1 . Xiong Linghao was born on May 29th, 2002 in Mianyang City, Sichuan Province. She lost her eyesight because of illness when she was only two months old. But her mother later found that Xiong had a talent for music. She could play children’s songs on a small electric (电子的) piano when she was 3 years old. At the age of 6, she started learning the piano.
Unlike most learners, Xiong could not see the piano keyboard (琴键), so she must remember where each key is through its sound. That was very hard for her. She practiced for six to eight hours every day so that she could find the right keys.
Xiong’s piano skill was getting better and better as she kept practicing. In 2020, she won the Special Jury Prize in an international youth piano competition in Shanghai. “The piano is my best friend,” said Xiong. It brings so much pleasure into my life and encourages me to face my life bravely.”
Xiong has a great dream. She wants to be a great musician like Beethoven. Beethoven lost his hearing in his 20s and later went completely deaf, but he didn’t give up his love for music. He wrote so many famous music works in his life. So for herself, Xiong still has a long way to go.

John decided to go skiing with his friend, Keith. So they loaded up John’s car and headed north. After driving for a few hours, they got caught in a terrible snowstorm. The snow was falling harder and harder and it was more and more difficult to go on driving. So they decided to look for a house along the way to protect themselves from the heavy snow. At last they saw a small farm in front of them. Thus they pulled into the farm and asked the middle-aged lady who answered the door if they could spend the night in her house.
“I realize it’s terrible weather out there but I have this house only big enough for my five children, and I have no spare room for you,” she explained. “I’m afraid that I can’t offer you a comfortable place to spend the night and you have to continue to look for your shelter.”
John and Keith felt disappointed. It was late and they were not sure of finding a safe shelter for the night. They didn’t know what they should do next. John looked at Keith, who kept silent. Just then, he looked around and found an empty storehouse in the yard. An idea struck him. He was determined to beg the lady to permit them to stay in the storehouse.
“Don’t worry,” John said. “We’ll be happy to sleep in the storehouse. And if the weather breaks, we’ll be gone at first light.” The lady agreed, and the two men found their way to the storehouse and settled in for the night.
But there was little furniture in the storehouse, and it was such freezing weather. They were trembling with cold and they might be most likely to freeze at night. It seemed that they would have to sleep in their clothes. Just then, three children walked into the storehouse, with something in their hands.

The Right Thing
My mother worked as a housekeeper and she was often given used toys as well as many other goodies by her clients. My elder sister and I always loved sharing the recycled books and board games brought home by my beloved mom, which we considered great gifts life presented us.
The long-awaited Christmas finally approached. One December day, an old model toy car arrived in the load of goods. It was as long as my forearm and took both hands to lift. My sister didn’t want it, so it was all mine. I immediately set down to wiping it clean and polishing it to a bright candy-apple red. It turned to be a thing of beauty, and I became overjoyed at possessing it. My elder sister was amazed at the newly-polished, refreshing toy car, with a hint of regret and envy in her eyes.
As was planned, our relatives from France came to visit us that Christmas. It was a time when the family bond got strengthened. I shared the prized toy car with Alex, my young French cousin. Eyes glued to it, he fell in love with the wonderful, shiny red automobile the instant he saw it. It was a rare moment to see him feeling so relieved and happy. He’d been unlucky so far in life, suffering severe, life-threatening illnesses as a child, leaving him mentally and physically stuck and the family starved of cash. Of course, such lovely toys like my dear model car were unreachable dreams for him.
Seeing Alex’s consuming thrill brought by the red car, I was seized by immense joy as well. But contrary to Alex’s excitement, a voice inside me constantly reminded, “Watch out! He’d keep it for himself.”, which got me faintly worried. I followed my cousin for fear of something.
My mother also noticed Alex’s fondness for the car. Approaching me, she asked gently in a low voice, “Would you like to give it to Alex?”

