1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was invited to a cookout on an old friend’s farm in western Washington. I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years. A noise at a window caught my attention, so I entered it. It was a hummingbird (蜂鸟), desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs (蛛网) and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up.

With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was the likely answer. I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me.

When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes. I removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still, she made no attempt to fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired? Or too thirsty?

As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away.

Hovering (悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight.

During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As I was departing, my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, “She must have come to say goodbye.”

Jimmy is an automotive mechanic (汽车修理工), but he lost his job a few months ago. He has a good heart, but he always feared applying for a new job.

One day, he gathered up all his strength and decided to attend a job interview in order to support his family. His appointment was at 10 a.m. and it was already 8:30. While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. Jimmy immediately went up to lend him a hand. When Jimmy finished working on the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Jimmy said there was no need to pay him, that he just helped someone in need, and that he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said. “Well. I could take you to the office for your interview. It’s the least I could do. Please. I insist.” Jimmy agreed.

Upon arrival, Jimmy found a long line of applicants waiting to be interviewed. Jimmy still had some grease (油腻物) on him after the car repair, but he didn’t have much time to wash it off or have a change of shirt. One by one, the applicants left the interviewer’s office with a disappointed look on their faces. Finally his name was called. The interviewer was sitting on a large chair facing the office window. Rocking the chair back and forth, he asked. “Do you really need to be interviewed? Jimmy’s heart sank (低落).” “With the way I look now, how could I possibly pass this interview” He thought to himself.

My best friend Lily and I met in high school. Ever since then, we had spent New Year’s Eve together. We’d watch together on TV the New Year celebration in Times Square, a the world-renowned tradition for millions to welcome the new year. Every year,   thousands of people will gather in Times Square New York in person on New Year’s Eve counting down to the new year, with celebrations and performances after midnight. And we’d always say that one day we should go there ourselves.

Then we both went to college. Struggling through exams and schoolwork, we had little time to meet up. We missed each other terribly and decided it was time: to finally go to New York ourselves, to be present at the New Year’s celebration, and to do something fun together.

We worked out our schedule, bought tickets for everything and, most importantly, planned how to survive the long hours of waiting in the biting cold before the celebration — we wanted the best spot possible, and there’s only so much space, so we had no choice but to get to the Time Square early.

When the big day finally arrived, it became snowy and colder than any cold we had ever experienced. Actually it was one of the coldest New Year’s Eves on record. Everyone thought we were going to back out.

But we didn’t. We didn’t make it that far to back out.

We woke up and set off early. And, of course, we did freeze along the way, but we kept cheering each other up. Once we got there, we found our way to the line pretty quickly, considering everyone else was pushing their way in the same direction. We got in line and waited to finally get into our area in the Time Square, which thankfully was pretty spacious and close to the stage.

Halfway through the day, my friend and I couldn’t feel our toes.

There were only two tickets to the big basketball game. All three of us paid our attention to the tickets in Dad’s hand. Marcus, the oldest, asked the question running through everyone’s mind. “Only two tickets? But Dad, which of us gets to go with you?”

“Yeah, Daddy, who gets to go?” repeated Caleb, the youngest. “Dad, can’t you get any more tickets?” I asked. I was the in -between sister, but I also wanted to go out with Dad. “I’m Afraid not,” Dad answered. “Mr. Williams only had two tickets. He was thoughtful enough to offer the tickets to me when he found out he’d be out of town this weekend.”

Dad was lost in thought. “Caleb, don’t you think you ‘re too young to enjoy a professional basketball game?” “No!” Caleb shouted “I know all the best players! I know the team’s record! I know…” “All right, all right,” Dad finally had to agree. He turned to me and tried again. “Jill, since you’re a girl…” Before I could reply, Mom said, “Jill’s out there practicing with Marcus and all of his friends, and she’s better than quite a few of them!”

“Okay, okay,” Dad held up his hands. “I guess I’ll have to find out a fair way of choosing among the three of you by tomorrow morning. I’ll have to decide who deserves it most.”

The next morning, Marcus hurried into the kitchen and sat down at the breakfast table. “Where’s Dad?” he asked as he reached for a box of biscuits. “He and Mom went to pick up some books from the library,” Caleb answered, reaching his hand out for a biscuit. “And he said we should all get started on our Saturday chores (家务) as soon as we finish the breakfast,” I added, enjoying my apple juice. “Chores? He must be kidding,” Marcus said. “How can we do the chores when the big game is only eleven hours away? I’m going to play basketball.” “Wait for me!” Caleb added, drinking the last of his milk and running after his brother.

