Getting around the city when you are six months pregnant and have a two-year-old girl can be really     1     (challenge). One spring afternoon, we went to one of the grocery stores nearby to buy some food for dinner. There was no sign of rain, and the store was just around the corner,    2     we went there without an umbrella. However, we were about to leave the store     3     the rain came in full force. It seemed that the streets would be flooded     4     water within minutes.

I noticed a young Chinese couple     5     (stare) at us when we came to a crossroads and were waiting for the light to change. I figured they were probably wondering why a pregnant foreigner was dragging her little kid out through the rain. But as we crossed the street,    6     woman offered me her umbrella. I told her I couldn’t take     7     when it was clearly starting to storm. She insisted and handed it to me as she     8     (hurry) off with her husband.

Though     9     (catch) in the rain unexpectedly, we still treasured the memory and will always recall the     10     (warm) and kindness of the Chinese couple.

Taking this volunteer trip to the Wildlife Sanctuary project was something I had wanted to do several years.     1     (fortunate), between work and a busy schedule, it was always something that I “might” do “eventually" rather than actually doing. Then I decided it had to happen. I made preparations, booked my trip,     2     slightly hesitantly headed off to the airport.

Literally after one day of volunteering, I was already regretting only     3     (have) two weeks to stay. Every day was amazing and full of incredible     4     (experience). The days     5     (fly) by because we were so busy working on the farm, hanging out and making new friends, and learning about the wildlife     6     a hands-on manner. When Jack was a small boy, he was once asked to give a speech about “A Big Challenge in My Life”. First Jack was to draft the speech, which was just a piece of cake for him because he was a good writer. Mandarin Chinese and English are the two    1    (wide) spoken languages on this planet. While most Chinese people never bother    2    (learn) a second language and the quality of English education in China is steadily improving, there are only handful of Chinese people who    3    (be) able to use English at native or near-native speaker level.

I came to China in 2000 to learn Chinese, but little     4    I realize that everyone around me wanted to speak English! It was during this times    5     I started hearing curious phrases like "horse horse tiger tiger" and "people mountain people sea".     6    I went, everyone I talked to, no matter how long they had been studying English, all seemed to speak it with "Chinese    7    (character)”.On a personal level I found    8    fun and funny; as an educator, I wanted to do something about it.

So what happens when you combine Chinese and English? The result is a confusing but humorous byproduct called "Chinglish"，    9    on the one hand, I think is important to be able to laugh at but it's also to learn from our mistakes and strive toward    10    (express) ourselves in a more "native" manner.
