1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I lost all my hair at age 2 due to alopecia (脱发). Though all I can do was fit in when growing up, I would look at all the beautiful girls I was surrounded by at schools and in the media and think if I had hair, I would be beautiful, too.

I wore a wig (假发) and was often laughed at for it. They called me “bald (光秃的)”. I had no choice but just to let them laugh at me, because I know it was the fact. I felt like I deserved it, as if losing my hair was somehow my fault.

When I came to the senior high school, I still wasn’t okay with my alopecia and avoided talking about it. I was expecting a huge change, and I extremely wanted to be like everyone else. I kept my alopecia a secret and was fearful of telling anyone about it.

I remembered one day I built up the courage to tell a girl about my alopecia. Hesitating for a long time, I finally stammered (结结巴巴地说), “I have no hair because of alopecia.” She was shocked because I hid it so well. “I can’t have a date with someone who doesn’t have hair,” she said in a low voice. Disappointed and heart-broken, I turned around and walked away. From then on, I shut down, never wanting to let anyone know my alopecia again. I continued to wear my wig no matter what the weather was and what I was doing. It was my security and way to hide from the world.

Sports became my escape, though. I was fortunate to have inborn athletic ability. I would race home and play basketball for hours every day. I would pretend to make the game-winning shot when I was playing. I had big dreams. I did not think about my alopecia during these moments, but think who I wanted to become and what I wanted to accomplish.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述的一位女士收到了来自于陌生人的随机善举,给她的母亲捐赠了1000美元的故事。

3 . On an autumn day, a stranger rang a woman’s doorbell. The woman looked through the peephole (窥视孔) and saw a man. At first, she thought it was a salesman who might go away. When he didn’t, she decided to answer and see what he wanted.

The man asked if a woman named Karen lived at the address. The woman answered that Karen was her mother, but she wasn’t home now. The man smiled, handed an envelope over and then walked away. When the woman saw the contents of the envelope, she was shocked. She then rushed out of the apartment to run after the man, but the stranger was gone.

Inside the envelope was $1,000 in cash and a letter explaining where the money was from. “Please accept this gift. Our late mother devoted much of her time and resources to helping people through Random (随机的) Acts of Kindness program. One way our family honors her is to keep the tradition with acts of random kindness. Although we do not know you personally, other members of our community identified you as a deserving recipient of this gift. Please use this money in any way you see fit.”

Random Acts of Kindness does not have to involve the giving of money. It can be as simple as sharing your time with someone lending an ear, or offering a compliment (赞美). The most important part is that the act is done with no expectation of anything in return.

It turned out that Karen had been battling cancer for three years. The illness left her financially struggling and this amount of money would really help her. We truly never know what someone is going through and how much a random act of kindness might help turn their life around. Surely, $1,000 won’t necessarily meet her need, but it can go a very long way in changing someone’s luck and setting them on a better path.

1. Why did the man come to the woman’s home?
A.To donate money to Karen with cancer.
B.To find out the real situation of Karen.
C.To ask for the address of a patient he was to help.
D.To invite Karen to join Random Acts of Kindness.
2. How did the man’s family honor his mother?
A.By appealing to more people to help others.
B.By continuing to offer help to those in need.
C.By starting Random Acts of Kindness program.
D.By raising funds for Random Acts of Kindness.
3. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about Random Acts of Kindness?
A.The return it expects.B.The way to join it.
C.How it begins.D.How it functions.
4. What does the last paragraph intend to convey?
A.No pains, no gains.B.Love me, love my dog.
C.More love, more hope.D.Faith can move mountains.

It is hard not to desire victory with all your efforts when the world seems so competitive, especially if you’re a boy growing up with those values. A boy called Edward grew up in a similar environment where winning was all that was valued, and he longed to succeed. He was good at running, so he called everyone in the nearby villages for a race. A large group of people from around came to see this exciting event!

Edward had been training hard for this race. He ran among the strongest boys from around the villages, and the young boy came out victorious! The crowd went wild with excitement as they cheerfully held banners (横幅) praising him. The boy loved the attention. It made him feel happy and energetic.

There were two types of races-short distances and long distances. The boy was unbeatable in both the races he competed in. The crowd loved him even more after the second victory; they clapped with excitement. The boy felt very proud of his achievements.

But among the crowd was a wise older man who did not seem as impressed with the boy’s performances as the rest. Just as the boy thought the races for the day were over, the old man shouted from the crowd, “There is one more race left, the most important one.” The boy was surprised by the additional race, but he was, confident he could win any race.

The old man brought two new competitors for the boy, a blind man and a weak old lady. “What type of race is this? I can easily win them,” the boy said. “The most important one,” repeated the old man. So, the boy ran the race as he knew he would win this time, too. When the boy crossed the finish line, the blind man was still at the start, and the old lady had just started to move. The boy was successful, and he raised his hands with great joy after his victory.

Jack sat by the radio at exactly five minutes before seven o’clock. This was a part of his daily routine he never broke. The old man sighed, turned the radio on, and tuned it to a specific frequency. He wanted to contact his best friend, Gerry. With the noise in the house, his step-son (继子) always had an argument with him.

When his wife passed away, Jack’s step-son, David, wanted to persuade a doctor that he was crazy and had dementia (老年痴呆). So, he could get his power of lawyer and then send Jack to a nursing home.

Phillip didn’t understand why Dad wanted Grandpa to leave his home. The next day, Phillip decided to find out what was happening with Grandpa. Phillip bit his lip and moved closer to ask the most important question: “Where is Gerry now?” Grandpa frowned, “It’s been forty-five years, and I still haven’t heard from him, but I haven’t given up hope either. I know my friend will contact me one day by radio at a specific frequency. ” Phillip nodded. He felt that Grandpa was telling the truth.

After listening to Grandpa’s stories about his friend Gerry, Phillip returned home feeling better about Grandpa’s health. However, that evening, Phillip suddenly heard that the doctor would arrive a few minutes before seven o’clock. This time, he realized he needed to take action.

At about seven o’clock, the doctor and David peered into the sitting room and watched Jack sit down and turn on the radio. The static (电流声) was loud enough to hear in their hiding spot. The doctor turned to David. “It seems you’re right about your step-father’s state of mind,” he said.

My first major failure came when I landed my dream job at a famous company. However, after just a few months, I was let go due to budget cuts. I was shocked and felt like all of my hard work had been for nothing.

Determined to bounce back, I applied for a new job at another company. This time, things seemed to be going better. I was making progress and gaining valuable experience, but then I was suddenly laid off again due to company restructuring.

Feeling defeated and hopeless, I decided to take a break from the job search and focus on self-improvement. I enrolled in courses and attended workshops to learn new skills and expand my knowledge. But even with all of this effort, I still couldn’t find the right job.

One day, while searching online job listings, I found an opportunity that seemed too good to be true. It was a remote position that offered a competitive salary and flexible hours. Without hesitation, I applied and was thrilled when I received an offer letter.

Despite these challenges, I refused to give up. I reached out to my colleagues and tried to build relationships with them through virtual meetings and social media. With their help and encouragement, I was able to adapt to the new environment and excel in my role. Looking back on my journey, I realized that success is not about avoiding failure, but rather about learning from it and persevering through the tough times.
