5 . I received a message on WeChat. It began harmlessly enough: “Hey, girl Wanted to invite you to join my next challenge group —we’ll be focusing on fitting in 30minutes of exercise and balanced nutrition.”

It was all becoming too much. WeChat was running my life, not me.

But what killed WeChat for me was when I posted a photo, and five minutes later my son asked me how many “likes” it had got. His question was a wake-up call.

Before WeChat, surfing the internet was occasional and I spent a lot more time reading books and magazines. I checked in with friends through texts, emails and phone calls.

To recreate the simple life of those days and set a healthier example for my son, I deactivated my WeChat account.

I’d been in the habit of checking WeChat many times a day, so I had to come up with some new habits. I carried a novel around with me. I picked up knitting. I started taking yoga classes.

I started to remember a few things. My body is fine just the way it is. I have friends who will help me out when I’m in trouble, and I will help them out. I do my best to be a good mother, and our son is happy and healthy. We are very lucky to be able to have two vacations a year.

I stopped looking at the world through my cellphone. I felt completely present in the moment.

The break left me feeling better about myself, my family, my home and my life.

After a few weeks, I returned to WeChat. Now I look at the photos of my friends’ kids growing up and treasure how social media allows me to keep in touch with family far and wide. I look in on a daily basis, but no longer with the desire constantly to post updates.

It is not an addiction any more.

1. The underlined word “deactivate” in Paragraph 6 is closest in meaning to “________”.
A.closeB.updateC.keepD.check
2. What did the author think of the break from WeChat?
A.it was good for her eyes.B.It stopped her getting news.
C.It distanced her from her friends.D.It gave her time to find beauty in life
3. What is the author’s attitude towards constantly using social media?
A.PositiveB.SupportiveC.NegativeD.Indifferent.

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Marmi, my big sister, was eagerly looking for a pup(小狗) to look after and love all her life, so she would ask Mummy many times for a pup of her own, but the answer was always no. You see, my mum is not very fond of dogs, never has been, and always says they're too big a responsibility. She's just not a dog person. Well, that didn't stop my sister from looking or hoping for a dog. She used to search online for her favourite breed(品种). Until one day Marni found some Cavapoo pups advertised for sale. She immediately showed Mummy and begged to go and see them. Not sure how my sister persuaded her, but to our surprise, Mummy said we could go and have a look at them but not to get high hopes. Marni rushed everyone in the car before Mummy changed her mind. Off we sped to the advertised breeder's house which luckily wasn't too far. We got to the house and I bet I could hear my sister's heart dancing with excitement. As we rang the doorbell, we could hear cute little barks coming from inside. We went in and saw lots of little black pups excitedly jumping around. There were other people there too, so we needed to choose one fast if you know what I mean. It was rather crowded but the breeder let us hold and cuddle(搂抱) the pups. The breeder handed a little confident pup to Marni. The little pup seemed an old friend with my sister. But after a lot of cuddles, Mummy said we had to go and would have to think about it.

7 . The pupils of Grangetown High have been busy getting to know their newest and tallest classmate — a 7-meter-tall giraffe outside their school.

The giraffe is a huge sculpture (雕像). The school’s headmaster noticed it in an artist’s garden as he drove past one day, and thought it would be perfect for his school. “I knew everyone would love it,” he said, “because our basketball team is known as the Grangetown Giraffes, and they wear giraffes on their shirts. So I asked them to write to the artist, asking how much it would cost to buy the giraffe. He was very kind and got it ready to deliver (递送) in six weeks — all for nothing! It was expected to arrive one Sunday morning, so that the pupils would see it when they got to school on Monday — at that time they had no idea that we were getting it.”

The artist, Tom Bennett was a university professor of chemistry before he retired in 2012 and only took up metalwork a couple of years ago. “I’ve always drawn pictures,” he said. I wanted it to be the best horse picture ever, but I don’t think I succeeded.” Tom’s first metalwork was a bicycle on which he and his wife could go cycling together, “It was the most uncomfortable bike ever created,” he said, “so I gave up making bicycles and went into sculpture instead.”

Meanwhile the pupils at Grangetown High are very happy with their new classmate. “We’re going to hold a competition to give it a proper name,” said one girl. “Everyone likes the expression on its face, so perhaps that will give us some ideas.”
