Hector stood in the front of his classroom as one of the last two competitors in the Class Five Geography Competition. His opponent having missed the last question, it was Hector’s turn. If he answered his question correctly, he would be the champion of Class Five.
“Where did I put that second sheet of questions?” Mr. Adler whispered while searching through a thick pile of papers on his messy desk. Mr. Adler, though a great teacher, had a reputation of being disorganized with a long history of misplacing things. “Oh well, I apologize for the delay.” said Mr. Adler after what seemed like a long time. “Hector, please tell us the capital city of Brazil.” Hearing the question, Hector smiled. Then, there was the answer.
Later that day in the courtyard, many classmates congratulated Hector. Wearing a proud smile, he greeted and thanked them all. Oh, the sweet taste of victory.
As it was getting late, the courtyard became deserted. But Hector still didn’t want to leave. Then he saw Mr. Adler crossing the courtyard and holding a half-open bag full of papers. As he hurried past, an envelope dropped out but Mr. Adler was unaware. He turned a corner and disappeared out of sight. Hector picked it up. On the envelope were the words “School Geography Competition Questions and Answers”. Hector stared wide-eyed at the envelope. Before he even had time to reflect on the consequences, he opened it and read the questions.
As soon as Hector had done it, he knew it was the wrong choice. He’d cheated and whatever he did now, he couldn’t change the fact. “What if Mr. Adler thought I stole this morning’s questions too?” Hector thought. “He’d take away my Class Five victory for sure.” Little did he know that one of the best days in his life would be turned into the worst so quickly. Torn by his conscience(良知), Hector was totally at a loss what to do.

3 . Hugh Lyon and David Lawrence have been riding together for years. They have both lived in Falkirk, Scotland their whole lives, but didn’t meet until they got involved in Cycling Without Age. “Despite the fact that we’re 20 years apart in age, roughly, we both went to the same secondary school,” said Lyon, 74.
The 56-year-old Lawrence serves as a “pilot”, driving the trishaw — a bike with a passenger seat in the front that Cycling Without Age uses for their rides. They go for rides about once a week, often discussing the history of their town.
“It gives me a connection with people from an older generation,” said Lawrence. “Unfortunately, I’ve lost both my parents; they’re no longer with us. And for me, it gives that connection with older people and I enjoy spending time with them and hearing their stories.”
Ole Kassow, who founded Cycling Without Age, said that’s the power of the program. “The truly powerful thing about these bike rides is that they tie people and stories together to create new relationships,” Kassow said. “In my experience, friendships and the ability to form new relationships at any age are what define a good life, and often also a long and happy life.”
Kassow started Cycling Without Age in Copenhagen in 2012, but there are now 2, 700 chapters in 52 countries.
John Seigel Boettner started the Santa Barbara chapter. He has one rule for passengers. “They ask, ‘If I’m going to go for a ride, what’s it going to cost?’ I say, ‘Here’s what it costs: It costs, you have to wave. If you don’t wave, I’m going to kick you out,’” he joked.
Boettner said, “When you take a 101-year-old woman for a bike ride and she holds your hand tightly and says thank you and gives you a kiss on the cheek, it doesn’t get any better than that.”

I love persimmons (柿子). A few years ago, ready to fly from San Francisco to Boston, I packed two persimmons, one of which I ate in the waiting room. A lady asked me from which store in the airport the fruit was bought. She looked a bit disappointed hearing that it couldn’t be bought from any store in this airport. I thought to myself, “I can give the second persimmon away.” When I offered her the fruit, at first she refused, but when I insisted (坚持), she became glad and accepted. I felt happy to make someone else happy, and I thought it was the end of the story.
Sometime during the flight, the lady met me in the aisle (过道) and thanked me again. She shared that she had grown up in Russia, where there was a persimmon tree in the yard of her childhood home. She now lived in Boston, where she hadn’t been able to find the fruit. The taste of the persimmon was valuable to her, reconnecting her with memories of her family.

6 . The most valuable thing I ever lost was a pair of diamond earrings I bought many years ago at a charity auction (拍卖会). Though very beautiful, they were heavy and turned out to be painful to wear. I wrote about the lost earrings in my new children’s book, The Christmas Pig. When they reach the Land of the Lost, where the hero must go to rescue his most beloved toy, my earrings are angry that they aren’t treated with the respect they think they deserve. They soon find out that being made of diamonds counts for very little in the strange world where human-made objects go when lost, because a thing’s importance there depends on how much it’s truly loved.
The Christmas Pig explores a deep attachment to an old object. It’s about the journey of a boy, Jack, who is a little lost himself but discovers his bravery and ability to love in a strange world. Of all the books I’ve written, this is the one that made me cry the most, because I was dealing with emotions that run deep in all of us. Loss and change are hard for children, and acceptance of these unavoidable parts of life isn’t much easier for adults. The Christmas Pig shows how human beings-even small, lost ones-are capable of wonderful, heroic acts.
A very strange thing happened on the day I finished editing The Christmas Pig. After emailing the final version to my editor, I set about clearing out a cupboard. The last object I picked up was a small box. I opened it. There were my long-lost diamond earrings. I’ve decided to sell them and give the money to a charity. I think it will be a nice ending for my earrings’ story to have them do some good for children in the Land of the Living.
How many times have I been asked whether I believe in magic? On the day I finished The Christmas Pig, for a few shining moments, I really did.
1. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text?A.To advertise her first children’s book. | B.To reveal our attachment to old objects. |
C.To tell a story happening in a strange world. | D.To introduce her new book and the story behind it. |
A.A boy discovered bravery in the real world. | B.A boy was weighed down by some earrings. |

