Jack and Dane were great friends. Every evening they played together. They studied in the same class in the same school. They were good students.
One evening, Jack and Dane were playing with a ball. After a while, Jack said, “I am so bored. Shall we go for fishing in the river?” “That is a great idea.” replied Dane.
Jack called out to his mother, “Mama, we are going fishing in the river, okay?”
“Okay,” Jack’s mother said, “but be careful not to get into the water. Your father said there are crocodiles in the river.”
Both the children said that they would not get into the river. They gathered their fishing lines with the hooks (钩), and a can full of fish food. They headed to the river, and soon began fishing.
However, even after a long time, they did not get any fish. They began to feel bored again. “This river looks not so deep. Why does mother say not to swim here?” asked Jack.
“Remember, your mother said there are crocodiles here.” said Dane.
“Well, I don’t find any.” said Jack.
Dane was quiet for a while. Finally he asked, “Do you think we can swim?”
Jack jumped up and shouted excitedly, “Yes, let us swim. Come on, dive.”
The two friends dove in, and splashed (泼水) around happily. They found some logs of wood floating on the river, and tried floating with them. It was then that something unexpected happened.
Dane was playing with a log of wood, and suddenly, the log was caught in a strong current (水流), and he was hit in the head. He became unconscious immediately.

Walking into and volunteering at an orphanage (孤儿院) for the first time, I was filled with a mix of excitement and nervousness.
As a half-Filipino, I felt a sense of pride and joy to be back in the country where my family was from, but I wasn’t sure what to expect from my time there. Would I be able to connect with the kids? Would I be able to make a meaningful impact? These were the thoughts running through my mind as I walked through the gate.
When I arrived, I was greeted by a group of shy and curious children. They looked out from behind doors and around corners, eyeing me carefully as I made my way through the halls. I was struck by their shyness, and I couldn’t help but feel a bit nervous myself.
I was a stranger in their home, and I knew that it would take time to earn their trust and build a connection with them.
However, as days went by and I spent more time with the kids, I began to see their walls come down. They started to open up to me, sharing stories and jokes, and even asking me to join in their games.
Soon enough, they welcomed me into their home with open arms, quite naturally. From that point on, I had a kid attached to me at all times. They were always eager to hold hands, give hugs, and jump on my back whenever I wasn’t looking. It was hard to believe that these same children had once been so guarded and distant.
These were kids who had experienced more hardship and trauma (创伤) in their young lives than most people could even imagine. And yet, they still found reasons to smile and laugh every day. They were incredibly stubborn and strong-willed, which could be challenging at times, but it also gave them a strong sense of perseverance.

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks.
One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn't until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali's running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.

6 . Growing up, I never wore makeup and I was always more afraid of the mirror than anything else. I hadn't thought makeup was meant for me, a disabled woman, until I saw Ulta's new advertisement:a huge full-color photo of a model in a wheelchair.
The world of fashion and beauty is rarely related to disabilities, and even though Hollywood has made steps toward greater inclusion and clothing brand Aerie has featured women with disabilities in their advertisements, seeing disabilities in the mainstream is definitely unusual. The reason why these things make headlines is that they're so rare.
I learned from a very young age that because of my disability, I would never be connected with beauty or charm. I'd spent so long feeling separated from so many parts of society, but Ulta is sending a powerful message with a single photo: It's time to challenge conventional beauty standards because beauty comes in all forms.
We all want to feel included. When it comes to disabilities, it is so important, especially for children and teens with disabilities. I was well into my 30s when I rolled into a makeup store for the first time. I had no idea what I was doing and felt like entering a new world without a map; I felt like I was out of place, as if I was peeking at a club without being invited. Imagine how my experience would have been different if I had seen a model in a wheelchair, smiling, as if to say, “Welcome. Yes, you belong!”
That message of inclusion was loud and clear for Maren Anderson, a 4-year-old girl who has a rare genetic disease and just started using a wheelchair. The moment she spotted the advertisement was caught on camera by her mom Carolyn Anderson, and quickly spread last month on Facebook. “It's just really saying that she feels included, and she feels like she identifies with that, and belongs here just like everybody else. So, thank you, Ulta,” said Carolyn Anderson.

We’re driving along a road and saw a piece of card saying: “Bungee Jumping, 5km” and an arrow pointing to the left. I couldn’t even see a road going left and there was no sign of any bungee jumping, but you insisted.
“We don’t have to do the bungee jumping, we can just go there and see what’s happening. It’ll be interesting!” As usual, you got your way. I gave in and off we went along this dirt road. After driving for ages, suddenly some trees appeared like a small wood. “This must be the place,” you said. We pulled over. As soon as we’re out of car, we heard voices of people shouting and laughing. It sounded like they’re having a good time. In the middle of the wood there were some people. They’re polite and friendly, but I felt like we’re interrupting.
Once there had been a river, but now there was just a dry ditch. A metal bridge crossed the ditch. The bridge didn’t look too stable. I thought the kids had built it. The kids were in the middle of the bridge. They’re all leaning over and looking down into the ditch. They’re shouting and laughing. Another person was hanging from a long piece of elastic rope in the middle of the ditch. He was laughing madly. The other people slowly pulled him up to the bridge. As the guy came to the top he looked shocked but also very happy.
“I want to do that!” you said. And you knew what I wanted to say: What will happen if the rope breaks? I didn’t say it, but I was thinking it. I didn’t say anything, because I knew that you wouldn’t have answers for any of my questions. You’ve always been a lot more adventurous than me.

A young man was on his way to the office when a nurse called him and told him that his father was injured and in hospital. So he hurried to go to the hospital by taxi. After he went into the hospital, he found that he left his cell phone in the taxi, but the taxi had left. The worse thing was that he had forgotten to ask the nurse which ward his father was in. He had to scurry around in the hospital, looking for his father. Seeing a nurse, he asked her anxiously, ”My father is in hospital. He..”
The nurse interrupted him, “Oh, my God. It’s you. Come with me!” She led the anxious young man to the bed side of an elderly man. “Your son is here,” she whispered to the elderly patient. The old patient’s eyes opened only after she repeated the words several times. The old man was too weak so it was really hard for him to stay awake and he could vaguely (模糊地) see the young man standing beside him.
The old man reached out his hand with all his strength and the young man realized it and immediately held it.
The nurse brought a chair for the young man to sit beside the bed. The young man sat holding the old man’s hand and offering him words of love and strength, all through the night. The dying old man said nothing. The nurse suggested that the young man move away and rest for a while but he refused. He stayed.
As dawn approached, the old man peacefully died. The young man placed the lifeless hand on the bed and informed the nurse. While the nurse did what was necessary, the young man waited. When she finished her task, the nurse began to say words of sympathy the young man needed.
