the highest numbers of COVID-19 cases are not allowed to attend lectures in person. Those from less-affected areas are divided into three groups and must take their classes by turns, according to Food & Wine.

10 . Throwing away unwanted food has become a big issue in the developed world. While some of us do this, people in other parts of world are short of food. It's a shocking fact that a third of the world's food is wasted each year and that the actual figure is 1.3 billion tons of food, which is enough to feed a billion hungry people.

You may think supermarkets are the main contributors to this mountain of food. After all, they do threw away food that's past its sell-by-date and they often refuse to sell vegetables or fruit that are the wrong shape or look damaged. They've also been criticized (批评) for encouraging customers to buy more than they need through promotions (促销) such as “buy one get one free”.

But the biggest responsible person for creating food waste is us. In Europe an incredible 53%of food waste comes from familes, which results in 88 million tons of food waste a year. So instead of filling our stomachs, our food is filling up landfill sites. Unfortunately this causes greenhouse gases which finally leads to global warming and climate change.

In Denmark, a woman called Selina Juul has been working hard to stop this problem. She moved from Russia many years ago and was amazed to see so much food in the supermarkets. But to her surprise, she found that people were buying more than they needed and throwing too much away.

She persuaded some supermarkets to stop selling their items in large amount so that people bought only what they needed. She produced a leftovers (剩菜) cookbook and she's now set up an education programme in schools. This has helped reduce by 25%in food waste, which shows that something can be done.

Clearly, we need to think twice when we put something in our shopping cart, and when we're at home we should make the most of the food we have—using recipes that use up our leftovers or even sharing them with our friends and neighbours.

1. What's the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To lead in the topic that will be discussed.
B.To get the answer to how much food you buy each week.
C.To show people are fond of going shopping which waste much food.
D.To make a good relation with the readers.
2. When facing many people going hungry, the author feels shocked because _______.
A.there is no enough food for the whole world.
B.a large amount of food is wasted in the world.
C.supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need.
D.greenhouse gases lead to global warming and climate change.
3. Selina Juul is a woman _______.
A.who cares about the environment very much
B.who talked some supermarkets into stopping selling their items to people
C.who set up a school to educate people not to waste food
D.who tried to share her good experience from dealing with leftovers
4. What can be the title of the text?
A.Making good use of leftovers.
B.Save the food, stop the hunger.
C.Don't buy too much food in the supermarkets.
D.We need to think twice when we go shopping.
