1 . George is in his bedroom. He is playing on his computer again! George plays on his computer every day. But George feels sad. He plays on his computer because he doesn't have any friends. Sometimes he dreams he is playing football with lots of friends, but it never happens.
Today George is playing a computer football game. He is playing against the computer and he is winning. Suddenly the computer speaks to George.
"Hello, George! What game can we play now?"
George is surprised and jumps up from his chair. He can't believe it. Maybe he is dreaming.
George looks at the computer with big eyes. "You can speak!"
"Yes. I can do many amazing things!" Two arms shoot out of the sides of the computer. And then two legs. Suddenly the computer is walking!
"Let's go for a walk to find a friend," says the computer. The computer runs along the road. It goes into the library, where there are lots of computers. There is a boy, Tommy, sitting there, doing his homework.
Tommy looks at the crazy computer.
"What's this?" he cries. "A computer with arms and legs?" George's computer is in the middle of the room. It's getting bigger and bigger.
It is out of control. The lights in the library are flashing on and off. People are running out of the library.
"Quick!" says George. He grabs a stick and hits his computer. There is a loud bang and it explodes into the air and falls to the ground into small pieces.
"He's gone," says Tommy.
Tommy and George leave the library together. Tommy lives in the next street to George. "That's my house," says Tommy. "Do you want to play football in the garden?"
"Yes," says George, smiling. "Who needs computers?"

4 . Jeremy looked across the hot, grassy plain South Africa was a long way from the cool, green countryside of his hometown in Oregon.
“Ready?” Dad asked.
“Yes,” Jeremy answered. They climbed into the old truck. Jeremy seldom spent time with his father, a famous wildlife photographer. The work seemed mostly hot and boring.
As the truck ran across the rough dirt, Dad chatted with their guides, Mkhulu and Bheki. They spoke Zulu, which Jeremy couldn’t understand, though they also spoke English. He watched for animals. “There!” he shouted, pointing. Mkhulu slowed the truck. Jeremy realized he had been pointing at a rock.
As the truck jumped up and down over a ditch, there was a big crash. “Wait!” Jeremy shouted. The door had fallen off. Bheki threw the door into the back of the truck. “Now we can see better,” Dad laughed.
They stopped near a watering hole. Mkhulu said he was friends with the elephants that sometimes gathered here. Maybe they’d see some.
Before long, Jeremy felt vibrations. Elephants! A small group walked towards the water. Dad jumped out of the truck and focused his camera on the largest elephant.
Jeremy spotted a very young elephant walking between two adults. It was tiny, by elephant standards. The two elephants beside the baby kept stopping to wait for it. Jeremy watched as they neared the water. Several larger elephants Jumped in the water.
Jeremy lost sight of the baby. Where was it? Then he saw. It was in water up to its eyes. Its mouth was underwater. It held it its trunk up above the water. The baby was in trouble. “Look!” said Jeremy. The bank was too steep for the baby. It couldn’t climb out of the water. Other elephants tried pushing it, without success.
Jeremy took the loose door from the back of the truck. Mkhulu saw what Jeremy was planning and ran to help. Together they dragged the door down to the water’s edge, Mkhulu calmed the mother elephant, gently explaining that they were bringing a ramp for the baby.
The mother knew Mkhulu and trusted him. She seemed to sense that they meant to help. Jeremy pushed the door onto the bank, angling it so the baby could walk up it to safety. The baby stepped onto the door. Its mother pushed. Three more steps, and they were up. The elephants gathered around the baby, touching it with their trunks.
“Boy, Jeremy,” Dad said. “That is one of the most exciting photo shoots I’ve ever done! I’m glad you came along.”

I always wanted to be great scientist. I had these dreams of discovering a new drug that would save the life of hundreds of people. Unfortunate, I was never very good at chemistry at school and the teacher used to getting very angry with me. After a while, I decided I would become an inventor and designed an only product which would become a household name. My parents were quite encouraged, but told me to be a little more realistic. A few weeks late, I had a clever idea for a pen that would write with upside down. To my disappointment, a friend of me pointed out it was not a new discovery.
7 . In the waters off Brisbane, Australia, a sevenfootlong sand tiger shark swims in pain. A twofootlong spike sticks out of her side. It’s a piece of fishing equipment that the shark ate carelessly. After traveling into her body, the spike punctured(刺) through the shark’s stomach.
A man swimming in the water notices the shark. Then, he warns Sea World Marine Park in the nearby town of Gold Coast. Sea World sends a 12person team from its rescue center to where the shark was discovered in Moreton Bay Marine Park. Soon, they find her lying on the seafloor. “She’ll die without help,”says Trevor Long, leader of the rescue center.
Using an onboard crane(吊车), the rescuers move the shark into their boat’s 13footlong tank(缸). Then Dr. David Blyde gives the shark pain medicine and performs an operation to remove the spike. After that, the team sails with the shark to Sea World 33 miles away. They place the fish in a 49footlong tank and wait to see if she gets better.
To give the shark's stomach time to get better, she isn’t fed for the first few days. A week after her operation, Long offers the shark a small, dead fish. The animal refuses to eat. But days later when he drops another fish into her tank, the shark enjoys her meal. By now the shark’s wounds are getting better.
Two weeks after her rescue, they take the shark back to the boat and return her to Moreton Bay Marine Park. As the fish is lowered by the crane to the water’s surface, two rescuers jump into the ocean and guide her into the sea. From the boat, Long watches her swim away.“The shark has another chance,” Long says.

10 . Grandpa worked as a carpenter(木匠) in downtown Chicago. He loved life—especially when he could play a trick(玩笑) on somebody. At those times, his large body shook with laughter while he pretended(伪装) innocent surprise. But on a cold Saturday, Grandpa felt that God played a trick on him, and Grandpa wasn't laughing.
On this particular day, he was building some boxes for the clothes his church was sending to an orphanage (孤儿院) abroad. On his way home, he reached into his shirt pocket to find his glasses, but they were gone. He remembered putting them there that morning, so he drove back to the church. His search proved fruitless.
Suddenly, he realized what happened. The glasses had slipped out of his pocket unnoticed and fallen into one of the boxes, which he had nailed shut. His brand-new glasses were heading for India!
The Great Depression(经济萧条) was at its height, and Grandpa had six children. He had spent twenty dollars for those glasses that very morning.
“It's not fair,” he told God as he drove home in sadness. “I've been very faithful in giving my time and money to your work, but now this.”
Several months later, the director of the orphanage was on vacation in the United States. He wanted to visit all the churches that supported him, so he came to speak on Sunday night at my grandfather's small church in Chicago. Grandpa and his family sat in their usual seats among the workers in the church.
“But most of all,” he said, “I must thank you for the glasses you sent last year.”
“Even if I had the money, there was simply no way of replacing those glasses. Along with not being able to see well, I experienced headaches every day, so my coworkers and I were much in prayer about this. Then your boxes arrived. When my coworkers removed the covers, they found a pair of glasses lying on the top.” After a long pause, he continued, “Folks, when I tried on the glasses, I was able to see things clearly again. It was as though the glasses had been custom-made just for me! I want to thank you for being a part of that!”
The people working for the church listened, happy for the amazing glasses, but they thought the director surely must have confused(混淆) their church with another; they knew that there were no glasses on their list of items donated(捐赠) overseas.
But sitting quietly in the back, with tears streaming down his face, an ordinary carpenter realized God had used him in an unusual way.
