文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。记叙了作者一次在家遇到上门推销杀虫剂,并差一点购买了杀虫剂的故事。

1 . Life in the summertime is often full of pests. Like most Long Island homeowners, I want to ensure my suburban life with pest-free living. So it was with wide-eyed wonder that I greeted the smiling exterminator who rang my bell.

“We'll be serving your neighbors, Mike and Sarah (I'm not familiar with either one by name).” he waved in the other direction. “Since we'll have a team here tomorrow, we're offering a discount.” He came out with numbers beginning from $299 then in seconds to $89.

“You've probably been seeing the ant hills around.” he moved toward my front walkway and lawn. “And have you seen the bees that dig nests in the ground?” he continued with his head shaking up and down pushing me to do the same.

“What we do is spray three feet out from your foundation and three feet up.” As he was talking and without breaking eye contact, he opened his iPad cover and began operating at the screen to show me frightening images. “It also kills other pests, like spiders. It is the best pesticide,” he said, pausing for effect.

He then went into soft talk to close the deal, correctly foreseeing that I would be concerned about safety and the environmental impact on my vegetable garden, plants and our little patch of planet here on Long Island. “The products are environmentally responsible, safe with children and pets,” he said.

I'm unkind when it comes to unwanted visitors entering on my out-of-doors moments. Any insect found in my house or on my deck is bound to be poisoned or pancaked.

Unfortunately for the exterminator, just as I was considering making an appointment. Billy, my fearless husband, pulled into our driveway, which made me ask for a business card out of politeness instead.

2. What did the exterminator offer the author if she accepted his service?
A.A free pesticide.B.A discount.C.An iPad for free.D.A group rate.
3. Why was the author worried about the pesticide?
A.It might cause frightening images.B.It might be too expensive for her to afford.
C.It might harm her family and surroundings.D.It might have no effect on unwanted visitors.
4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.The author is sure to phone the salesman later.
B.Billy made up his mind to purchase the pesticide.
C.Billy drove home to prevent the author from being cheated by the exterminator.
D.The author had planned to buy the pesticide before Billy appeared.

Giorgio's neighbor's name was Emil, who was 78 years old. Emil's wife had passed away in December. The only comfort left to Emil was his piano. He spent days alone at home because of gloom, only looking forward to playing his wife's favorite piano song every night.

When Giorgio heard the music coming from the other side of the wall, he could really feel how moved the old man was. One day, Giorgio suddenly got an idea — writing a note to his new neighbor and hoping to duet (合奏) a piece of music. Then, Giorgio put a piece of paper reading “you are heard, and not alone" on Emil's door. Thus, Giorgio began to play the piano with Emil every night. And a new friendship started.

Later, Emil wrote back "Dear Giorgio, I knew very little about you, but you lit my life, and we shared music with the world. I'll keep playing, thinking of how powerful music can be."

It took place in a teacher’s family. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school, when he threw the ball at a vase(花瓶)—his mother’s favourite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued(用胶水粘)the pieces together and put the vase back to its place.

The mother noticed the cracks(裂纹)that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he broke the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbour’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn't drive it away. It raced around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. His mother was quite clear that her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, Ben’s mother realized she shouldn't just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.

Before going to. bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the living room at once. As he had already lied, he was determined to deny(否认)everything to the end, no matter how angry his mum became.

In the living room, calmly bathed in the light, his mother's face showed no sign of anger. Instead, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him one.

9 . It was one of those terribly hot days in Baltimore. Needless to say, it was too hot to do anything outside. But it was also scorching in our apartment. This was 1962, and I would not live in a place with an air conditioner for another ten years. So my brother and I decided to leave the apartment to find someplace indoors. He suggested we could see a movie. It was a brilliant plan.

Movie theaters were one of the few places you could sit all day and — most important — sit in air conditioning. In those days, you could buy one ticket and sit through two movies. Then, the theater would show the same two movies again. If you wanted to, you could sit through them twice. Most people did not do that, but the manager at our theater. Mr. Bellow did not mind if you did.

That particular day, my brother and I sat through both movies twice, trying to escape the heat. We bought three bags of popcorn and three sodas each. Then, we sat and watched The Music Man followed by The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. We’d already seen the second movie once before. It had been at the theater since January, because Mr. Bellow loved anything with John Wayne in it.

We left the theater around 8, just before the evening shows began. But we returned the next day and saw the same two movies again, twice more. And we did it the next day too. Finally, on the fourth day, the heat wave broke.

Still, to this day I can sing half the songs in The Music Man and recite half of John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart’s dialogue from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance! Those memories are some of the few I have of the heat wave of 1962. They’re really memories of the screen, not memories of my life.

1. In which year did the author first live in a place with an air conditioner?
A.1952B.1962
C.1972D.1982
2. What do we know about Mr. Bellow?
A.He loved children very much.B.He was a fan of John Wayne.
C.He sold air conditioners.D.He was a movie star.
3. Why did the author and his/her brother see the same movies several times?
A.The two movies were really wonderful.
B.They wanted to avoid the heat outside.
C.The manager of the theater was friendly.
D.They liked the popcorn and the soda at the theater.
4. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.The author turned out to be a great singer.
B.The author enjoyed the heat wave of 1962.
C.The author’s life has been changed by the two movies.
D.The author considers the experience at the theater unforgettable.