5 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

On market days when the farmers around Darrowby brought their goods to the little town to sell, I used to take a walk across the square to meet the farmers who gathered there to chat. One of the farmers was telling me about his sick cow when he saw a little dog among the market stalls (货摊). The thing that made us notice the dog was that he was sitting up, paws dangling (悬垂), head pointing expectantly, begging, in front of the stall selling cakes and biscuits.

“Look at that little fellow,” the farmer said. “I wonder where he’s from.”

As he spoke, the stallholder threw the dog some bread which the animal ate eagerly, but when the man came round and stretched out a hand the little thing ran away.

I was standing there, trying to see where he had gone, when a young policeman came up to me.

“I’ve been watching that dog begging among the stalls all morning,” he said, “but I haven’t been able to get near him.”

“Yes, it’s strange. You can see he’s friendly, but he’s also afraid. I wonder who owns him.”

“I think he’s a stray (无主的宠物), Mr. Herriot. I know just about all the dogs around here. But this one is a stranger to me.”

I nodded. “I’m sure you’re right. Anything could have happened to him. He could have been ill-treated by somebody and run away, or he could have been dumped from a car.”

“Yes,” the policeman replied, “I don’t know how anybody can leave a helpless animal to fend for (照料) itself like that. I’ve had a few tries at catching him, but it’s no good.”

A week passed before I met the policeman again in the market.

“Have you caught the dog, sir?” I asked.

The policeman looked very serious. “Yes,” he replied, “I’m afraid he’s been arrested.”

“Arrested?” I said in astonishment. “What do you mean?”

“Well,” he said, “it seems that it’s against the law for a dog to go begging in the market square.”

“I still don’t know what this is all about,” I said. “Where is he now?”

“I’ll take you to him,” the policeman replied.

From her lifeguard station at the end of the pool, Jessica noticed clouds forming in the sky. By the time she took a break at 2:30, the wind was picking up and the sky was darkening. The pool manager announced over the loudspeaker that the pool was closing immediately, due to a weather warning. He asked everyone to head to the safety of home before the storm hit.

All of the swimmers had left by 3: 30 except for Jessica's neighbor, eight-year-old Zack Hill. Zack's mother had dropped him off at the pool while she went to work. She had planned to pick him up later, but the storm was coming fast. Jessica decided that she would drop Zack off on her way home. She taped a note for Mrs. Hill on the door of the pool office and headed out.

The minute Jessica and Zack left the parking lot, it was clear that this was no ordinary storm. The wind was very strong, the storm clouds were dark, and the sky had turned a terrible green. The rain hit just as Jessica turned onto her street, Jessica said, “Jack, I'm going to take you to my house. We need to get inside right away, and your house is farther away than mine.”

She pressed the garage-door opener, but nothing happened. The electricity was out. The front door was only a few feet away, but the wind was so strong that Jessica and Zack had to fight their way out of the car and into the house. Jessica held Zack's hand firmly. The door was heavy with the pressure of the wind. Finally, it opened, but it was blown out of Jessica's hand and it hit the side of the house. The window broke into pieces,Jessica picked up Zack and threw the two of them inside; her only thought was to get to a safe place.

Once there was a girl named Vivian who was the only child of her father. Her father was a big and successful businessman who owned seven star restaurants. He did everything only for his daughter.

Vivian was sent to the best university abroad. Although she had everything, the only thing she never owned was respect of other people.

When Vivian came back after her graduation and her father asked her to join his company as an accountant, she was naturally not happy with that. She wanted to work in a higher post but her father wanted her to start as an ordinary girl.

“Dad, I studied in the most outstanding university abroad and got a better education than any of the employees who work under you. Still, you want me to work under them?" said Vivian unhappily.

Vivian's father looked at her with a smile on his face. Vivian was annoyed by her father's reaction but she agreed to work as an accountant in the end.

After some months, there was an emergency situation in the company. One of the restaurants was short of employees because of a sudden resignation (辞职),so they were short on people to do other chores around the place and cook food fast. Vivian's father asked her to help that restaurant with him and the other employees.

When she entered the restaurant, she was hit by the air of tension around the employees. Everybody was busy doing something or other and there was a mess around the restaurant. When she went in the back of the kitchen, she saw a tower of unwashed dishes.

Her father neared her in a hurry and asked her, “Vivian, thank goodness, you are here. Darling, will you please help us and do the dishes?" He patted her on her shoulder and left her to do the dishes.

