1 . Lisa Pina never thought she would need the fire safety training she received when she was a student learning painting. On Friday morning, she felt so thankful for having got the training.
On Thursday night, while Pina was looking after her granddaughter, nephew and two nieces in her sister’s apartment, she smelled smoke and realized the apartment building was on fire. When her 4-year-old granddaughter Garcia began saying, “we’re going to die”, she knew she had to act. Pina first closed the door, and then told all four children to lie on the floor. After calling 911, she told the children to start singing and promised them whatever they wanted to have as soon as they reached safety.
“I said, ‘OK, we’re going to lie down and we’re all going to play a game,’” Pina said. “We all started singing our ABCs and 123s. I was just trying to make it fun.”
Pina waited with patience, and a few minutes later, firefighters arrived. Pina and the children were all trapped on the second floor as flames filled the first floor.
Pina did the only thing she could. She opened the window and dropped the children, one by one, into the arms of the firefighters’ about 15-20 feet below.
“I just needed to keep the kids calm so they wouldn’t be frightened,” Pina said. “I was actually afraid inside, but I couldn’t let them know that.”
After the children was saved, firefighters rescued Pina with a ladder. Ten people were sent to hospital for suffering smoke, but nobody was seriously injured or killed.

When Ben was two, Mac gave him a little blue cup that was made in China and ever since the cup has become one of the most important things in Ben’s life. Mac never thought that the little cup would cause such a big problem. Ben became dependent on this cup because ever since he received the gift he would only drink water from the exact type of little blue cup. Over 12 years, Ben refused to drink water without the cup. Mac was worried about this because their current cup could break soon and he needed to find a replacement for his son to drink with. The problem was that the cup was no longer being produced.
Mac tried to take Ben to a doctor to solve the cup problem, but it was of no use. So Mac decided to seek help from the public on Twitter. He got a lot of responses and the enthusiasm people from all over the world showed gave him confidence and hope. Many strangers found their identical cup and offered to send them to Ben. Though Mac received a lot of help, he still was concerned. All the cups he received would eventually break. As time passed, it would be even harder to find the same cups.
The situation took a surprising turn when the baby products company Tommee Tippee UK got in touch with Mac. 5 . An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer of his plans to leave the house building business and live a more leisurely life with his wife enjoying his extended family. He would miss the paycheck, but he needed to retire. They could get by.
The employer was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The carpenter said yes, but in time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He resorted to inferior workmanship and used cheap materials. It was an unfortunate way to end his career.
When the carpenter finished his work, the employer came to inspect the house and handed the front-door key to the carpenter. "This is your house," he said, "my gift to you."
What a shock! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently. Now he had to live in the home he had built none too well.
So it is with us. At important points we do not give the job our best effort. Then with a shock we look at the situation we have created and find that we are now living in the house we have built. If we had realized, we would have done it differently.
Think of yourself as the carpenter. Think about your house. Each day you hammer a nail, place a board, or erect a wall. Build wisely. It is the only life you will ever build. Even if you live it for only one day more, that day deserves to be lived with dignity.

6 . Curtis Fraser was a fashion designer. One afternoon in August, when he reached out to measure some materials, he lost his balance and fell down. The accident left the 55—year—old unable to use his hands and feet. So he had to arrive at the strange London to begin his long recovery period.
Having long had an interest in birds, he discovered Horatio's Garden London & South East before long which belonged to the hospital. Then he visited this garden at least once a day.
Working in the garden helped his hands to function normally. Not only that, he also felt that there was a different feeling when he was in nature. He loved the sweet smell of the flowers and the colors of the plants. It's therapeutic(治愈的).
Fraser was eventually introduced to Ashley Edwards, the head gardener, in September, for one—to—one gardening lessons. “When Curtis first came in, he had very little hand function and was hardly able to hold tools,” says Edwards. “He required a lot of help in the gardening classes but, as each week goes by, I’ve seen a huge improvement in his movements.”
Fraser recalls the first lesson: “It was 80 good. We were chatting away and the time went by so quickly. Soon, I could do things that I didn't think I would ever do again.”
For Fraser, the garden offered relief(减轻) from the painful treatment. “It gave me clear thoughts. In the garden, I'd forget that I was in hospital. I'd come out and think, ‘Oh man, sill here’—but I'd get a good feeling from the garden.” Fraser has been in recovery for seven months and left hospital on March 1.
The new gardener now suggests the garden to fellow patients, who return to tell him about its unique benefits. “That garden helped my recovery so much. Even for a little moment, I'd tell people to visit one. It can clear your mind.”

My sister, who was sitting on a bench suddenly was very still and couldn't talk to me.She couldn't move. Her eyes were rolling and she was about to lose consciousness(知觉). I held her in my arms and asked if she wanted to rest. She didn’t answer and only said“Sorry.”

Suddenly, from nowhere, a woman on a bicycle appeared. wearing a raincoat." She isn't looking good. Do you want me to call an ambulance(救护车)?”“Yes, please, yes!”I begged.
She did. Struggling with the rain, she managed to call some policemen, who quickly helped me carry my sister to a safer place. The ambulance arrived and we went to a hospital where she was treated in time and she came to life the next morning after some rest and medical help.
An interesting fact was that I guessed the woman in the raincoat was a doctor or a nurse. I later learned from one of the police officers who told me: “No.She was an ordinary person who took some courses on emergency situations(紧急情况).”

8 . One morning more than thirty years ago, I entered the Track Kitchen, a restaurant where everyone from the humblest (卑微的) to the most powerful came for breakfast. I noticed an empty chair next to an elderly, unshaven man, who looked somewhat disheveled. He was wearing a worn-out hat and was alone. I asked if I might join him. He agreed quietly and I sat down to have my breakfast.
We cautiously began a conversation and spoke about a wide range of things. We never introduced ourselves. I was concerned that he might have no money and not be able to afford something to eat. So as I rose to go back to the counter and buy a second cup of coffee, I asked,
“May I get you something?”
“A coffee would be nice.”
Then I bought him a cup of coffee. We talked more, and he accepted another cup of coffee, Finally, I rose to leave, wished him well, and headed for the exit. At the door I met one of my friends. He asked,
“How did you get to know Mr. Galbreath?”
“Who?”
“The man you were sitting with. He is chairman of the Board of Churchill Downs.”
I could hardly believe it. I was buying, offering a free breakfast, and feeling pity for one of the world’s richest and most powerful men!

In the Dragon Boat Festival (龙舟节) this year, I invited Mr Smith, my foreign teacher, to my home to spent the festival together. My mother cooked delicious food for us. He even showed Mr Smith what to make zongzi. After dinner, I led him the river to see the dragon boat race. The banks of the river were full of people but a total of 12 dragon boat teams took part. As the game began, so the team members paddled (划桨) quickly. The race was excited.
I explained that the race is in memory of the famous poet Qu Yuan, that threw himself into the river and killing himself. People then paddled hardly in the hope of saving him.
