文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。讲述了乌得勒支(Utrecht)是怎样变成一个自行车友好城市的。

1 . Some of the most well-known bicycle friendly cities in the world are the ones going car-free like Copenhagen and Amsterdam but a lesser known city, Utrecht, the fourth largest city in the Netherlands, seems to be winning the competition hands down.

Today, with an average daily number of bike tips standing at 125,00 the city is doing something very right. A new short film by Streetfilms shows how this city of 360,000 — with 22.5 billion bicycles — transformed itself into a cyclist’s paradise.

Utrecht is made up of a historic city center, and bike paths and roads weave through the downtown making it really easy to commute to work or school without ever using a car. That’s because the city built specialized roads and bike parking facilities to give bicycle riders the upper hand over cars. According to CityLab, cars make up only 15 percent of the trips into the downtown area. Sixty percent are done by cyclists.

But the city wasn’t always this bicycle friendly. In the 1950s and 60s, cities in the Netherlands were as cities in the rest of Europe and the US. In the 1970s, in response to a rise in the number of pedestrians getting killed in traffic accidents, people started protesting against the use of the streets being priortized for cars. And the high cost of gasoline and the environmental movement added to conditions for change.

The transition didn’t come cheap. According to the New York Times, the city spends over €49 million annually to build, improve and maintain the bike-based transportation network which the city plans on doubling by 2030.

There are complaints by car owners that they are being discriminated against. “These are just growing pains.” Lott van Hooijdonk, the city’s mayor, said in the film, “The advantages of the changes far outnumber the disadvantages and include reduced air pollution, lower healthcare costs and a host of other social benefits. In Utrecht, two wheels are so much better than four.”

B.It’s hard to park cars in the city center.

A.The high cost of fossil fuels.B.The rising deaths from vehicles.
C.The poor transportation system.D.The complaints from car owners.
4. How did the city’s mayor make his point?
A.By protesting.B.By persuading.
C.By giving an example.D.By making suggestions.

5 . Buy land, advised Mark Twain; they're not making it any more. In fact, land is not really scarce: the entire population of America could fit into Texas with more than an acre for each household to enjoy. What drives prices rocket is a collision between uncontrolled demand and limited supply in the great metropolises like London, Mumbai and New York. In the past ten years real prices in Hong Kong have risen by 150%. Residential(住宅的)property in Mayfair, in central London, can go for as much as £55,000($82,000)per square metre. A square mile of Manhattan residential property costs $16.5 billion.

Even in these great cities the scarcity is artificial. Regulatory limits on the height and density(密度)of buildings constrain(限制)supply and increase prices. A recent analysis by academics at the London School of Economics estimates that land-use regulations in the West End of London inflate the price of office space by about 800%; in Milan and Paris the rules push up prices by around 300%. Most of the enormous value captured by landowners exists because it is almost impossible to build new offices to compete those profits away.

The costs of this misfiring property market are huge, mainly because of their effects on individuals. High housing prices force workers towards cheaper but less productive places. According to one study, employment in the Bay Area around San Francisco would be about five times larger than it is but for tight limits on construction. Add up these costs in lost earnings and unrealized human potential, and the figures become dizzying. Lifting all the barriers to urban growth in America could raise the country's GDP by between 6.5% and 13.5%, or by about 1 trillion—2 trillion. It is difficult to think of many other policies that would produce anything like that.

1. Why does the author refer to Mark Twain?
A.To persuade people to buy land.
B.To present the topic.
C.To emphasize his influence on city development.
D.To arise readers5 interest.
2. What could be the main reason of the rising prices of land?
A.Regulatory limits.B.Economic crisis.
C.Supply-demand imbalance.D.Population growth.
3. What does paragraph 2 intend to tell us?
A.Housing prices in big cities are increasing.
B.Enormous value of land is mainly captured by the minority.
C.It’s possible to construct many new offices to share the profits.
D.The fact that land is scarce in big cities is made by regulatory policies.
4. What’s the author’s attitude towards tight limits on construction?
A.Ambiguous.B.Critical.C.Favourable.D.Tolerant.

I’m worried that you’ve been addicted to share pictures in WeChat circle recently. You even share all sort of photos in your daily life. Of course, WeChat makes better to understand each other and makes our life more colorful, which is very convenient for us to communicate with. However, there exist some potential trouble if we overshare. One serious problem is leaking privacy, that may cause a lot of trouble. Besides, oversharing can make others uncomfortably, for they think you are showing off.

Thus, neither should we post our personal information, or should we blindly add strangers to a list of friends. It’s much wise to set aside some time to accompany parents or do something more meaningful, such as reading books or taking exercise.

7 . We’re frequently told that our attention problem-being easily distracted-result from modern technology. If we truly want to focus, according to the popular belief, we need to turn off all our digital devices and quit social media.

Here’s my opinion about that idea. This era(时代)is no different than any other-there has always been a “crisis of attention”. Think about life long ago: people in ancient India or Europe didn’t have smartphones and social media, but they were faced with the same problem.

A crisis of attention can happen anytime you don’t allow yourself a break-when you don’t allow your mind to daydream, which may inspire your creativity. We are always engaged in something. With these digital tools at our fingertips, we have constant access to all these forms of communication, content, and interaction, and we don’t let our thoughts wander(漫游)freely. When was the last time you stood in line at a store and just…looked around? Thought about whatever came to your mind? Or did you pull out your phone, check your texts, read your email during that time?

