4 . Lufinha has crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a small boat powered only by the sun and wind. He used kites to move the boat and solar power to use lights and equipment on the boat. He expects his trip will earn him a Guinness World Record for Fastest Sol o Atlantic Crossing by Kite Boat. He also hopes to help people understand the need to protect the oceans.
The kite-powered boat reached top speeds of over 30 kilometers per hour. Lufinha traveled 6,400 kilometers in 25 days. The 38-year-old set out from Cascais, near Lisbon, Portugal on November 3, 2022, and arrived in Martinique on December 20, Lufinha was not at sea for all that time, however. He made a planned stop at the Canary Islands on November 8. But he had to stay longer than planned because of the powerful storm and he remained there until November 30.
Lufinha made the crossing completely alone in a 7.2-meter-long and 5.6-meter-wide trimaran, a boat which has three long, thin parts, with a small room for sleeping and shelter. Lufinha used a hand pump to produce water for drinking and cooking. He said, “I have two such water makers, which I can pump and every hour I can make around four liters of water.” The water pump has a special filter (过滤器) to remove salt from the sea water. Lufinha used the water to add to dried food he carried with him on the boat.
He called his trip “a big learning experience”. It was a big test of his adaptability. He learned most of all to look at his problems relatively. He had so many problems all of the time, such as kites getting torn and kites exploding. And the only way not to suffer was to think, “It could be worse.” He said his way of thinking during the difficult crossing helped him get through it hour by hour, day by day, week by week until he finished this Atlantic crossing.

How far can a penny go? Right now, one can quickly say that it wouldn’t get you that much. Or, to be more specific, it’s more of a novelty item now than a currency.
But Ryan Trahan, who is an online media content creator, wanted to prove that a penny can turn into something much more valuable and that the spirit of bartering (以物易物) is still alive and well. His goal will surprise anyone.
In his video, he shared that he would turn his penny into a house. Yes, you’ve read that right. He will barter his way to a house.
The challenge started as tough as you’d expect it to be because who would trade anything for a penny? The first thing he got was a pen. Then, he traded off his pen for a small dinosaur toy. Luckily, he met a dinosaur fan who was more than willing enough to trade it for a tin of mints (薄荷糖) —or at least what’s left of it.
It was a dead end from then on until he met two interesting strangers. Apparently, his campaign of “penny-to-a-house” is gaining attention. It gave him a chance to trade the mints for something of value—gas station earphones.
It snowballed from there. After the earphones, the value of his trade just got bigger when he decided to be creative. He called at a local garage sale and traded the earphones for a vintage Polaroid (老式拍立得) camera. He also gave a shirt, just so he wouldn’t feel bad.
However, it wasn’t as easy as he thought. Trahan thought he struck gold and that it was easy to exchange the camera into something much more valuable. After all, who doesn’t love a vintage camera?

9 . Jill Wright’s son, Harry, was a natural performer. From learning dance moves on TV at 18 months to winning a talent contest at seven, his love for the stage was evident early on. His talent led him to be a performer in The Book of Mormon on West End by 20. However, a tragic turn came when Harry was diagnosed with a brain tumor (肿瘤) and, after a brave battle, passed away in 2019, at the age of 25. His death upturned Wright’s life.
This year, at 61, Wright staged a show written by Harry, at St. Paul’s Church in his memory. After working for 40 years as a speech and language therapist (治疗专家) for children with special needs, she has switched careers to become a dresser, a move inspired by Harry’s own suggestions during his lifetime, as Wright made costumes for Harry throughout his childhood. Harry’s death allowed her to reflect and prepare for change.
However, the change wasn’t easy. For months, she sent her CV (简历) to theatres and productions to no avail. Finally, Wright’s persistence paid off when she received a job offer as a dresser for Les Misérables. Embracing her new role, she found joy and comfort in her work, dressing four performers and also providing emotional support. Now Wright works on eight shows over a six-day week and leaves the theatre at about 10: 45 pm after an evening performance, before returning home to Chingford, East London. The hours have given her a new understanding of the demanding life Harry once led.
Wright has experienced loss before. She was 22 when her husband, whom she had married two years earlier, died suddenly from a heart attack. These experiences have shaped her understanding and philosophy of life. “Life’s events and circumstances can pave the way for a new future. Even in our darkest days, there is a light to be found. Happiness and sadness can coexist in our daily lives,” Wright said.
