3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As he lay awake that night, Tony could hear his parents discussing his sister Alice’s birthday. It was just two days away. Birthdays were always a lot of fun, even though there was no money for store-bought gifts. Nearly all of toys he and his sister had were homemade. There was nothing wrong with that, he knew. Like many families in this part, they were poor.

This birthday would be different, though. Alice was older now, and he’d seen how her eyes lit up when she saw the new doll at Honey House, a neighborhood store just down the road from their house.

How he longed for her to have it! An idea finally came to him just before he went to bed. After a quick breakfast the following morning, he tied a bag to the handlebars of his bike and headed toward a village hill.

After a long journey, he reached his destination, the mango forest. There were already two other boys there. Tony grabbed his bag and set to work immediately.

The sun was high overhead. The weather was hot and nearly all of the taller trees held ripe mangoes but they were well beyond reach. Tony struggled to climb the trees to pick mangoes, though he fell off many times.

His efforts were sometimes rewarded when a mango dropped into the bag. After a while his neck ached from looking upward, and his arms grew sore. He kept at it, though, and by late afternoon his bag was nearly full.

Tony rushed back to Honey House, out of breath, only to find the owner of the store was going to close the door.

7 . It was a cold and snowy morning after the winter vacation. Actually, it was my first day at my new school. I was walking slowly and worrying about lots of things. 9 . One day, a few years ago, I was rushing from the pool when a man stopped me and said, “You must come to swim with the team.” I was in my early 50s--- too old for a swim team, I thought. But the coach--- Igor was his name---insisted: “I can see you are a good swimmer.”

Encouraged, I joined his group of swimmers. Workouts started at 5:30 in the morning when most people were still in bed. Although we were all at different swimming levels, we had one thing in common: We wanted to get better.

After a few days, a bunch of us were complaining about how little progress we were making, how slow we were. Igor smiled and said, “You are all confused! Speed is not the goal; it is the result of perfectly beautiful technique.” What really mattered to Igor was the technique. Once you mastered that, he argued, speed would follow naturally. Speed was simply the welcome side effect of swimming well.

I’ve been thinking lately that there’s a lesson here that goes beyond the pool. We all wanted to swim faster and the more hysterically (歇斯底里般地)we tried, the more speed escaped us. The same goes for happiness. Everyone wants to be happy, yet the more directly we go after happiness, the more elusive (难以捕捉的)it becomes.

Research shows that thinking too much about how to be happy actually weakens well-being. This is in part because all that thinking consumes a fair amount of time, and is not itself enjoyable. Study after study shows that good social relationships are the strongest, most consistent predictor of a happy life.

Our technique has improved, thanks to Igor. Some days, 1 swim only a little faster than I did before. But even if 1 don’t, I feel great.

In the end, happiness is a side effect of living well—-just like speed can be the result of excellent swimming technique. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to the pool.

1. How did the author react when Igor invited him to join the team?
A.He hesitated at first.B.He refused firmly.
C.He accepted it at once.D.He consulted his coach.
2. Why did some teammates feel unhappy after a few days?
A.They learned nothing new.B.They were unable to swim faster.

3. What happens when the author focuses on swimming?
A.He becomes the best on the team.B.His social relationships have improved.
C.He makes progress and enjoys himselfD.His swimming speed has increased greatly.
4. What can we know about happiness?

B.Happiness is a side effect of a personal hobby.

10 . It was in April and a bit of a storm was around the corner. I had been out visiting friends in the Hutt Valley and at about 9:30 pm I was driving my car home when the strong wind and the pouring rain came. Apart from one other car in front of me there was no traffic on the road.

At Point Howard I saw the red flashing light bounce off the seaward hillock (小丘) before I saw the police car. I pulled up behind the other car and the policeman said the road was badly flooded and asked if I could stay somewhere in the Hutt Valley.

The other driver was eager to give it a go, so we were allowed through but were told to keep an eye on each other. I soon lost sight of the vehicle (车辆) in front. In Sorrento Bay a huge wave hit the car and pushed it to the side of the road, which scared the pants off me.

I drove through the sea water and rain and managed to get around the bluff (陡岸) into Lowry Bay, where I had to feel the way around fallen trees, hitting one that was hidden by the driving spray (水花). I eventually made it home and rang the police to report how bad it had been. I was told the road had been closed immediately after we had passed through so we were the last vehicles to get to Eastbourne that night.

After the ship Wahine sank, I volunteered with some of my friends to assist around the Pencarrow Coast the next morning. However, the police refused to let local people through to help. Later in the day, with the waters of the harbour having calmed, I saved two people along the beach and reported them to the police. It was a comfort to help two people after the huge storm.

1. What happened when the author arrived at Point Howard?
A.He got wet in the flood.
B.He almost ran into another car.
C.He lost sight of the car in front of him.
D.He was advised to go back to the Hutt Valley.
2. What did the author do after talking to the police?
A.He changed his pants.
B.He crashed into a fallen tree.
C.He gave the other driver a lift.
D.He took the lead in going through the flood.
3. Why did the author call the police?
A.To ask them for help.
B.To inform them he was home.
C.To advise them to close the road.
D.To brief them on the road situation.
4. In what situation did the author save the two people?
A.When the police left the beach.
B.When the harbour was safe again.
C.When he saw the ship Wahine sink.
D.When he came across some volunteers.
