When I was in primary school, I was actually a little shy. One thing that absolutely terrified me was speaking in front of many people, whether strangers or acquaintances (熟人). It was my sixth-grade teacher, Mr. Bamick, who helped me get past that. That year we had to present four oral book reports in front of the class. Some of the kids were even glad to do it, but I was scared to death. Mr. Bamick recognized my fear, so he told me to do a report on a book that was about something that really interested me. So I did the first report on baseball.
When it came time for me to present it to the class, Mr. Bamick cut me some slack and let me read the report rather than deliver it from memory. Some of my classmates criticized me for the delivery, but Mr. Bamick defended me. By the end of the year I had completed all four of the oral book reports. It wasn’t easy or comfortable for me, but I did it.
Years later I realized that Mr. Bamick did me a great favor in sixth grade. One of the opportunities I get when I win a tennis tournament (锦标赛) is to make comments to the fans who attend the match. Some of these are carried live on television and all of them are before thousands of people. It’s still not one of my favorite things to do, but, with Mr. Bamick’s help, I get through it from time to time. Before long, I was asked to bring my favorite childhood teacher to a national event in Dallas. I was excited when Mr. Bamick joined me for the event. It meant a lot to me that he was there.
We all need heroes in our lives. They can be role models or they can be important anchors in our world. Mr. Bamick believed in me and helped me to believe in myself. It was he who helped me build the person I became.

4 . Ever since I started my calligraphy business two years ago, I’ve been on social media every single day without any break. Social media, and especially Instagram, has been essential for running my business because I use it to promote my products and services, stay in contact with possible customers, and create content helping calligraphers grow their businesses.
I had been ignoring other parts of my life, like my family, friends, and my mental well-being, so a break was long overdue. My mom hadn’t been doing so well in terms of her mental health, so I wanted to take some time to support her more. I wanted to take some time off Instagram to reflect and plan for the future. I was chatting with strangers and possible customers on social media way more than with actual friends. That made me sad and defeated.
So, what could be done? I decided to delete (卸载) Instagram from my phone and only used the PC version to check up on what my customers were doing for a month. Now that it’s been a month, I want to share some things that I’ve learned.
During this month off Instagram, I realized that there was so much more in life than following people and sharing things on social media. Don’t get me wrong — I love learning about what others are doing through their stories and posts, and I know that creating content is a part of how I can grow my business — but I had totally forgotten that I had actual hobbies of my own.
I’m a huge fan of social media for many reasons, but I just don’t think the way I was using it was healthy. It’s difficult to find a balance, but I’m going to try anyway. I know that this one month off Instagram was healthy for me. I’m going back, but it’s going to be different. And I feel good about going back!

7 . When I set out to drop my dad of fat the airport, it was dark and dreary(沉闷的). It started to rain on the way. When I left the airport, the visibility wasn`t clear because of the drops of rain. It was before 6 am.
Even though the road conditions were poor, I drove at my normal speed. I was angry with the more cautious drivers ahead of me that were delaying my drive. The exit ramp (坡道) to the highway was a tight spiral(急盘旋). It is a dangerous spot in good weather and totally scary when the weather is miserable or it is dark. But I didn`t want to slow down and arrive home any later than necessary. I drove down the ramp too fast. The road was wet and my car slid, landing face down on the passenger side.
I didn’t like to drive by myself at the time and had debated taking my husband and son with me on the trip. Thankfully, I was alone in the car. My accident was slight. In fact, I was lucky enough not to have a single scratch. I shuddered to think the injuries my son would have suffered had he been in the backseat of that car with no seatbelt when it rolled. After the ear rolled three times, I found my mobile phone was lost in a pile of small things that were all lying in the bottom of the car. A lady was kind enough to let me borrow her mobile phone, but with-out the numbers preprogrammed who could I call? I was lucky enough to remember my father`s mobile phone number, and fortunate that he hadn`t yet got on his plane.
You never know when an accident will happen. As a driver, I will keep safety in mind by obeying all traffic laws and have safe-driving habits, especially in bad weather. Insist your children always wear their seatbelts. Life is a journey and everyone should value it and enjoy the ride.

8 . My grandmother was from a town in Michigan Summer after summer, I enjoyed staying with my grandparents as a young child. I was from the city and loved the small town they lived in. People knew everyone, their kids, their pets, their ancestors. The bond(关系)with them continued to grow as I grew and they got older. Grandma was always using her hands for something exciting. She would make little sandwicbes and we’d have tea parties. She’d make beautiful quilts(被子) for each one. I remember the small thimble(顶针)she would use while doing her needle work.
A few years ago, when grandma left this earth, I bid farewell(告别 to a loving grandmother. How quickly our lives can change! We had just had tea together a couple of months earlier, on her 91st a birthday.
I missed her very much. On one particular birthday, when I was feeling a little low, something happened to make me feel she was sharing that special day with me. I was arranging some colorfully pillows that she had made, and suddenly I felt something inside one pillow(枕头). It was small and hard.I move it to the seam (接缝)that I carefully opened, and to my delight out came a tiny silver thimble! How happy I was to find something that had been a part of her! Instead of thinking that it had fallen off her finger, I pictured her sewing (缝)it in that little pillow that I just happened to place on my bedspread that day. I carefully laid the thimble alongside the others I’ve collected over the years, where I could continue to see the gift God chose to show to me. What a precious (宝贵的) memory of a very special lady who somehow, I knew, was laughing in delight at sewing her thimble inside my pillow! I made some tea, using my best china, as Grandma always did, and enjoyed my tea and Grandma’s thimble. What a wonderful birthday that was!
