1 . My 12-year-old niece was staying with us for a couple of days. She was remembering some acts of kindness that we did together when she was less than five years old. We talked about how so much had changed, and with the pandemic, how difficult it would be to do so many of those things, especially when it comes to strangers.

The next day, I needed something from the downtown area and happened to take her with me. As we walked

around on the street, we heard a beautiful male voice singing a very soulful song. We turned around to see a middle-aged man sitting on a street comer with his guitar. A couple were sitting on a bench nearby and listening to his music.

After getting a few things done, we happened to sit at an outdoor dining restaurant across from him on the other side of the street. My niece was learning how to sing herself, and she kept smiling and saying how wonderful his singing was. Seeing how moved she was by his music, at the end of our meal, I gave her a ten-dollar bill and asked her to walk across the street and put it in his bowl.

She was a little surprised. “Really?” she asked with bright eyes. I nodded. So she headed over and as she approached, the man was just finishing a song and started talking to her, and they ended up having a sweet conversation. She told him how touched she was by his music, and he ended up telling her that she made his day. As she was excitedly repeating the conversation back to me, she mentioned, “He didn’t even know how much it was. He was just thankful that someone was enjoying his music.”

2 . A teacher in New York decided to carry out a project with her class to see how it would influence their community if they honored people for making a difference or recognized them for doing a good thing.

She gave each of her students three blue ribbons (丝带) with gold letters which read,“Who I Am Makes a Difference.” Then she instructed each student to go out and give a ribbon to a person as a way to thank them for doing something good. Afterwards, they were to follow up on the results, see who honored whom, and report back to the class in about a week.

One of the boys in the class went to a manager in a nearby company and honored him for helping him with his career planning. Then, he gave him two extra ribbons and asked him to do the same with someone that he wanted to honor or thank.

Later that day, the manager went to see his boss, who had been seen as a bad-tempered man. He told him that he deeply admired him for being a creative genius. The boss seemed very surprised. The manager asked him if he would accept the gift of the blue ribbon. The boss said, “Well, sure.” Then he gave him the last extra ribbon and said he hoped he could pass it on to somebody else.

That night, the boss came home to his 14-year-old son and said, “The most incredible thing happened to me today. One of the managers gave me an extra ribbon and asked me to find somebody else to honor. As I was driving home tonight, I started thinking about whom I would honor with this ribbon, and I thought about you. Sometimes, I scream at you for not getting good enough grades in school, but you are the most important person in my life. And I love you!”

Hearing this, the boy couldn’t stop crying. He looked up at his father and said through his tears, “Dad, I was going to run away from home after you were asleep. But now I don’t need to.”

5 . Over the years, you've probably known a good number of people-some for only a short period and others for a much longer time. If you spend a moment thinking back on the people who have meant the very most to you, selflessness will be the same thing they share. There might have been a person who really believed in you. Someone taught you something important. Someone cared for you in his or her own way. Someone has simply always remained your friend.

Many years ago, I traveled through the beautiful, history-rich country of Greece. With only a small backpack, I stayed at youth hotels, visiting city after city. One day, a shoulder strap on my backpack broke. I didn't speak any Greek and the owner didn't speak any English. I went to the front desk of my hotel and tried to ask him if there might be a shop nearby where I could have it repaired. He was clearly very busy. But he asked someone to watch over the front desk and then signed to me to follow him. We walked together for a few blocks, arriving at a little shoe repair shop. Within ten minutes, my backpack was repaired, and then the hotel owner insisted on paying for it!

I was shocked by this powerful, unexpected kindness.   More than any other thing, it's what I recall most often when I think about my trip to Greece. Sometimes, you may not have even realized how much your selflessness toward someone has mattered. As the saying goes, "To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world."

1. What's wrong with the author's backpack? ________
A.One of its shoulder straps was broken.B.It was got dirty by a cleaner.
C.One of its pockets was broken.D.There was a hole in it.
2. Which word can best describe the hotel owner? ________
A.Mean.B.Warm-hearted.C.Clever.D.Humorous.
3. What can we learn about the author from the last paragraph? ________
A.He became a lifelong friend of the hotel owner.B.He spent all his money in travelling in Greece.
C.He picked up Greek while travelling in Greece.D.He'll never forget the hotel owner's kindness.
4. What's the author's main purpose of writing the text? ________
A.To show his love of travelling.B.To explore the value of selflessness.
C.To give a short introduction to Greece.D.To introduce a shoe repair shop in Greece.

About 9 o'clock last night, I am doing my homework. Sudden I heard my neighbor shout and laughing loudly. He was watching the football game on TV. I couldn't go on studying and become impatient. I covered my ear, trying to keep the noise out, and it was no use. So I had to go to my neighbor’s house. I knocked at door and said, "Good evening, Mr Yang! Could you please turn down your TV a bit? I am doing my homework." "Oh, I'm really sorry to have disturbed with you. We’ll do like you say" My neighbor said politely. "Thank you very much." I said and went back to continue my study.