A.The boy dealt with loss and change bravely. |
B.It was based on her own past experiences. |
C.She was unable to forgive herself. |
D.Many adults could hardly understand the main character. |
A.Magic in books can happen in real life. | B.Sometimes warm magic can happen in life. |
C.We should donate to help those in need. | D.Lost things will turn up sooner or later. |
One afternoon after school, Mary and her brother, Keith, were eating at a cafe near their home. That afternoon, they had to share their table with another person. That person was a young lady in her twenties. After eating, she went to the restroom. Without realizing, she had left her cellphone on the table. Five minutes later, she came out and walked out of the cafe without looking back.
Mary saw the cellphone on the table. She quickly told Keith, “Keith, the girl left behind her cellphone.”Keith looked at the cellphone. It took his breath away. It was one of the latest models on the market. Keith had always wanted a cellphone. But his parents had told him, “You don’t need one. You can always use the house phone.” He stared at it for some minutes. Then, he said slowly, pausing on every word, “I want to take the cellphone.” Mary could not believe her ears. She only stared at her brother, “You can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it?”
After making the decision, Keith quickly got the cellphone and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Mary’s hand and led her out of the cafe quickly.
Once back home, Keith locked his room door with trembling (颤抖的) hands. Inside his room, he took out the piece of beauty. Oh, he liked it so much. He had his own cellphone. Soon, he was polishing it happily. But Mary told him, “Keith, you cannot keep the cellphone. What will you tell our father about this? He will ask you how you got the cellphone.” Keith said quickly, “I will say a friend lent it to me.” Mary said, “Now you are lying too. Oh dear! When had Keith turned so dishonest?”
Then, Mary saw a house phone number on the cover of the cellphone. “This is the girl’s phone number. Why don’t we just call this number? We will talk to her and ask her to come and take back her cellphone,” she was trying to talk some sense into him.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________In a house far from the city lived John and his mother. John’s only hobby was wandering in the nearby picturesque forest. In its center was a shiny clear lake with schools of fish dancing in it. Lovely animals such as deer or rabbits were playing around and cute birds were singing in trees. Fascinated by the beauty and liveliness of nature, he desired to become a great artist and present all the breath-taking scenes to the world.
John studied in the local primary school. Life was not easy for John and his mom after his father died. Knowing what hard work his mother did to make ends meet, John really didn’t want his mother to worry. His mother knew the significance of education in life but she was against his dream of becoming an artist. “The profession of artist can’t aid a person in meeting his daily expenses,” she would say. But as each day passed, John’s dream became more passionate.
Due to the living circumstances, even buying some new colors would be a luxury. John only used the worn drawing file and limited colors for his daily practice. Though lacking fine painting materials, he never gave up drawing. He spent a significant amount of time staying in the forest, secretly perfecting his craft. With continuous hard work and a distinct gift for art, he drew beautifully.
One day John read about a competition being held in the town, whose deadline was only two days away. He got the perfect opportunity to fulfill his desire but he was in a dilemma (两难境地) as for the competition he needed special paints and some brushes. He didn’t have the courage to ask his mother for money as he knew her prejudice against art.
That evening his mom returned from work and handed him a few paper notes, saying, “This is for your lunch at school next month.” The money was enough for his desired materials! John’s face lit up.

After lunch when I was chatting with him and his wife Cody, he asked me, “Hey, Thora, have you ever been to a secret spot?” Before I could even finish saying no, Cody and Mark were already at the door with their jackets on. And the next moment we were heading out into the forest with a camera, a fishing net and a plastic bucket (桶).
We walked through the forest along a path by a small river. Breathing the fresh air, we three talked and laughed all the way.
“Hey! What are you guys doing ?” someone suddenly shouted from behind. Mark and Cody’s eyes immediately widened, and without a word they started running. I had no choice but to follow them, getting my shoes wet and dirty with mud. We probably ran for about 10 minutes before Mark and Cody slowed down. I stopped to catch my breath and asked, “Who was that?”
Mark replied, “The most annoying neighbor ever. There’s no telling what could happen if he caught up with us. He is always making fun of us. I dislike him.” We kept walking on for a few more minutes. Then a beautiful lake appeared before our eyes. “Wow! Amazing!” I shouted and could hardly hold back my excitement. The lake was large and the water was deep and blue, looking so peaceful with tall trees around it.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Most people have an experience that they will never forget. For pilots Dave McMahon and Sydnie Uemoto, it involved a plane crash, and an ocean, which made them realize the meaning of life and cooperation.
As the twin-engine Piper Apache flew 5,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean, 23-year-old pilot Sydnie Uemoto and her co-pilot, 26-year-old Dave McMahon, heard the strange sound of the engines.
Then, without warning, the pilots lost power to the right engine. A moment later, the left one went.
At about 1,000 feet and falling quickly, Uemoto made their last call. “We’re 25 miles northwest of Kona,” she said to air traffic control. “We’re going down.”
Then everything flashed white as the plane struck the surface of the ocean. McMahon and Uemoto were thrown forward violently.
“Sydnie, get out !”McMahon called.
As the plane sank, they jumped into the ocean. Within seconds, the plane disappeared beneath the surface.
As the waves broke around them, McMahon and Ulemoto had done the impossible by suriving a crash landing into the ocean. Now they just had to stay put, swimming in the warm sea.
“When will the Coast Guard get here?” Uemoto asked.
“They’re coming,” McMahon said.
After a couple of hours, McMahon’s prediction seemed to come true. A Navy plane appeared in the sky, circling the area. It flew directly overhead as McMahon waved his life preserver (救生用具) overjoyed at the sight. However, the plane continued on its way without spotting them.
As the sun grew dark, McMahon became scared. He thought they were going to have to spend the night on the water.
“Hey, Dave?” Uemoto said softly at one point.
“Hey, Sydnie,” he called back.
When the sun rose that morning, the two pilots were greeted by a beautiful sight.
