4 . For a long time, comedy has been referred to as a profession for men only. But this has changed in recent years. Many female comics have made themselves outstanding on the stage not by ignoring the issues of gender (性别) inequality, but by bringing them to light.
Yang Li, 28, a stand-up comedy for about three years, focuses on the difficulties females face. For example, recently she bitingly joked about how women are represented in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “In the film, The Avengers, there are six heroes, and only one of them is a woman, whose superpower is the ability to slow down her aging. How exactly can she be designed to save the world by surviving until all the bad guys die?” she said.
Despite getting more important roles, women still face challenges in the comedy industry. “I’ve found that the audience tend to be more judgmental about a female comedian’s appearance,” said Yang Mengqi, an outstanding comic. To avoid unwelcome attention, female comics have to be especially smart in choosing what clothes they wear to perform.
The other challenge is that females are sometimes taken less seriously, despite plenty of evidence of their talent and dedication in the field with males in the majority. Maple Zuo is a comic who performs in both English and Mandarin. “It’s hard to fit in when I’m the only female comedian at a show.” said Zuo, who has toured internationally. “Every time there’s a comedy scene party, they are naturally divided up into two groups: one for the male comics, the other for their girlfriends, she said. “I always end up hanging out with the girlfriends.”
Even so, many Chinese female comics feel optimistic about their future. Yang said, “When people ask what has motivated me to stick with stand-up comedy, my response is simple: I hope to use whatever influence I have to improve gender equality.”

6 . The beginning of the 21st century is an era when the human mind has developed into a split screen, with one eye on real space and the other staring at the electronic mirror.
Modern technology has changed the path of time. This morning on a crowded bus I saw people texting, talking over the cell phone, checking e-mail, listening to iPods etc. Digital medium has taken over in the form of blogs. Private lives are increasingly translated into public space. The younger generation has embraced a more transparent lifestyle than older generations, and seems to have a different idea of privacy.
A woman writer like me cannot imagine a day without computers. I no longer write my articles with pens and paper. Instead, I simply write down ideas using the edit functions. The computer helps me correct the spelling and grammar in my writings if any. What a great advantage it is! Skype, chat, and call facilities keep me in touch with friends the world over and it feels like they’re living next door. There of course is the withdrawal (脱瘾期) symptom if I am unable to access my cell phone even for a short while.
A youngster today would prefer downloading books from the net rather than buying them in bookshops. Besides, I see Karishma, a home maker, often checking websites to find resale of apartments in the area of her choice. Her son Arjun is not interested in playing cricket (板球) with his friends on the playground but on his portable play station. Karishma talks about the transformation taking place during her generation. Earlier, she looked forward to watching movies together on the movie channel. “But these days children prefer to enjoy themselves with their numerous electronic goods,” Karishma comments sadly.
The bad side of modern technology is increased loneliness, loss in the number of jobs, and increased dependency on devices leading to reduction in competency and creativity.

9 . ’Instead of corona virus, the hunger will kill us.’ A global food crisis appears.
In the largest slum(贫民窟) in Kenya’s capital, people desperate to eat cause chaos during a recent giveaway of flour and cooking oil, leaving scores injured and two people dead.
In India, thousands of workers are lining up twice a day for bread and fried vegetables to keep hunger away.
The corona virus pandemic has brought hunger to millions of people around the world. An estimated 265 million people could be pushed to the edge of starvation by year’s end. “We’ve never seen anything like this before,” said Arif Husain, chief economist at the World Food Program, a U.N. agency. “It wasn’t a pretty picture to begin with, and this makes it probably worse.”
The world has experienced severe hunger crises before, but those were regional and caused by one factor or another — extreme weather, economic downturns, wars or political instability. This hunger crisis, experts say, is global and caused by a variety of factors linked to the corona virus pandemic and the following interruption of the economic order.
There is no shortage of food globally, or mass starvation from the pandemic — yet. But problems in planting, harvesting and transporting food will leave poor countries exposed in the coming months, especially those dependent on imports, said Johan Swinnen, director general of the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington.
To lessen the impact of this crisis, some governments are fixing prices on food items, delivering free food and carrying out plans to send money transfers to the poorest households. Yet, communities across the world are also taking matters into their own hands. Some are raising money through crowdfunding platforms, while others have begun programs to purchase meals for needy families.

10 . Cyberbullying (网络霸凌) was already a problem before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. After the outbreak of the pandemic, lockdown and work-from-home orders were put into force, meaning people were having to spend even more of their time online.
Previously, more time online had been linked to an increased chance of a person participating in cyberbullying. Studies have shown that stress and anxiety have increased during the pandemic, both of which can lead to increases in the number of interactions that involve cyberbullying. Yet this phenomenon has actually decreased during the pandemic. The reason behind this could tell us how to better deal with this problem once we finally emerge from the pandemic.
One reason for the decline is that in-person interactions can fuel both online and in-person bullying. Bullying tends to start in free time, which doesn’t exist in the same way in online schooling. This suggests that if we focus prevention efforts on free time, it is likely that we will be able to stop both traditional forms of bullying, as well as that of cyberbullying.
Bullying rates aren’t fixed. When children feel nurtured and socially and emotionally safe, they bully less. During the pandemic, young people have been spending more time at home with their parents or carers. For some, this has probably provided feelings of safety — a positive effect well known to occur in times of disaster or crisis.
Positive relationships can also help reduce bullying. While it is undoubtedly true that some families have experienced interpersonal conflicts during the crisis, most households have been reporting positive increases in their feelings of unity and bonding among their family members. Studies have shown that children reported more positive feelings when asked about having to spend more time with their families. Keeping these positive relationships strong may also help prevent bullying in the future.
