1 . Dentler was born in Mumbai, India in I978 and contracted polio (小儿麻痹症) at six months. At the age of three and a half, she was adopted by a couple in the US. She says, “I spent the first few years in America just going through a number of surgeries to basically straighten me out so I could then be fitted for leg braces and crutches.”
“In the early years, it was just me trying to be like my sisters,” she says. “I didn’t want to take the disabled bus to school. I wanted to be able to take the bus with my sisters. And so I had to learn how to go up the stairs.”
Later, when she was in her late 20s in New York City, a friend introduced her to a running club for athletes with disabilities where she learned how to use a handcycle (手动自行车): Push a three-wheeled low-to-the-ground bike using only her upper body.
Within seven months, she learned to swim and to compete using a racing wheelchair. When Dentler finished the triathlon (铁人三项赛), she was motivated to go farther. She soon took up half-Ironman distance triathlons, a distance of nearly 70 miles. And she kept meeting people, mostly able-bodied, with extraordinary athletic ambitions, which led her to attempt her first Ironman in Hawaii. That’s a distance of 140.6 miles.
“At the time, no female wheelchair athlete had ever made the time by the deadline to finish that race,” Dentler says. She missed the finish line on her first try. But a year later, in her second competition, she made it and finished the race in 14 hours and 39 minutes — the first female wheelchair athlete to complete the Ironman World Championship. She covered all those miles in water and on land, pushed entirely by her arms and upper body. She says, “I think it’s important to stay physically active.”
Now, she’s a mom. Dentler volunteered at the school to help kids learn to read. “The kids were very curious. They asked me a ton of questions and it was actually pretty fun to answer them. And the kids’ eyes would get really big when they heard that could do all of these things.”

I was sharing an interesting story with my best friend Alisa and turned around in the dining room. Suddenly, I heard the sound of glass breaking.
When I looked down at the floor, it was filled with pieces of colorful glass. Alisa said. “Oh, no, not the vase.”
“Why? What did I do?” My face turned red.
“Lucy, that glass vase was what my uncle brought from China when they came to England,” Alisa said nervously. “If you’d broken anything else in the room, I would have gladly said I did it. But this time you’d better tell my daddy that it was your fault, and he’s going to be really crazy.”
I was terrified. I’d broken a priceless family vase. Why did I turn around like that?
We collected the glass pieces. I kept saying that maybe it could be repaired, but Alisa said gently it was impossible.
Alisa said her daddy would be home by seven. My head was in blank. Would her daddy shout at me or punish me? Would he tell me I couldn’t play with Alisa any more? I couldn’t stop thinking for a thousand results in my mind. However, the only thing I could think of to say was “I’m sorry.”

A small boy was packing his school bag in his room, a room filled with books. Many were novels and some were short stories; many were new and some were yellowed with age; many were detective stories and some were fairy tales. Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. The small boy called Frank turned his wheelchair (轮椅) to his right and slowly opened the door. As usual it was his mom, who wanted Frank to get ready for school. Frank had his breakfast, said goodbye to his mom and started his travel to the school in his wheelchair. Frank had lost his leg when he was eight in an accident. He had to spend the rest of the life in the wheelchair. But the accident did not take away his trust in life, and he wanted to be a writer. His mother also supported his dream. Frank had not wanted to go to the school for the handicapped (残疾人). So he had joined an ordinary school.
On the way to school, he met his loving and kind-hearted friend, Lawrence. Lawrence wheeled his friend quickly and talked with him happily. He told Lawrence that there would be a story competition next week. Lawrence encouraged him to take part in it. Lawrence said, “Trust yourself. You can make it!” They reached the school in thirty minutes. Lawrence said bye to Frank and they both went to their classes.
Slowly days passed, and the Formative Exams started. They ended within a week. “Frank, the score is 100,”said the class teacher cheerfully. Frank was very happy because he had scored full marks. He wheeled his chair and again met Lawrence on the way. This time both stopped on the side and Lawrence said, “Try to take part in the story competition.” “OK, thank you, Lawrence,” said Frank excitedly. He rushed home, and wrote something on a piece of paper. His mom was very happy to see her son cheerful and excited. Actually he was going to write a short story to take part in the competition. But he didn’t know how to finish it.

