As he lay awake that night, Tony could hear his parents discussing his sister Alice’s birthday. It was just two days away. Birthdays were always a lot of fun, even though there was no money for store-bought gifts. Nearly all of toys he and his sister had were homemade. There was nothing wrong with that, he knew. Like many families in this part, they were poor.
This birthday would be different, though. Alice was older now, and he’d seen how her eyes lit up when she saw the new doll at Honey House, a neighborhood store just down the road from their house.
How he longed for her to have it! An idea finally came to him just before he went to bed. After a quick breakfast the following morning, he tied a bag to the handlebars of his bike and headed toward a village hill.
After a long journey, he reached his destination, the mango forest. There were already two other boys there. Tony grabbed his bag and set to work immediately.
The sun was high overhead. The weather was hot and nearly all of the taller trees held ripe mangoes but they were well beyond reach. Tony struggled to climb the trees to pick mangoes, though he fell off many times.
His efforts were sometimes rewarded when a mango dropped into the bag. After a while his neck ached from looking upward, and his arms grew sore. He kept at it, though, and by late afternoon his bag was nearly full.

When I was in high school, most of my friend had bicycles. I hoped I could also have it. One day I saw a second-hand bicycle, that was only one hundred yuan. I asked my father the money. But he said he could only give me half the money. I should find the other half myself. So I went to sell newspapers after the school. My father was pleasing when I showed him the money a month after. He gives me the other fifty. You can imagine how happily I was when I rode to school by my own bicycle.
7 . It was a cold and snowy morning after the winter vacation. Actually, it was my first day at my new school. I was walking slowly and worrying about lots of things. It was 7:00 in the morning and there weren't many people on the road. A girl on a bike passed me quickly. She was riding on ice when suddenly she fell off her bike a few steps in front of me. She was trying hard to get up but fell once more. Without thinking, I went over and helped her stand up. She said, "Thank you," with a smile and then rode away. The words "Thank you" warmed me and this small event made me feel less nervous about my new school.
Finally, I got to school. The teacher led me to the classroom and asked me to sit down beside a girl. I was so nervous. I knew some of the students were looking at me but I didn't dare to look at them. Soon the first class started. It was English. They used a different textbook from my old school and I didn't have a copy. As I was wondering what to do, a book appeared in front of me. “Let's share,” the girl next to me said." And hi, I'm Carrie." I looked up. It was the girl I helped that morning. What a surprise!
From then on, we became good friends. She was my first and best friend at my new school. Helping her also helped me find a friend.

9 . One day, a few years ago, I was rushing from the pool when a man stopped me and said, “You must come to swim with the team.” I was in my early 50s--- too old for a swim team, I thought. But the coach--- Igor was his name---insisted: “I can see you are a good swimmer.”
Encouraged, I joined his group of swimmers. Workouts started at 5:30 in the morning when most people were still in bed. Although we were all at different swimming levels, we had one thing in common: We wanted to get better.
After a few days, a bunch of us were complaining about how little progress we were making, how slow we were. Igor smiled and said, “You are all confused! Speed is not the goal; it is the result of perfectly beautiful technique.” What really mattered to Igor was the technique. Once you mastered that, he argued, speed would follow naturally. Speed was simply the welcome side effect of swimming well.
I’ve been thinking lately that there’s a lesson here that goes beyond the pool. We all wanted to swim faster and the more hysterically (歇斯底里般地)we tried, the more speed escaped us. The same goes for happiness. Everyone wants to be happy, yet the more directly we go after happiness, the more elusive (难以捕捉的)it becomes.
Research shows that thinking too much about how to be happy actually weakens well-being. This is in part because all that thinking consumes a fair amount of time, and is not itself enjoyable. Study after study shows that good social relationships are the strongest, most consistent predictor of a happy life.
Our technique has improved, thanks to Igor. Some days, 1 swim only a little faster than I did before. But even if 1 don’t, I feel great.
In the end, happiness is a side effect of living well—-just like speed can be the result of excellent swimming technique. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to the pool.

10 . It was in April and a bit of a storm was around the corner. I had been out visiting friends in the Hutt Valley and at about 9:30 pm I was driving my car home when the strong wind and the pouring rain came. Apart from one other car in front of me there was no traffic on the road.
At Point Howard I saw the red flashing light bounce off the seaward hillock (小丘) before I saw the police car. I pulled up behind the other car and the policeman said the road was badly flooded and asked if I could stay somewhere in the Hutt Valley.
The other driver was eager to give it a go, so we were allowed through but were told to keep an eye on each other. I soon lost sight of the vehicle (车辆) in front. In Sorrento Bay a huge wave hit the car and pushed it to the side of the road, which scared the pants off me.
I drove through the sea water and rain and managed to get around the bluff (陡岸) into Lowry Bay, where I had to feel the way around fallen trees, hitting one that was hidden by the driving spray (水花). I eventually made it home and rang the police to report how bad it had been. I was told the road had been closed immediately after we had passed through so we were the last vehicles to get to Eastbourne that night.
After the ship Wahine sank, I volunteered with some of my friends to assist around the Pencarrow Coast the next morning. However, the police refused to let local people through to help. Later in the day, with the waters of the harbour having calmed, I saved two people along the beach and reported them to the police. It was a comfort to help two people after the huge storm.
