文章大意:这是一篇记叙文,文章主要讲述登山者Joe Simpson在被冰雪覆盖的山上膝盖受伤并掉进冰隙,在困难重重的情况下,他保持冷静,设法尝试自救的励志故事。

1 . In June 1985, two British mountaineers Joe Simpson and Simon Yates made the first-ever climb of the West Face of the 21,000 foot snow-covered Siula Grande mountain in Peru. It was exceptionally tough — but nothing compared to what was to come. Early in the descent (斜坡), Simpson fell and broke his right knee. Yates could have abandoned him but managed to find a way of lowering him down the mountain in a series of difficult drops blinded by snow and cold. Then Simpson fell into a crevasse (冰隙) and Yates eventually had no choice but to cut the rope, utterly convinced that his friend was now dead.

In his subsequent book on the climb entitled “Touching The Void”, Joe Simpson wrote: “As I gazed at the distant moraines (冰碛石), I knew that I must at least try. I would probably die out there amid those rocks. The thought didn’t alarm me. It seemed reasonable, matter-of-fact. That was how it was. I could aim for something. If I died, well, that wasn’t so surprising, but I wouldn’t have just waited for it to happen. The horror of dying no longer affected me as it had in the crevasse. I now had the chance to confront it and struggle against it. My leg would hurt when I fell and when I couldn’t get up I would die.”

The survival of Simpson himself was extraordinary. That somehow found a way of climbing out of the crevasse after 12 hours and then dragged himself six miles back to camp, going three days and nights without food or drink, would be the stuff of heroic fiction if it was not so true. Indeed, six operations and two years later, he was even back climbing. All because, against all the odds, he tried.

1. What happened to Simpson?
A.He went blind in the accident.B.He was hurt for lack of the rope.
C.He had his knee injured in the descent.D.He was deserted into a crevasse on purpose.
2. What did Simpson do in the crevasse?
A.He tried to remove the rocks.B.He struggled for food and drink.
C.He thought about his dead friend.D.He stayed calm to rescue himself.
3. What does the underlined word “confront” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Face up to.B.Give way to.C.Get away with.D.Come up with.
4. What message does the text mainly convey?
A.No way is impossible to wisdom.B.Nothing is hard to the man who will try.
C.The good seaman is known in bad weather.D.Good company on the road is the shortest cut.

It was February 16, 2019, at 8a. m. when my girlfriend, Jessika McNeill, and I arrived at Utah’s Zion National Park. We’d traveled from our home in Mesa, Arizona, to hike the nine-mile-long Subway Track, so named because of its amazing tunnel-shaped canyon (峡谷). Halfway through our track, which included climbing over huge rocks and crossing streams, the sunshine gave way to a light snow. Soon after, we reached the walls of the Subway Track. A small pond stood in our way, with the track continuing on the other side. Because the pond looked shallow, we began to get through, with Jessika leading the way.

About five feet from the edge, her front foot sank into the sandy bottom. Then she fell forward and both legs started to sink. I rushed, grabbed her under the shoulders, and pulled her out of the muck (淤泥). She climbed back to shore. But now I was sinking. The muck came all the way up to my right leg and my left ankle. I freed my left leg but couldn’t move my right. Jess handed me a long stick we’d picked up earlier in the hike. I jammed it down the side of my leg and tried to move and pull it out. Nothing. I was stuck in quicksand.

Jessika started scooping (挖出) sand with both hands, but it was refilling faster than she could pull it out. ”Don’t bother,“ I told her. ”You’re just wasting your energy.“ While I was no longer sinking, I wasn’t getting out, either. We couldn’t call for help because there was no signal there. I told Jessika she had to hike back and seek help. She was scared-she had only ever hiked with me and was afraid of hiking alone on such a tough track. But we were out of options.

Raj learns a lesson

Raj is a middle-aged man. Although he was born in a poor family, he was raised well by his father and mother. His father owned a welding (焊接) shop, and used to work for more than 12 hours a day, so that his family could lead a comfortable life.

However, Raj’s father could not earn sufficient money to provide a decent life to his family. Raj was an average student in school, and used to score around 70 percent marks. Raj’s dream was to become a doctor. Since his marks weren’t very high, he could not get the desired course that he wanted to study. Instead, he joined a bachelor’s degree course, completed the course successfully, and got a job in a company.

In order not to depend on Raj, his father continued to work in his shop. After getting a permanent job, Raj’s parents wanted him to marry. He got married to a girl from his native town, and meanwhile was promoted in his job. After a few years, his wife gave birth to beautiful twin boys.