My name is Linh. I am a woman with physical disability. Whenever asked about my diability, my answer remains the same: “I was born with a disability on my right leg. That’s all to it.” In fact, no disability can define me. I want to define the person I am by what I do — I am an advocate (倡导者) for people with disabilities.
My parents were right when they managed to bring me up in an environment where I was always among friends without disabilities. This made me think, “I am different from my friends, but that doesn’t mean I can’t do what they can. I can do things in my own way.”
Having been in an inclusive (包容的) education system. I can see both opportunities and barriers it brings 10 personal development for girls with disabilities. With this experience. I desire to work towards removing the barriers to ensure chances for people with disabilities to fully and equally participate in our society.
At the end of high school. I was at the crossroads when I had to decide the major I would pursue in college. “I plan to choose Law,” I said.
Most of the responses I received were countering: “You should be practical. Choose something less challenging that would help you earn a stable living.” “Many people without disabilities are still unemployed, let alone you with disability!” Self-doubt led me to the decision to apply for both my desired major and the safe choice that I had been told of. In the end. when the heart called — I chose to follow my dream.
The reason was simple. I was not confident that I would find a job upon graduation, but I held a strong belief that I would never be happy doing what I was told to do. I am and will be the only person responsible for my life.

The event that stands out in Tom’s memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old.He was at home with his elder sister Jane.Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.
“Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop.” someone shouted. Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate,a thick cloud of smoke greeted him.The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor (走廊) through the smoke.
They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane suddenly stopped in her track. She turned around and headed back the way they came.Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.
Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Makcik.Jane began banging on Makcik’s door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them,Tom could see many of their neighbors—some still in their pajamas (睡衣)—running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.
“She would have run for safety like everyone else!” Tom cried. However,Jane refused to give up.“I know Makcik’s still inside.” She said she was familiar with Makcik’s daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded against the door.“Go downstairs.Go now! Go!”

I grew up with a four-year gap between myself and my younger brother. It was a distance in age to keep us close as we got older, but also an age gap to make sure we lived our own lives in completely different ways. Having a younger brother while I was a girl was a lot of work, for there was a lot of fighting.
However, as we’ve got older, we’ve become closer, and I’ve learned several things in life from my younger brother that I didn’t realize I needed before.
My younger brother is one of the most talented and creative souls I’ve known. He’s continually feeding his creativity with new art forms and new instruments. He always seeks to understand and learn more about the world around him. He’s helped remind me through his actions and words that giving up on creativity is something a person should never do.
My younger brother has also been through hard times, but he’s able to focus on learning from the hard times, unlike me, who tends to hold on to every little thing from my life. It’s always been difficult for me to let things go and move on, but my younger brother has been an inspiration for me to try harder at letting go.
My younger brother has always been a more introverted type, and if you speak to him, you’re lucky to get over three words out of him at a time. Because of this, he’s certainly learned the whole “actions speak louder than words” thing. But, I’ve realized from my brother that I needn’t speak to fill the silence. Sometimes, it’s necessary to spend some of your time in silence and reflect in it.

10 . 71 years after starting college, a 90-year-old woman, Joyce Viola DeFauw, was graduating this year. She first entered college in 1951, studying early education, and later, home economics. She left school after three and a half years due to marriage.
The mom of nine, who is now also a grandmother to 17 and great-grandmother to 26, was busy through the years but never forgot about college.“I must have told the children that I wish I had finished back in the 1950s,” DeFauw recalled. “They suggested that I go back and I thought ‘Well, OK.’” Since the pandemic began in 2019, instead of walking to campus to attend classes, she did so behind a computer screen from her retirement home.“I needed a computer and they got one for me and so I’ve been able to use it and enjoy it.”
DeFauw re-entered Northern Illinois University (NIU) in August 2019 and began to take online courses toward a bachelor’s degree (学士学位) in general studies. Although there were times when she struggled with the courses and even thought about giving up, DeFauw kept doing schoolwork almost every day. “We get to exchange ideas and things through the computer and I’ve had wonderful instructors that guided me,” DeFauw said. “As far as the encouragement of everyone — my friends, my family and my teachers — I just can’t give up.”
Three years later, she put on the cap and gown and received a Bachelor of General Studies degree from the university. DeFauw felt very happy and thankful for being able to achieve her big milestone. NIU President Dr. Lisa Freeman praised DeFauw as an “inspiration” to others. “DeFauw is a pioneer and now a Northern Illinois University graduate,” Freeman said. “She has beautifully shown that earning a degree is never late at any age. For anyone still looking to realize your dreams, just go for it. There’s so much that life offers, and you will miss out on if you don’t take advantage of it.”
