Once I bought a few books to read in my free time during the summer vacation at high school. One evening during the vacation, two of my friends visited my home. After having some small talk, one of them started looking at my library that I had built since my childhood. He picked up one of the books that I had just started reading in the morning. It was Thomas, one of my best friends in high school. I helped him a lot with his mathematics for the exam before the summer vacation.
The disagreement with him began when he wanted to take the book home. The book named An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser was his first choice. I tried to make him realize that I had just started reading it before they arrived at my home and had just finished one-fourth of the book. But it seemed that he was also crazy about the book. He was determined to take it. Samuel, the other friend of mine sat quietly and saw us argue with each other.
The argument continued for about 15 minutes, and I tried to ask him to take some other books. He looked sad, saying that after he started reading the story, he really didn’t want to miss the chance to complete the book. Finally, I gave up and let him take the book on one condition: he should return the book just after he finished reading it and also would not lend it to someone else (he had lost most of his books lending them to others) as he did earlier with my books.

It was exam time at Marc’s school. Every day, their teachers gave them loads of homework and told them the test was very important and that they ought to spare no effort to perform well in it. Marc was amazed. “You’d rather do math than play football?”
“Math is important. Besides, my mum says she will buy me a mountain bike if I do well in the math exam.”

I wondered then about this man, who thought about the spider with such kindness... Where and when did I lose my empathy towards the unfamiliar? Now, when faced with a row of ants on the staircase, my first reaction is no longer to attack them. The ants were already wise, but thanks to Jack, I learnt to live with the not so beautiful bits of nature.

You broke a child’s heart.” Timothy’s father shared what that belt meant to his son, “Timothy would not go anywhere without that belt… Most kids have balls, while he had a belt.” All hope was lost.
Then something unexpected happened. “I saw two women appeared at the gate. They put down the bag there. My guard went over and I realized what was happening. That bag contained the stolen wrestling belt,” Sergio said. The two women apologized to Sergio. They said that they were thrown out of a friend’s apartment after the friend saw the news report of the theft on TV. In fact, they were trying to kick a drug habit. They cried with guilt and shame.

I find that it’s pretty hard to love people you don’t even know. And sometimes, we all, myself included, use that as an excuse not to try. I read Brendan’s story recently and was moved.
One day, Brendan, a young man in New York was on the way back to his Brooklyn apartment when a homeless woman called Jackie asked him for money. He said that he had no money. By the end of the week, she asked two more times, and each time he answered “No”. The woman looked sad, so Brendan said, “I am on my way to a job interview. If I get the job, I’ll take you out for lunch.”
Brendan got the job. He took Jackie out for lunch. That was when their friendship began. They built a strong friendship by supporting each other and spending their birthdays, holidays and difficult times together, over a period of eight years. When Brendan’s heater broke, Jackie made a blanket for him. Two days later when he told her that he had lost his job, she left and returned minutes later, bring him food to eat. She continued to do that during the whole winter. Even with so little, she often gave back.
Over these years, Jackie moved from the streets and subway stations into a halfway house, and is now moving into an apartment. To celebrate it, Brendan wanted to do something special for Jackie. He went with her and helped her to pick out everything she would need for her new apartment.
