1 . I had just arrived in this Asian country for a one-year teaching position. One day, I took a subway to visit some ancient palaces and temples in the downtown. What happened to me next on the subway has taught me much about culture difference.
Since all the seats were taken, I stood. Suddenly, I felt someone pulling on my bag. Assuming I probably was in someone’s way, I moved over slightly. But in one quick motion, I felt my bag removed from my back, and in a flash, it was gone. I turned around to see who the thief was. I looked at the people standing behind me, but didn’t see my bag or anyone suspicious. My heart began to beat wildly and I began to panic.
I looked around, only to find directly across from me was an elderly lady, and sitting on her lap was my bag. I tried to get it back from her lap. But as I began to pull it up, she quickly took it back and held onto it. I looked around at the people standing beside me, and those sitting beside her, but no one took any notice of the situation. Trying not to cause a scene, I tried to negotiate through gestures. I used my hands as much as I could, but she ignored my requests for my bag and pointed to my back. She picked up my bag, showing how heavy it was. I finally began to understand. She was holding my bag to help me.
At the next stop, a middle-aged woman got on the crowded subway. Another elderly woman sitting down took her bag, setting it on her lap. They didn’t talk; yet this older woman was more than pleased to sit with this stranger’s bag on her lap throughout her journey.
As the subway pulled into the main downtown station and I was getting ready to get off, the woman gently handed me back my bag. But before I had a chance to thank her, she had disappeared into the crowd.

Years ago, in a small fishing village in Holland, a young boy taught the world about the rewards of unselfish service.
Because the entire village lived on fishing, a volunteer rescue team was needed in case of emergency. One night, the winds screaming, a fishing boat was turned over by a strong storm at sea.The crew(全体船 员) in trouble sent out the S.O.S signals. The captain of the rescue rowboat team sounded the alarm(警报) and the villagers gathered in the town square overlooking the sea. When the team got on their rescue boat and fought their way through the wild waves, the villagers waited nervously on the beach, holding lamps(灯) to light the way back.
An hour later, the rescue boat reappeared through the fog( 雾 ) and the cheering villagers ran to greet them.Falling exhausted(精疲力竭的) on the sand, the volunteers reported that the rescue boat could not hold any more passengers and they had to leave one man behind .Even one more passenger would have surely overturned the rescue boat and all the people on board would have been lost.
Anxiously, the captain called for another volunteer team to look for the survivor .Sixteen-year-old Hans stepped forward . His mother held his arm, crying, “please don't go . Your father died in a shipwreck(船只失事)10 years ago and your elder brother, Paul, has been lost at sea for three weeks.Hans, you are all I have left.”

Twenty years ago, Chase Poust was only 7. On Sunday morning just before the Memorial Day, he, his dad Steven, and his 4-year-old sister, Abigail, were out for a family boating trip on Florida's St. Johns River, which was trackless and almost nobody knew about it. And there's no rescue center nearby. Chase and Abigail were swimming at the back of the anchored boat while Steven was on deck (甲板) fishing.
It was a perfect outing- it was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the deep blue sky, the light green river water and the mild late May sunshine mixed to create a magic scene. Everything was sound until a strong current emerged and loosened Abigail's grasp and she let go of the boat. Instantly realizing his sister would be swept away, Chase let go of the boat as well to try and reach her. At the same time, Chase screamed at his father desperately.
Without thinking twice, Steven jumped into the water and swam towards the two kids with all his efforts. But after realizing he couldn't keep up with both kids, he was faced with a heartbroken decision. He told them he loved them very much because he wasn't sure what's going to happen. Steven tried his best to stick with both of his children. He wore himself out. But his little daughter was washed away from him. Directing Chase to swim to shore for help Steven stayed behind, keeping as close as he could to Abigail as the life-vest that was keeping her above the waves floated further and further from his reach.
It was a tough go for the 7-year-old, but rather than attempting to swim all out, Chase wisely paced himself. Stopping to float or dog paddle when he was tired, he'd rest and then set off again. The current was going the opposite way of going to the boat and the shore, so it was very hard to swim that way for Chase.

6 . After watching the 2002 Winter Olympic Games on TV at 3 years old, Little Nathan Chen became interested in winter sports. Nathan wanted to play ice hockey (冰上曲棍球),but his mom advised him to try figure skating(花样滑冰)first which she said was safer. After practicing a few times, Nathan fell in love with it.
Today, Nathan is influenced by all the athletes he meets. From the difficulties the athletes have faced and how they dealt with them, Nathan learns to work on dealing with his own difficulties as well. He describes all the athletes he trains with as role models for himself.
Nathan won gold at the 2017 ISU Grand Prix Final and 2017 Four Continents Championships, and silver at the 2016 ISU Grand Prix Final. Nathan has also broken a record, becoming the youngest man to win a medal at the 2017 U.S. Figure Skating Championships.
However, this journey has not come without hard times. Nathan suffered a bad injury during the 2016 season and it took him quite a long time to be able to compete again. At the beginning of the 2018 Olympics, Nathan was expected to win gold but got 5th place in the end. Nathan later described the race as “just me being on the ice and enjoying myself”, free from all the pressures. What matters the most isn’t the results, but the great memories you get from the experience and the joy of being able to do something you love.
This fall, Nathan will be attending Yale University and work on managing his time as a student and athlete. Aside from figure skating, Nathan would like to learn how to box. Besides, he plans to learn biology and later become a doctor.

Many years ago, there was a king who often thought, “Nothing good can come to a nation whose people only complain and expect others to solve their problems.” One day, he had an idea. Early one morning, the king disguised(伪装) himself and went to a local village. He placed a large stone in the middle of the main street and hid a diamond under the stone .Then he hid behind a huge maple tree and watched.
The first person down the street was a milkman with his cart. He crashed into the stone, spilling the milk everywhere. “What fool put this stone here?”he shouted. He picked himself up and angrily went away. After a while, a group of women came along, each balancing a pot of water on her head. One woman tripped over the stone and her water pot went crashing to the ground. She picked herself up and walked away in tears. Neither she nor her friends thought about moving the stone out of the road.
The king watched all day as many people complained about the stone, but he found nobody making an attempt to move it. The king was in despair(绝望). “Is there no one in his village who feels any responsibility to keep their neighbours from harm?”
