1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I’d been waitressing for months, earning extra money for college. “Since it’s not too busy, go and see if Ray wants any more coffee,” my boss said to me as he pointed to an older man sitting in the corner.

Ray was holding the cup in his hand as he stared out of the window. He was a re gular lunch customer on Mondays and Fridays.

“Can I refill the cup for you, Ray?” I asked. He looked up with a peaceful smile and held his cup out toward me. “You know, I’ve been coming here for several years, and I have to say you have the nicest smile,” he whispered. “Can you sit for minutes... please?”

I sat down and he smiled,   “Your smile reminds me of my granddaughter, Sharon.” He took out a picture of her from his wall et and handed it to me. “She graduated from college last year.”

“What a nice-looking girl!” I said. “Does she live near you?”

Ray shook his head as he put the picture back in his wallet. “She moved to California last year. I miss her a lot. She and I used to have lunch together on Monday s and Fridays,”   he said. “She now wants me to move out there to be closer to her.”

“So, why don’t you?”

“I don’t know if I really want to move. I’ve been here all my life,” he answered.

I heard my boss calling me. “I guess that’s meant for me,” I said as I stood up.

We smiled at each other. “Ray……if my grandfather had been like you, I’d have asked him day and night to move closer to me, too.”   I patted his shoulder. “Don’t wait too long. Nice talking with you...”

For the next couple of weeks, Ray continued to come on Mondays and Fridays. But on that Monday of Thanksgiving week, he didn’t show up. Then one Wednesday afternoon, walking out to my car after work, I heard a voice call my name from across the parking lot.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

We three were running down the path, shouting and laughing when our dog Rubby suddenly stopped in the distance. He turned around and eyed us, with his tail swinging up and down.

My little brother Toby immediately sped up and rushed to where Rubby was. He bent down. picked up something and ran back to us.

It was a bunch of keys. We gathered in a circle, examining the keys one by one. hoping to find some useful information about its owner. There were 3 keys — a house key, a mail key and a car key and a unique key fob (吊坠) very likely designed specially.

“Gosh, the owner might be in great trouble,” my sister sighed. She was right. We once lost our keys. Although we had an extra house key, it took our parents quite a long time to get a new mail key. let alone there was a car key.

Who might have lost them?

Alter many wild guesses, we finally drew a conclusion. It might belong to someone in our neighborhood as only our neighbors wandered into the woods for a walk. But it was still impossible to figure out who it was. We had a very big neighborhood.

“The owner might come back to look for them,” Toby reminded.

So we decided to stay where we were, keeping a watchful eye on all passers-by. Our little dog ran in circles of excitement since we stayed so long in the wild. We remained in the woods for two hours, asking everyone we came across whether they lost their keys, but in vain.

It seemed we had to give up. But my sister wouldn’t, saying that she just couldn’t stop picturing the owner brushing aside tall grasses hoping to find the lost keys. “How anxious and upset the owner would be!”

I took a look at the bunch of keys again and quite by accident, found the key fob had the alarm button. “Look! If we press the alarm button, close enough of course, we can set off the owner’s car alarm.”

“That’s brilliant.”

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One morning this summer holiday, I was running on the road when I saw an elderly foreign lady waving her phone at me, speaking to me in a foreign language. Obviously, she didn’t speak English at all. When I listened to her more carefully, I found she was speaking German. She was clearly lost and trying to walk to the house where she lived. She showed me screen shots of maps on her phone as if she wanted me to help her find her way home. Actually, I learned some German in my spare time because our school will have German classes the next term. However, I was so poor at it that it was almost useless in practice.

I studied nearby and I knew my classmate, Lisa, who was good at speaking German. So I decided to telephone her. “Hi, Lisa. I came across a German lady. Do you have time to come and act as a translator now?” I said and then sent her my location, Unfortunately, Lisa answered, “Sorry, Belle. I’m shopping now. I can reach your place in about half an hour.” Hearing that, I had to tell her that I could manage myself.

Suddenly, an idea flashed through my mind. I downloaded a translation app and used the voice function to translate what the lady said into English. Just in this way, I learned that she came here to visit her daughter who was new to the city to teach. And I also determined the address she needed to get to. It was not far from here to her house, so I offered to walk with her to her destination. She was greatly grateful to me and kept saying sorry for taking my time.

