Last Friday, as I was getting home from school, I heard of the music of a garbage truck in my neighborhood. My mother once reminded me to taking out the garbage when the truck came. Known that the truck would leave soon, I hurried home, picked up the garbage bag, and ran out. Fortunate, I caught the truck but managed to throw the bag into it. To my surprised, however, I threw away my school bag instead. I decided to run after the truck but fail to catch it. Then I had to make the phone call to the Environmental Department. The next day, a man sent to help me to get my bag back. After about two hours, we found them at last.

4 . It was 3:12 a. m. when nine-year-old Glenn Kreamer awoke to the smell of burning. Except for the cracking of flames somewhere below there was not a sound in the two-story house at Baldwin, Long Island. With his father away on night duty at a local factory, Glenn was worried about the safety of his mother, his sister Karen, 14 and his 12-year-old brother Todd. He ran downstairs through the smoke-filled house to push and pull Karen and Todd until they sat up. Then he helped each one through the house to the safety of the garden. There, his sister and brother, taking short and quick breaths and coughing, collapsed on the lawn.
The nine-year-old boy raced back into the house and dashed upstairs to his mother's room. He found it impossible to wake her up. Mrs. Kreamer, a victim of the smoke, was unconscious, and there was nobody to help Glenn carry her to the garden. But the boy remained calm and, as a fireman said later, “acted with all the self control of a trained adult. ”
On the bedroom telephone, luckily still working, Glenn called his father and, leaving Mr. Kreamer to telephone the fire brigade and ambulance service, then got on with the task of saving his mother.
First he filled a bucket with water from the bathroom and threw water over his mother and her bed. Then, with a wet cloth around his head he went back to the garden.
He could hear the fire engine coming up, but how would the firemen find his mother in the smokefilled house where flames had almost swallowed up the ground floor?
Grasping firmly a ball of string from the garage, Glenn raced back into the house and dashed upstairs to his mother's room. Tying one end of the string to her hand he ran back, laying out the string as he went, through the hall and back out into the garden.
Minutes later he was telling fire chief John Coughlan, “The string will lead you to Mother. ” Mrs. Kreamer was carried to safety as the flames were breaking through her bedroom floor.

6 . Devon Gallagher, a college graduate from Philadelphia, wants the world to know exactly where she’s been during her worldwide vacation in a special way.
The traveler, who was born with a bone disease, had her right leg amputated (截肢) at the age of four. Although the amputation caused setbacks for Gallagher early on, she now sees it as inspiration for living her best life.
To spread that message, Gallagher has taken to social media, where she shares photos of her travels across the globe. Besides, she writes her location across her artificial leg before taking a picture.
Now she has been taking pictures across the Continent, which show her cycling over the canal in Amsterdam, relaxing on a wall overlooking the city of Barcelona, posing with a waffle (华夫饼) in Brussels, taking spectacular pictures in Athens and enjoying a river cruise in Budapest, with all the well-known locations written on her artificial leg.
“I get a new leg every two years and I can choose the design on it. One day I had a sudden thought to get a chalk-board,” Gallagher said. “My mum and grandmother weren’t too keen on the idea, but my friends thought it was great and told me to go for it, so I did.”
Gallagher said people often stare when she’s writing on her leg, but once she shares the photos, she receives only positive feedback. My leg hasn’t stopped me from doing anything I’ve wanted to do,” she said, “I don’t know if it’s my determination to prove to myself that I can do it. Bur regardless, I’ve been able to keep up with my peers and lead a pretty great life.”
Gallagher shows us that you should never let anything stand in the way of your dreams. And if life gives you an artificial leg, make art.

7 . Around the World in 80 Days! —By Jules Verne
"We set out for Dover and Calais in ten minutes," Fogg announced. A puzzled grin appeared in Passepartout's round face: clearly he had not understood. "Monsieur is going to leave home?" "Yes," replied Phileas Fogg. "We are going around the world." Passepartout's eyes widened, he raised his eyebrows, held up his hands and seemed about to collapse. "Round the world!" he murmured. "In eighty days," responded Mr. Fogg. "So we don't have a moment to lose," "But the cases?" gasped Passepartout. "We won't have any cases," Fogg replied. "Only a bag with two shirts and three pairs of stockings for me in it, and the same for you. We'll buy our clothes on the way. Bring down my raincoat and traveling cloak, and some strong shoes, although we will do little walking. Hurry up!"
Passepartout tried to reply, but he could not. He mechanically began to make the preparations for departure. Around the world in eighty days! Was his master a fool? No. Was this a joke, then? They were going to Dover; good! To Calais; good again! After all, Passepartout, who had been away from France for five years, wouldn't be sorry to set foot in his own country again. Perhaps they would go as far as Paris, and it would do his eyes good to see Paris once again.
By eight o'clock Passepartout had packed the bag. Then, still feeling troubled, he went down to see
Mr. Fogg. Mr. Fogg was completely ready. Under his arm was a book containing timetables showing the arrival and departure of steam boats and trains. He took the bag, opened it, and slipped into it a roll of notes. "You haven't forgotten anything?" Fogg asked. "Nothing, monsieur." "My raincoat and cloak?" "Here they are." "Good!"
"Take this bag," Fogg said, handing it to Passepartout. "Take good care of it because there are twenty thousand pounds in it." Passepartout nearly dropped the bag, as if the twenty thousand pounds were in gold, and weighed him down. Passepartout and his master then left the house and at the end of Saville Row they took a taxi and drove rapidly to Charing Cross.

From her lifeguard station at the end of the pool, Jessica noticed clouds forming in the sky. By the time she took a break at 2:30, the wind was picking up and the sky was darkening. The pool manager announced over the loudspeaker that the pool was closing immediately, due to a weather warning. He asked everyone to head to the safety of home before the storm hit.
All of the swimmers had left by 3: 30 except for Jessica's neighbor, eight-year-old Zack Hill. Zack's mother had dropped him off at the pool while she went to work. She had planned to pick him up later, but the storm was coming fast. Jessica decided that she would drop Zack off on her way home. She taped a note for Mrs. Hill on the door of the pool office and headed out.
The minute Jessica and Zack left the parking lot, it was clear that this was no ordinary storm. The wind was very strong, the storm clouds were dark, and the sky had turned a terrible green. The rain hit just as Jessica turned onto her street, Jessica said, “Jack, I'm going to take you to my house. We need to get inside right away, and your house is farther away than mine.”
She pressed the garage-door opener, but nothing happened. The electricity was out. The front door was only a few feet away, but the wind was so strong that Jessica and Zack had to fight their way out of the car and into the house. Jessica held Zack's hand firmly. The door was heavy with the pressure of the wind. Finally, it opened, but it was blown out of Jessica's hand and it hit the side of the house. The window broke into pieces,Jessica picked up Zack and threw the two of them inside; her only thought was to get to a safe place.