We all do it. We catch ourselves all the time going from one type of mental engagement to the next. Like surfing online (clicking from link to link), we go from one task to the next and the next. We are “all task and no downtime”. Even something you might think of as relaxing is more engagement. Checking your phone messages may seem “fun”, but it’s just another task for your attention. Your attention is focused on task after task after task, without a moment for the mind to wander freely.

It’s not always realistic to unplug. We can’t just turn off our phones and pause our email. We can’t create a distraction-free world. The problem is not the existence(存在)of modern technology; rather, it’s how we’re using it.

1. Why does the author mention people in ancient India?
A.To argue against the popular belief.
B.To discuss the benefits of technology.
C.To suggest a solution to the attention problem.
D.To show the seriousness of the attention problem.
2. Which is an example of “downtime” according to the author?
A.Chatting with friends.B.Reading a newspaper.
C.Sitting back doing nothing.D.Checking phone messages.
3. What does the underlined word “unplug” mean in the last paragraph?
A.Work long hours.B.Improve technology.
C.Stop using digital devices.D.Balance work and leisure.
4. Which section of a website is the text most likely from?
A.Culture.B.Fashion.
C.History.D.Opinion.

8 . Giving children music lessons won’t just introduce them to music―it could also greatly improve their language skills.

While many studies have shown that learning an instrument can affect things like the language ability, it isn’t understood if this is a side effect of a general improvement of cognitive (认知的) skills, or something that directly affects language processing.

Now, we are getting closer to an answer, thanks to a study of 74 Chinese kindergarten children, led by Robert Desimone from MIT. For the study, Desimone’s team chose children from the Chinese education system, with the support of education officials who wanted to see how it might improve their learning.

The 4-to-5-year-old Mandarin-speaking children in the study were divided into three groups. One group received a 45-minute piano lesson three times a week, while another received extra reading instruction classes. The third group acted as controls, taking no extra lessons beyond their usual classes.

The classes lasted for six months, after which the children were tested on their ability to tell words based on differences in tones, consonants (辅音), or vowels (元音). The test results showed that the children who had taken piano lessons performed better at telling the difference between words that differ by a single consonant, when compared with the children who took extra reading lessons. Compared to the control group, both the music learners and the extra reading group did better in telling the difference between words based on vowel differences.

“It looks like for recognising differences between sounds, including speech sounds, it’s better than extra reading. That means schools could pay more attention to music,” Desimone says. “It’s not worse than giving extra reading to the children, which is probably what many schools are trying to do―get rid of the art education and just have more reading.”

1. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Learning a musical instrument.
B.A study of children’s schooling.
C.The Chinese education system.
D.Improvement of cognitive skills.
2. What did the third group learn in the study?
A.Ways to improve their study.
B.Three extra piano lessons a week.
C.Extra lessons about reading tips.
D.Nothing except their usual studies.
3. What conclusion did researchers draw at last?
A.Learning music improved learners’ memory.
B.Children taking piano lessons didn’t perform well.
C.The extra reading group were good at telling vowels.
D.The piano turned out to be better than other instruments.
4. What can we learn from what Desimone says?
A.Children who learn music perform better at school.
B.It isn’t wise to cut back on music lessons.
C.Schools will increase reading classes.
D.Many schools value art education.

9 . It’s important for children to take part in social activities during their summer holidays. “Kids should have a break during the summer. They’ve worked hard during the school year and this is their time to relax, but they should continue communicating with their friends and meeting new people,” said Dr. Jin Han. He’s a professor at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Spending time with friends and meeting new people by doing fun and educational activities such as music, arts and sports programs in summer help with their development. “If children spend a lot of time alone on their electronic equipment, then they will fail to communicate with others,” Han said. “In today’s world, it’s very easy for kids to stay indoors all day and keep in touch with others, but that is not a good way to connect with others. Face-to-face communication is necessary and important. Parents should restrict the time their children spend on electronic equipment. For example, the time they spend on their phones cannot be more than one hour a day.”

It’s also important for children to spend quality time with their parents and sisters or brothers. “It’s not the length of time, but the quality of time that families spend together that is really valuable,” Han said. “This type of communication is not something that you can get from anywhere else. It doesn’t matter how old the child is, because family bonding (人与人之间的关系) experiences can happen at any time.”

Having children spend time with friends and families doesn’t have to spend money in the wallet, either. For example, going to the neighborhood swimming pool or having a picnic is a great way to spend quality time together.

1. What does Dr. Jin Han think about the summer holidays according to the first paragraph?
A.It is necessary for children to have a rest during summer holidays.
B.Children should relax as much as possible during summer holidays.
C.Making new friends in summer holidays is difficult for children.
D.Children should prepare for schoolwork in summer holidays.
2. What does the underlined word “restrict” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Increase.B.Control.C.Spend.D.Employ.
3. What can we infer from children spending time with families?
A.How long children spend with families matters.
B.What to do with families depends on the parents.
C.When to spend time with families makes a difference.
D.How to enjoy the time with families is of great importance.
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.The importance of friends and families.B.The introduction of some social activities.
C.The suitable ways to spend summer holidays.D.The necessity of face-to-face communication.