6 . My dad loves his wine. One day while making a sandwich, I noticed the date on one of his wine bottles. I then took it out of the pantry (食品贮藏室) and rushed toward my father.
“Dad, Dad!” I shouted. “This wine is way past its ‘best before’ date.”
“Son, hold on,” he said.
“No, you can’t drink this any more!”
“Wait, let me tell you... ”
“Would you like me to throw it away for you?” I asked.
“Ha, ha, no. Let me explain something,” my father said cheerfully.
“But...” I didn’t want my father getting sick.
“Son. some wines get better over time. The longer you wait to drink it. the better it will be. Although this may seem strange. it is true.”
When I was young, I didn’t have any understanding of what this meant. But now, looking back, this would have been very helpful to remember as I went through my teenager years.
We are all so keen to reach the next step quickly that we will do anything to get there. This has a negative effect on our society. In a job situation, we want promotion so much that we will step on others. When trying to go to the right college, we will do anything to get in. When we rush through our homework, we may not study enough for the test, and end up failing. All these common situations have one thing in common: they could all be solved if we just took our time.
When we don’t fully prepare ourselves for the next level, we become a society of people who aren’t ready, but want the rewards of reaching the next level. This cheats others who have prepared and deserve the job. We need to be ready for whatever comes, ready for the unexpected. Just as wine gets better over time, so will the things in our paths.

B.Getting the best job as quickly as possible. |
C.Preparing ourselves for a promotion patiently. |
D.Doing schoolwork despite missing the deadline. |
A.Good things come to those who wait. | B.Positive thinking results in success. |
C.He who laughs last, laughs best. | D.Time and tide wait for no man. |
It was the 9th of January, a day I will remember for a long time. It was a normal Sunday morning around 8:30 am, right on time for Sammy’s morning walk. I didn’t walk because of my lameness, so I rode in my power wheelchair. We got out the door and made our way toward a property near my apartment complex. We got to the gate and out of the complex, and we went left onto the extra wide sidewalk. It was about a mile’s walk one way , passing a firehouse on the right side of the road, before we turned around and started back.
Along the path we took was a large plate over the sidewalk. I passed over it the first time without any problems. My wheelchair could reach up to 8 miles per hour, but we went a little slower on our walks, around 2 miles per hour, so Sammy could keep up. Even so, this speed was pretty fast for a 15-year-old dog.
As we turned around and made our way back, I went over the sidewalk plate again except that this time it was moved without me realizing it, putting my wheelchair in the grass on the embankment (路堤). The next thing I knew, my wheelchair started to tip over, throwing me out of the chair and rolling down the embankment into the muddy water below.
My right leg was hurt, and I was unable to pull myself upright. I was too weak to gather my strength to call for help. The muddy water was cold and I felt it hard to breathe with my body folded and twisted in a strange position. Meanwhile, Sammy was sitting up on the sidewalk with his leash (牵狗皮带) caught under the tipped over wheelchair. I heard him barking louder than ever heard. He knew I was hurt and was in danger.
By the way my wheelchair tipped over, a passerby on the street would not be able to see it from the road. All anyone could see was a dog barking on the sidewalk almost night across the street from the firehouse.

I had a dream from primary school: to work in television. My parents owned a little grocery store, so we were definitely not fancy people. Thankfully, my dad had raised me to have a lot of confidence. He often said, “You can do anything you want to do.” My dad was particularly supportive. He was my steady rock — always there for me.
With his help and encouragement, I was admitted to the radio and television arts program at Ryerson in Toronto. I really loved the program and worked hard and I was named the most outstanding graduate. I felt like I was already living my dream. I began to think that maybe I could apply for an internship in CBC or CTV.
Luckily, Global Television had just started broadcasting in Canada that year. I thought to myself: I’m new and they're new, so if Fm going to get to know one person at Global, it might as well be the president. I was scared, but I knew deep down inside that this was what I wanted. When I called my dad and told him my plan, he said, “Good, Faye. That’s exactly what you should do.”
With my heart just about pounding out of my body, I called up the president of Global Television. Suddenly Mr. Slaight was on the phone. “I’ve heard that your studio facilities are amazing. I could come at eleven o’clock on Monday or eleven o’clock on Sunday for a tour. What would suit you better?” I caught him totally off guard. He stuttered a bit, and then picked a day. When I hung up, I was scared but excited.
I arrived at the studio on the appointed day. When Mr. Slaight took me around, he looked at me and said, “What do you want?” He sounded furious but curious. “All I want is a chance to audition. I just want you to know my face. That’s all I’m asking.”
I didn’t know whether I’d ever hear from him again, but two weeks later, his secretary called, “Mr. Slaight wants to know if you’d like to come and audition for a new school life show.” I immediately answered,“Sure!”
