1 . Hiking in the mountains I met a young lady who wanted to pet my dog. While she played with him, I asked, “Do you have a dog of your own?” “He just died,” she said. She explained that as a child she got a little dog. They grew up together, went everywhere together and were best friends. She even took him to college though he was very old and couldn't get around well. And as he got worse, she stayed by him day and night thinking they would always be together.

But one day, while petting him, he growled(咆哮)and bit her hand. She was shocked. He never did that. How could he turn on her? Friends convinced her to put him to sleep. Unwillingly she did, but admitted that she hated herself ever since. “How could I kill my lifetime friend?” she sobbed.

“Suppose,” I said, “your dog was a genius! Suppose he knew you better than you know yourself. He didn't turn on you. You were too young to know about his getting old and needing to go. He knew you needed a helping hand to let him go. . . so he bit you. And it worked, didn't it?”

She was coming out of her deep sadness. I added, “Is it hard to imagine that dogs have late friends calling them to dog heaven? They never forget who they love. He is there. He still loves you more than ever. He knows you'll live a lot longer than he did.”

She was obviously happy now as she considered my words. We parted with a long hug and thanks. I'm pretty sure her dog was standing behind her, thanking me with his wagging tail and smiling face. Love is the highest kindness.

3 . My 12-year-old niece was staying with us for a couple of days. She was remembering some acts of kindness that we did together when she was less than five years old. We talked about how so much had changed, and with the pandemic, how difficult it would be to do so many of those things, especially when it comes to strangers.

The next day, I needed something from the downtown area and happened to take her with me. As we walked

around on the street, we heard a beautiful male voice singing a very soulful song. We turned around to see a middle-aged man sitting on a street comer with his guitar. A couple were sitting on a bench nearby and listening to his music.

After getting a few things done, we happened to sit at an outdoor dining restaurant across from him on the other side of the street. My niece was learning how to sing herself, and she kept smiling and saying how wonderful his singing was. 4 . My son Daniel's love for surfing began at the age of 13. After school he wore his wet suit, walked out beyond the surf line and waited to be challenged by his three-to six-foot companions. Daniel's love of the ride was tested one fateful afternoon.

“Your son’s been in an accident,” the lifeguard (救生员) reported over the phone to my husband Mike. “When he surfaced to the top of the water, the point of the board was heading toward his eye.” Mike rushed him to the emergency room. He received 26 stitches (针) from the corner of his eye to the bridge of his nose.

I was on an airplane flying home from a speaking arrangement while Dan's eye was being stitched. Mike drove directly to the airport after they left the doctor's office. He greeted me at the gate and told me Dan was waiting in the car, “Daniel?” I questioned. I remember thinking the waves must have been awful that day. “He's been in an accident, but he's going to be fine.” A traveling working mother's worst nightmare had come true.

I sobbed telling Daniel how awful I felt about not being there when the lifeguard called. “It's okay, Mom,” he comforted me. “You don't know how to surf anyway.” “What?” I asked, confused by his reason, “I'll be fine. The doctor says I can go back in the water in eight days.” Was he out of his mind? For the next seven days he kept pressing me to let him go back on the board. One day after I repeated “No” to him for the 100th time, he said, “Mom, you taught us never to give up what we love.” I gave in.

I used to be the shyest person in the world. I hid behind my elder sister whenever I had to speak to a stranger. When I was asked to speak in class, I could hardly breathe, much less speak.

Then, in seventh grade, my sister suggested I take voice lessons. After thinking carefully, I did and tried to keep it a secret. I began a series of exercises, making it so strange that I couldn't help laughing. I learned how to howl(长嚎) like a cowboy and snort like an old lady.

By playing around with sound in the class, I gained confidence in the part of me that had been a point of embarrassment before my voice.

A few months later, I was asked to sing for some old people. I thought I would do better than before because of the voice lessons. I opened my mouth and —nothing. I couldn't remember the lyrics! My face turned red. Then the thought came into my mind: I've embarrassed myself enough in front of this crowd. There's really nothing else to lose. So, for my second song. I just relaxed and felt the energy of the song lift me. And I did much better. After that, I started singing to myself as loudly as I could in my room. That's something I had never done before. 6 . Jerry was always in a good mood and always had something positive to say. He was a unique manager because he had several waiters who had followed him around from restaurant to restaurant. The reason why the waiters followed Jerry was because of his attitude. He was a natural motivator. 7 . He was a little, skinny (痩得皮包骨的) old man and lived by himself. No one knew much about him. One day, he got a bad cold and called for a doctor.

While the doctor was examining the old man, he asked, “Don’t you have a friend who could come to look after you?”

“No, I have no friends. I’ve never had any,” the old man replied.

“You’ve lived in this village all your life and never had a friend?” the doctor asked, surprised.

“Well, I’m not ashamed to say that I am 70 years old but I never met anyone I could call a friend for long. If it isn’t one thing wrong with them, it is another,” the old man answered.

“Come, come. Our village head, Mr. Black, will surely come to your aid if he knows you’re sick. I’m sure you know him too,” the doctor said.

“Of course I know him.” replied the old man, “but it’s so boring to hear him talk. You’d imagine the world had nothing in it but his wheat field and those pigs he always talks about.”

“Then what about Mr. White who lives down the road?” the doctor said.

“The most selfish fellow I ever came across, though I admit he’s clever. He’s traveled to many places and read many books and is very interesting to talk to. He used to come in here a lot at one time. But he would only come when he felt like doing so and he would stay away for long periods of time. I don’t call that friendship.”

The doctor laughed. “You surely can’t bring up anything against Mr. Smith though? Everyone loves him.”

“You’re right,” agreed the old man. “He has a good sense of humor and is great company, but his noisy tongue makes my poor head ache.”

“I’m afraid you see so many of your neighbors’ bad points that you’re blind to their good ones. You’re a hard nut to crack, old man. Anyway, please call me if you need me. As a doctor, I’ll attend to you whether you like me or not,” the doctor said as he picked up his bag and hat to leave.

8 . Saroo Brierley, a 4-year-old boy, lived in rural India. One day, he played with his brother along the rail line and fell asleep. When he woke up, he found himself alone. So he got on the train in front of him in search of his brother.

That train took him a thousand miles across the country to a totally strange city. He lived on the streets, and then in an orphanage (孤儿院), where he was adopted by an Australian family and taken to Tasmania.

Brierley is a famous writer now, and in his new book, A Long Way Home, he wrote he couldn’t help but wonder about his hometown back in India. He remembered landmarks, but since he didn’t know his town’s name, finding a small neighborhood in a vast country seemed impossible.

He studied it and realized he was looking at a town’s central business district from a bird’s-eye view. He thought, “On the right-hand side you should see the three-platform train station”—and there it was. “And on the left-hand side you should see a big fountain”—and there it was. Everything matched!

Standing in front of the house where he grew up as a child, he saw a lady standing at the entrance. It took him a few seconds but he finally remembered what she used to look like.

In an interview Brierley says, “My mother came forth and walked forward, and I walked forward, my eyes filled with tears and my brain blank. I just didn’t know what to say, because I never thought seeing my mother would ever come true. And here I am, standing in front of her.”
