1 . On July 29, 10-year-old Mayah Zamora went home after being hospitalized for 66 days. Mayah was a survivor of the May 24 shooting rampage at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas.
The little girl had more than 20 surgeries and underwent weeks of physical therapy after being shot in her hands, chest and back during the school shooting. Mayah’s doctors have called her survival miraculous.
On August 24, she was honored as the Hero of the Month for August by MLB’s Houston Astros at a game against the Minnesota Twins, where she threw out the first pitch. While there, Mayah also met former Astros shortstop (游击手) Carlos Correa, who shared some incredible news with her family.
The Zamoras learned during the game that the Correa family Foundation and other donors are funding the construction of a new home for the family in a location they chose. The trauma (创伤) of living just blocks from the gunman’s house had been taking a toll on (给……造成重大损伤) the young survivor.
“I could never begin to imagine everything she has gone through, and we feel that this is one thing we could do to try to alleviate some of her pain,” Correa said. “I’m thankful to both teams for being a part of this effort.”
His foundation shared a statement and some great photos of Mayah’s special night at the ballpark on its Facebook page.
“We are so proud of you. Mayah, and we are honored to recognize you as our Hero of the Month,” wrote the Correa Family Foundation. “We hope this will be an opportunity for Mayah and her family to rebuild their lives, make new memories, and look towards a bright future.”

The little country schoolhouse was heated by an old fashioned, pot-bellied stove. A little boy had the job of coming to school early each day to start the fire and warm the room before his teacher and his classmates arrived.
One morning, they arrived to find the schoolhouse engulfed (吞没) in flames. They dragged the unconscious little boy out of the flaming building more dead than alive. He had major burns over the lower half of his body and was taken to the nearby county hospital.
From his bed the dreadfully burned, semi-conscious little boy faintly heard the doctor talking to his mother. The doctor told his mother that her son would surely die—which was for the best, really—for the terrible fire had devastated (破坏) the lower half of his body.
But the brave boy didn’t want to die. He made up his mind that he would survive. Somehow, to the amazement of the physician, he did survive. When the mortal (致死的) danger was past, he again heard the doctor and his mother speaking quietly. The mother was told that since the fire had destroyed so much flesh in the lower part of his body, it would almost be better if he had died, since he was doomed to be a life-time cripple (瘸子) with no use at all of his lower limbs.
Once more the brave boy made up his mind. He would not be a cripple. He would walk. But unfortunately from the waist down, he had no motor (引起运动的) ability. His thin legs just dangled there, all but lifeless.
Ultimately he was released from the hospital. Every day his mother would massage (对……按摩) his little legs, but there was no feeling, no control, nothing. Yet his determination that he would walk was as strong as ever. When he wasn’t in bed, he was confined (限制) to a wheelchair.
Paragraph 1:One sunny day his mother wheeled him out into the yard to get some fresh air.

4 . When Amanda Lemay heard the story about a baker and his wife who were traveling around the United States in a van, learning from expert bakers, she wanted to do something similar. So she got rid of most of her possessions and made an old ambulance with her dad into a lovely home on wheels.
Lemay’s ambulance is actually a former emergency response vehicle for the US Navy, built on a 2006 Ford E350 Cutaway. Renovations were done by her and her dad. Now the dark blue vehicle has a lot of built-in cabinets on all sides, offering a lot of storage space, while the rooftop has 400-watts of solar power panels and a small roof deck where Lemay practices yoga. The inside is tastefully done to suit Lemay’s work and hobbies.
As Lemay mentions, not only did her father help, but so did the rest of her family. Lemay’s mother helped sew the decorations on the removable cushions, and her sister crafted the leather pulls. It was truly a family affair.
Her current nomadic lifestyle fits well with her work doing audiobooks, voiceovers, and publishing work. In the end, this unexpected path has Lemay rethinking what it means to be truly sustainable, now that van life has gotten her to become minutely aware of the water, electricity, and other daily resources that she uses. But all these day-to-day concerns are balanced with a greater sense of freedom.
“It’s almost mind-blowing, it feels like a completely different life because I’m doing the work online, and I can do things on my own schedule. Pretty much most of my days are mine — so by living in the van, I can be where I want to be, and do the things I want to do, and spend time outside.”

The sound of breaking glass was immediately recognizable. Hearing the sound, I turned around and froze. “Oh, no, not the vase,” Lisa said. “Why? What did I do?” My face turned red. “Abby, that glass vase is our family heirloom (传家宝),” Lisa replied nervously. “If you broke anything else in the apartment, I would gladly say ‘I did it’. But this time you have to tell my mom that it is your fault.” I was afraid and regretful. Why did I have to jump around like that?
We gathered up the pieces. I kept saying maybe it could be fixed but Lisa said gently it didn’t look possible and that her mom would be home soon. Would her mom shout at me or punish me? I couldn’t stop playing those seconds over in my mind. The only thing I could think of to say was “I’m sorry”.
Soon, we heard the key tun in the lock. Her mom was home. We could see she was in a good mood, “Hello! It’s hot today. I want to treat you two to ice cream. Let’s go!” her mom said. “Before that, I need to tell you something.” I said. “We can talk later.” “No, I need to tell you now. It’s important,” I insisted. I could feel my voice shaking. “What is it, dear?” Her mom walked closer to me. I could feel she studied my face thoughtfully. My heart beat faster.
“I’m sorry. I broke your vase by accident. I’ve leaned it is your family heirloom. We have save the pieces, and if it can be fixed, I will pay to fix it. I’m so sorry.” Her mom looked at me expressionless and saying nothing. This scared me even more. Then she let out laughter and hugged me, kissing me on both cheeks. “Oh, thank you! I always hated that ugly vase, but I had to keep it because it was passed down in my family. Now it’s gone! You’ve done me a huge favor!” she said and kissed me again.

10 . The unique pink box in the front yard was originally created to serve those in the community. “Ever since my teaching partner told me about Little Free Libraries, I have known I wanted to make one,” says Carrie, a teacher in Illinois. Little Free Libraries, first created in 2009 are a way for people to take a book to read, or leave one for someone else to find.
Carrie’s husband, Matt, promised to make her one for her birthday in May 2020. In June, she was found to have breast cancer. Designing and planning the Little Free Library became a helpful distraction(分散注意力的事).
The book exchanges are often made on different, creative themes. Carrie always posts her adventures with greyhounds Rose and Flattery, German Shepherd Dog Kuster, and Belgian Shepherd Dog Kiva on the Internet, which make a difference to her life. She decided to create a dog-themed library featuring dog related artwork, a metal dog on top and a jar of dog treats. The library took her husband almost a month to build and another few weeks to paint.
The project has given Carrie something positive to focus on as she goes through her treatments. In addition, it has shown her how many people care about her -from her husband and another relative who helped construct it, to a nephew who painted the artwork, to friends who donated books. She also has a better understanding of them. The Little Free Library holds about 25 books. As people stop by, she discovers another benefit. “After many years of living here, we’re finally getting to know some of our neighbors.”