Later, Raj began to earn a handsome salary, and started to live luxuriously. He bought a new house and a new car. Some of the luxuries were really unnecessary. Almost 6 to 7 years later, Raj was neither able to manage all the household expenses, nor pay for the children’s education and other basic necessities.

It so happened that Raj’s father fell sick, and as a result, could not continue his work. He requested Raj to give some money for his treatment and other household expenses. Raj, who was already suffering from financial crisis, not only shouted at his parents but also complained to his parents, “You never give me what I needed and wanted and it took me more than 10 years to get settled. Now, while I am again struggling for money, you are not doing anything to help me, but instead are a burden to me! So, please don’t come to me again.”

His parents were left shocked.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章通过作者小时候学习舞蹈的经历,以及妈妈对她的支持和理解告诉父母们应该发现并培养孩子的天赋,而不是用所谓的教育把孩子推向平凡。

4 . When I was about six years old, my mother came home one day and found that I had collected half a dozen babies of the neighbourhood—all of them too young to walk—and had them sitting before me on the floor while I was teaching them to wave their arms. When she asked the explanation of this, I informed her that it was my school of dance. She was amused, and placing herself at the piano. She began to play for me. This school continued and became very popular. Later on, little girls of the neighbourhood came and their parents paid me a small sum to teach them. This was the beginning of what afterwards proved a very profitable occupation.

My mother took me to a famous ballet teacher, but his lessons did not please me. When the teacher told me to stand on my toes (脚趾) I asked him why, and when he replied “ Because it is beautiful, ” I said that it was ugly and against nature and after the third lesson I left his class, never to return. This stiff (僵硬) and commonplace gymnastics which he called dancing only disturbed my dream. I dreamed of a different dance. I did not know just what it would be, but I was feeling out towards an invisible world into which I guessed I might enter if I found the key.

My art was already in me when I was a little girl, and it was owing to the heroic and adventurous spirit of my mother that it was not prevented. I believe that whatever the child is going to do in life should be begun when it is very young. I wonder how many parents realize that by the so-called education they are giving their children, they are only driving them into the commonplace, and taking away from them any chance of doing anything beautiful or original.

1. What was the writer doing when her mother came home one day?
A.Teaching some babies to dance.B.Directing some babies to walk.
C.Getting some babies together.D.Making some babies sit still.
2. How did the writer find the ballet?
A.Old and unpopular.B.Ugly and unnatural.
C.Graceful and original.D.Dreamlike and gymnastic.
3. What did the writer think she owed her success in art to?
A.The ballet classes she had attended.B.Her inborn talent and great efforts.
C.The lucky chance her parents gave her.D.Her mother’s support and understanding.
4. What’s the main idea of the text?
A.Children should be encouraged to be educated as early as possible.
B.Children should be driven to develop their interest in art at an early age.
C.Parents should discover and develop their young children’s natural gift.
D.Parents should instruct their children to decide on a promising occupation.

8 . One December night, a long, long time ago, a family sat around the fireplace in their home. This family had found happiness in the worst place in all of New England. This family was never lonely. They enjoyed each other's company, and often had visitors. The family offered every traveler who stopped at their home a kindness that money could not buy.

On that December evening, someone knocked at their door. The oldest girl opened the door and found a young man standing in the dark.

The old grandmother put a chair near the fireplace for him. The oldest daughter gave him a warm, shy smile. And the baby held up its little arms to him. "This fire is just what I needed," the young man said. The wind has been blowing in my face for the last two hours.

When the father took the young man's travel bag, he said he was going to Vermont when he saw the light in the window. He decided to stop to sit and enjoy their fire and company for a while.

As the young man took his place by the fire, something like heavy footsteps was heard outside. It sounded as if someone was running down the side of the mountain, taking enormous steps. The father looked out one of the windows.

"That old mountain has thrown another stone at us again. He must have been afraid we would forget him. He sometimes shakes his head and makes us think he will come down on top of us," the father explained to the young man. "But we are old neighbors," he smiled. "And we manage to get along together pretty well. Besides, I have made a safe hiding place outside to protect us in case a slide brings the mountain down on our heads. "

As the father spoke, the mother prepared a hot meal for their guest. While he ate, he talked freely to the family, as if it were his own. This young man did not trust people easily. Yet on this evening, something made him share his deepest secret with these simple mountain people.

10 . How far would you go to make a good impression at a new job? A college student in Alabama walked 32 kilometers in the dark to get to his new job.

The story begins with Walter Carr's car breaking down the night before starting a new job. Carr was unable to find a ride. So, he figured out how long it would take to walk from his house to the job in Pelham-32 kilometers away.