When we got to the house, her daughter just came back. She was as touched by my kindness as her mother. I kept reminding her that it was no trouble for me, and that I only intend-ed to make sure her mother got there safely.

Walking with the lady was more rewarding than running alone. Despite having to rely on technology to communicate due to the language barrier, I felt lucky to have been able to help her. When I left, I couldn’t wait to share the wonderful experience with Lisa.

4 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Jenny was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help crying when she thought of the scolding (责骂) from her mother. Getting around aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand (货摊) for a while, watching the middle-aged man busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she had to leave. The man behind the stand noticed Jenny and asked, “Hey, do you want to have the noodles?” “Oh, yes, but I don’t have money,” she replied.

“I’ll treat you today,” said the man. He brought her a bowl of noodles, the smell so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently. “What is it?” asked the man kindly. “Actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears. “Even a stranger will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house.” Hearing the words, the man smiled, “I only gave you a bowl of noodles. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your thankfulness to her?”

Jenny sat there, speechless; she remembered her mother’s familiar face. “A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful. Why haven’t I thanked my mum for what she has done for me?” On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。

There are lots of chances in front of us. Whether you can seize them or not depends on the choices you make. This reminds me of one choice I made during my childhood.

Two tickets. Only two tickets to the final basketball game.

Three pairs of eyes focused on the tickets in Dad’s out-stretched hand. Mike, the oldest, asked the question running through everyone’s mind, “Only one ticket for us three? But, Dad, which of us will go with you?” Avery, the youngest, repeated the question quietly. I asked Dad if there was any chance to get more tickets. I might be the middle sister, but I was just as eager as my basketball-crazy brothers for a night out with Dad. Dad said he’d got the tickets from a friend and there were only two available.

Seeing that none of us would give up the chance, Dad told us he would choose which of the three of us deserved to go by the following morning.

The next morning, we hurried into the kitchen and looked for Dad, only to find that he had gone out. We were told to get started on our Saturday cleanup as soon as we finished breakfast. Mike complained that he couldn’t concentrate on chores with the game a mere eleven hours away. He slurped the last of his milk, grabbed the basketball and headed towards the back door. Avery dashed after his brother. Before I realized it, the door snapped shut. I glanced out the window and saw Mike practicing his shot while Avery cheered him on.

Seeing the mess on the breakfast table—the leftovers on the sticky plates and dirty cups, I felt frustrated. I approached the window and knocked on it. When the boys looked at me, I held up a kitchen sponge and dishtowel. Mike casually nodded to me and held up five fingers. Sure, five more minutes! I didn’t believe they would return to do the cleanup in five minutes, especially in Dad’s absence. Apparently, they had made their choice.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Tim Robinson, a former junior officer of the British Army, was on holiday in Bridport, Dorset, a town in England. While enjoying a walk down the beach, Tim slipped on a piece of seaweed lying in the sand and fell, breaking his leg.

Unfortunately, Tim did not bring his cell phone with him when he left for his walk. No one was in site, but as Tim lay helpless he remembered his military training and tried to think about what was around to help him. After struggling around on the beach, the pain became too much to handle. He stopped and thought about what to do.

With no phone and no one around, and with his leg hurting greatly, Tim had a decision to make. He could either continue this way in pain and hope that someone happened to see him, or he could try something else. It didn’t matter that his leg had made him partially immobile, Tim still had the ability to crawl (爬行), and so he did.

The choice was easy, but the crawl was tough. Tim told the Daily Mail, “After I crawled to about a mile-and-a-quarter away from the car park, I started flashing my torch in SOS and spinning it over my head to create a Buzz-Saw signal which is a way of attracting helicopters in the armed forces.”

No one seemed to be around. At least, no one could read Tim’s signals for help. Once again, he had to either stay where he was and wait for help or get moving. In his mind he had no choice. There was no response to begin with, so he crawled for five minutes and covered about 50 meters before making the same signal three times. Most people couldn’t imagine crawling for any distance with a broken leg, but Tim wasn’t about to give up.
