2 . I received a message on WeChat. It began harmlessly enough: “Hey, girl Wanted to invite you to join my next challenge group —we’ll be focusing on fitting in 30minutes of exercise and balanced nutrition.”

It was all becoming too much. WeChat was running my life, not me.

But what killed WeChat for me was when I posted a photo, and five minutes later my son asked me how many “likes” it had got. His question was a wake-up call.

Before WeChat, surfing the internet was occasional and I spent a lot more time reading books and magazines. I checked in with friends through texts, emails and phone calls.

To recreate the simple life of those days and set a healthier example for my son, I deactivated my WeChat account.

I’d been in the habit of checking WeChat many times a day, so I had to come up with some new habits. I carried a novel around with me. I picked up knitting. I started taking yoga classes.

I started to remember a few things. My body is fine just the way it is. I have friends who will help me out when I’m in trouble, and I will help them out. I do my best to be a good mother, and our son is happy and healthy. We are very lucky to be able to have two vacations a year.

I stopped looking at the world through my cellphone. I felt completely present in the moment.

The break left me feeling better about myself, my family, my home and my life.

After a few weeks, I returned to WeChat. Now I look at the photos of my friends’ kids growing up and treasure how social media allows me to keep in touch with family far and wide. I look in on a daily basis, but no longer with the desire constantly to post updates.

It is not an addiction any more.

3. What is the author’s attitude towards constantly using social media?
A.PositiveB.SupportiveC.NegativeD.Indifferent.

8 . My 12-year-old niece was staying with us for a couple of days. She was remembering some acts of kindness that we did together when she was less than five years old. We talked about how so much had changed, and with the pandemic, how difficult it would be to do so many of those things, especially when it comes to strangers.

The next day, I needed something from the downtown area and happened to take her with me. As we walked

around on the street, we heard a beautiful male voice singing a very soulful song. We turned around to see a middle-aged man sitting on a street comer with his guitar. A couple were sitting on a bench nearby and listening to his music.

After getting a few things done, we happened to sit at an outdoor dining restaurant across from him on the other side of the street. My niece was learning how to sing herself, and she kept smiling and saying how wonderful his singing was. Seeing how moved she was by his music, at the end of our meal, I gave her a ten-dollar bill and asked her to walk across the street and put it in his bowl.

9 . Today what I want to do is to share the story of my own.

I used to be the shyest person in the world. I hid behind my elder sister whenever I had to speak to a stranger. When I was asked to speak in class, I could hardly breathe, much less speak.

Then, in seventh grade, my sister suggested I take voice lessons. After thinking carefully, I did and tried to keep it a secret. I began a series of exercises, making it so strange that I couldn't help laughing. I learned how to howl(长嚎) like a cowboy and snort like an old lady.

By playing around with sound in the class, I gained confidence in the part of me that had been a point of embarrassment before my voice.

A few months later, I was asked to sing for some old people. I thought I would do better than before because of the voice lessons. I opened my mouth and —nothing. I couldn't remember the lyrics! My face turned red. Then the thought came into my mind: I've embarrassed myself enough in front of this crowd. There's really nothing else to lose. So, for my second song. I just relaxed and felt the energy of the song lift me. And I did much better. After that, I started singing to myself as loudly as I could in my room. That's something I had never done before. I am not a shy person anymore. What I really want to say is singing has made me more outgoing.