She looked at the dirty plates and spoons that were piled up before her.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The easy way out isn't always easiest. I learned that lesson when I decided to treat my father to a special meal. I glanced through the cookbook and chose a menu which included homemade bread. Knowing the bread would take time, I started on it as soon as he left for work.

As I was not experienced in cooking, I thought if a dozen was good, two dozen would be better, so I doubled everything. As Dad loved oranges, I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl. Soon there was sticky dough (面团) covered with ugly yellowish marks. Realizing I had been defeated, I put the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I wouldn't have to face him laughing at my work.

I went on preparing the rest of the meal, and, when Dad got home, we sat down to Cornish chicken with rice. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed. Twice he got up and went outside, saying he thought he heard a noise. The third time he left, I went to the windows to see what he was doing.

Looking out, I saw Dad standing about three feet from the rubbish bin, holding the lid up with a stick and looking into the container. When I came out of the house, he dropped the stick and explained that there was something alive in the rubbish bin. Picking up the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see. I felt cold. But I stepped closer and looked harder.

Without doubt it was my work. The hot sun had caused the dough to double in size and the. fermenting yeast (酵母) made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing. I had to admit what the "living thing" was and why it was there. I don't know who was more embarrassed by the whole thing, Dad or me.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Toby the cat was in a small cardboard box marked “free kittens” when Daisy met him and took him home. And from that moment on, he loved boxes.

He slept in hatboxes, gift boxes and takeout food boxes. He slept in Daisy’s sock drawer, if she left it open. When he was a kitten, the size of a small loaf of bread, he had slept in shoeboxes. But he grew and grew, and now he was a lot bigger than a loaf of bread. When he tried to sleep in a shoebox, his furry stomach hung over the sides.

Toby didn’t just sit in boxes, though. Sometimes he sat in flowerpots, or laundry baskets.

Daisy had a beautiful dollhouse for her birthday, a dark green three-story house with lots of furniture. Daisy loved it. So did Toby. He liked to push the furniture out of all the rooms and sit in the bedroom on the second floor.

One day Daisy came home from school, and she couldn’t find Toby. He wasn’t in the dollhouse, or her sock drawer, even though she’d forgotten to close it.

“Mom, Dad!” Daisy wailed. “Toby is gone!”

Daisy’s mom looked in the attic. There were boxes and dust bunnies, and even a mouse that had escaped Toby’s notice, but no Toby.

Daisy’s dad looked in the kitchen cabinets. There were pots and pans, and cans of soup, but no Toby.

Suddenly—“I found him!” Daisy cried.

The big cat was inside her mom’s new glass vase, and he didn’t look happy at all. Daisy tipped the vase over gently and tried to pull him out, but Toby just howled.

“We’ll have to break the vase to get him out!” Daisy cried.

Now her mom didn’t look happy. It was a beautiful vase.

“No,” said her dad. “If we break it, the glass pieces might hurt Toby. Maybe we can put butter on the inside of the vase and slide him out, like the time you got that ring stuck on your finger.”

The story between Mr. Jordan and me was the most amazing story I wanted to share. Mr. Jordan was one of the teachers who I would never forget.

When I was young at school, I loved talking, a characteristic not always appreciated by Mr. Jordan, my 10-grade English teacher.

Mr. Jordan was a teacher whom no one liked because he was too strict. He stood about 5-foot-five, was very thin and wore his hair pulled back in a way that gave him a horsy look. He wore those half-circular reading glasses. Whenever he got upset, he would lower his head and look at you over the top of his glasses.

One day in his class I was busy talking. I didn’t realize he had stopped teaching and staring straight at me. “Sam, I would like to see you after school.”

Later Mr. Jordan explained in a low, but very firm voice that showed he expected me to listen when he was talking. For punishment he told me to write a thousand-word essay on education and its effect on the society. He wanted it in by the following Wednesday.

Well, I met my deadline. I was confident. It was a good paper. And I expected a sign of approval from him. The next day in class, however, he was looking at me over his glasses. He called me forward and returned my paper. “Go back and rewrite,” he said. “Remember, each paragraph is supported to begin with a topic sentence.” When he gave my paper back a second time, he corrected the grammar. The third time, the spelling. The fourth time, it was punctuation. The fifth, it wasn’t neat enough. I was sick!

The sixth time, I rewrote the whole paper slowly in ink, leaving generous space. When he saw it, he removed his glasses and smiled. He firmly accepted the paper. After that, I put the whole thing out of my mind.
