1 . There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved.

I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not particularly relish the long train journey and had brought along a dozen magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I sighed and sat down to read my Economics.

It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately I came alive; I decided to wave back.

From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time.

The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful. When my uncle arrived with a smile, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug (拥抱). I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his weather-beaten face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car.

I looked forward to the return journey.

C.prepare forD.carry on
4. What can we learn from the story?
A.Comfort in traveling by train.B.Pleasure of living in the country.

3 . The wind is cold and raindrops fall. Bill Porter pays little attention to the bad weather. He’s a door-to-door salesman. With heavy steps, he stops at the first house. He rings the bell. A young woman comes to the door. “Hello.” “No, thank you.” She shuts the door. Porter’s expression never changes. People might not buy now. Next time. Maybe.

He makes his way up and down the hills. His bag is heavy. His hand hurts. His brain was damaged when he was born, which caused a disorder to his nervous system that affected his speech, hands and walk.

He walks on. He knocks on a door. A man walks out from the back yard where he’s gardening. He often buys, but not today, he says, as he walks away. Then Porter is on his way. No sale. No sale. No sale.

Finally, a middle-aged woman invites Porter inside. They chat easily about what has recently happened in the neighborhood. After a few minutes, Porter takes off his hat and raincoat and sets them on a chair. Out come the glasses and the brochures.

“We have a new kind of pepper (甜椒).” “No.” “Hot spices (调味香料)?” “No.” “All natural, pure pasta toppings (意面浇料).” He looks at the customer. She’s teetering and just needs a push.

“Sure would make a nice gift.” He studies her face, searching for clues as to what she needs to hear. “Nothing man-made.” “Really? How much is a set?” she asks. “$22.99, and they go a long way.” “OK, I’ll give it a try.”

Porter removes his glasses and places everything in his bag. He pulls on his coat and hat and follows the woman to the front door. He turns to her and says, “And I thank you.”

He arrives home after 7 p. m. Today was not profitable. He tells himself not to worry. Four days left in the week. He eats at the kitchen table and listens to the radio. He hears the rain pound on the street. He must dress warmly tomorrow. Soon he’s sleepy with great care he climbs the stairs (楼梯) to his bedroom. In time, the lights go off. Morning will be here soon.

4 . In school we learned about Earth. We learned that rivers flow from higher ground to lower ground. They usually end at a bigger river or go into a lake or ocean.

I can see that every day in Chicago. Our river goes into the lake. It’s a giant lake. We used to go fishing on the river every summer. Most days you would find me and my grandfather there, fishing. My father was busy working for the city. I did not know what his job was. He said it was in the Sanitary and Ship Canal.

My grandfather would take me to the river. “In the old days,” he said, “this was a clean stream. Now look at it. It is filthy. Sometimes we even saw dead fish floating on it.”

When we brought the fish home, my mother would throw them out. “We can’t eat this. This is dirty, bad fish.” She sounded angry. So my grandfather and I stopped bringing the fish home. Sometimes we would go to fish and throw them back. But mostly we just stayed at home. We were sad about it.

Then one day my father was so busy he was not home. That New Year’s Day he worked, too. My mother was worried. “ It is too cold.” But he went anyway. Then two days later the newspaper said, “It is a miracle!” That was the headline. I read the article.

It told how the workers on the Sanitary and Ship Canal had done something impossible. They had reversed the Chicago River. They dug such a great hole that the river rushed away from the lake. It now went to the west. I was so excited. So was my grandfather. He said, “Now we can go fishing this summer.”

We both laughed. So did my mother. My father smiled a lot, all day long.

9 . Fifty years ago I had a young family of three boys. My husband Johnny and I left them with a friend while we made a rare trip to the cinema in Liverpool.

It was dark and pouring with rain but with the headlights shining on the road, we saw something ahead of us. Johnny pulled to a stop and I jumped out, ran to the grass edge and grabbed a small, wet, and frightened creature. I wrapped it safely in my woollen hat and insisted that my husband turn back and head for home. We thought it was a baby rabbit because it had long ears and was grayish-brown in colour. Once home, we filled a box with torn-up newspaper and a warm towel. We named our new animal Bobsy as we had no idea of its sex.

Sadly though, on the third day with us, it caught its back foot in a door and we quickly realised it was broken. We rushed to the vet(兽医), who said, “It’s only a rabbit, I’ll put it to sleep.” Our response was a very determined, “No way !”We found anther vet and told that she was a baby hare. We were told we should continue to keep her in her box for a week and her foot would heal.

After her recovery, Bobsy learnt to use the kitty litter tray. She would comb her long ears with her front paws. The local paper heard about this and came to our house to take her photo and write a story about her. We had her for seven wonderful years before we moved to New Zealand and we will never forget her.
