Thirty years ago, an elderly Canadian couple undertook     1    unique project with the intention of     2     (help) Canadians have a better understanding of China .Their efforts resulted     3    the birth of a 1985 book, Understanding China through cartoons . They     4    (official) donated it to China on June 10, 2019 .     5    (promote ) knowledge about China among Canadians, they founded a society in the early 1970s,     6     is now known as the Canadian-China Friendship Society. The elderly couple     7    (be) determined to gift it to China as their admiration for Chinese culture. “China is the only nation that has been able to maintain its cultural     8    (grow)for thousands of years,” the husband said. In fact, communication has been the     9    (good) way to promote each other’s understanding and trust. We need more people like the elderly couple     10     more institutions like the society.

3 . Rachel and her husband, Jason,     1    were both experienced climbers, were on a climbing holiday in Switzerland. When they were 3,000 metres up in the mountains, there was     2     storm. The wind was     3    (extreme) strong and the snow was two metres deep.They couldn’t move. Rachel had her mobile phone with her, so she sent a text message to five friends in the UK     4    (get) their help.

About four hours later, one of her friends, Martha, responded     5     her with a text message. Martha said she had phoned the police in Switzerland and that they had got in touch with the mountain rescue team.

But the weather was so bad     6     the helicopter (直升飞机) couldn’t get to the two climbers. The rescue team sent a message to Rachel,     7    (say): “So sorry Rachel. We tried. Wind is too strong. Once there lived a rich man    1     wanted to do something for the people of his town.     2     first he wanted to find out whether they deserved his help.

In the center of the main road into the town, he placed     3     very large stone. Then he     4     (hide ) behind a tree and waited. Soon an old man came along with his cow.

“Who put this stone in the center of the road?” said the old man, but he did not try to remove the stone. Instead, with some difficulty he passed around the stone and continued on his way.

    5     man came along and did the same thing; then another came, and another. All of them complained about the stone but not tried to remove     6    . Late in the afternoon a young man came along. He saw the stone,     7     (say) to himself:   “The night     8     (be) very dark. Some neighbors will come along later in the dark and will fall against the stone. ”

Then he began to move the stone. He pushed and pulled with all his     9     (strong) to move it. How great was his surprise at last!     10     the stone, he found a bag ofmoney.

This story happened last February at my office. One day at noon, during lunch, one of my Italian co-workers expressed her wish to read The Little Prince,     1     classical French story in French,     2     (practise) and improve her French.

In the evening, straight after work, I went to look     4     the book in a bookstore, imagining her     5     (react) when she was to discover it on her desk. 8 . One morning, I was waiting at the bus stop, worried about being late for school. There were many people       1    (wait) at the bus stop, and some of them looked very anxious and     2    (disappoint). When the bus finally came, we all hurried on board. I got a place next     3     the window, so I had a good view of the sidewalk. A boy on a bike caught my attention. He     4    (ride) beside the bus and waving his arms. I heard a passenger behind me shouting to the driver,     5     he refused to stop     6     we reached the next stop. Still, the boy kept riding. He was carrying something over his shoulder and shouting. Finally, when we came to the next stop, the boy came up to the door of the bus, and I heard an     7    (excite) conversation. Then the driver stood up and asked, “Did anyone lose a suitcase at the last stop?” A woman on the bus shouted, “Oh dear! It’s       8    (I).” She pushed her way to the driver and took the suitcase thankfully. Everyone on the bus began talking about what the boy     9    (do), and the crowd of strangers     10    (sudden) became friendly to one another.
