Not long ago, my daughter’s shoes     1     (damage) with a knife. She burst into tears. I took them to the shoemaker’s. The man said he would add more scratches on both shoes as if the openings were made on purpose for a special style. I didn’t fully understand him, but I decided to leave the shoes. Two days later I dropped by from work     2     (collect) the shoes. I found more scratches on each shoe, but all the openings were patched by red leather and the stitches were twisted. The appearance looked     3     (interesting) than ever.

Wang Dakang, aged 88, is a model of lifelong learning. In the 1980s, he was the first person    1    (accomplish) a round trip of China using only a bicycle. Meet Harpreet Kaur Chandi, also known as Polar Preet, the 33-year-old who has been making headlines all over the world after    1     (become) the first woman of color to complete a solo expedition across Antarctica.

“The reason    2    I chose Antarctica was that Ⅰ didn’t know much about it, and I thought, if I could do something that pushes me so far out of my comfort zone,    3    (hopeful) it’ll inspire other people    4    (do) the same,” said she.

As a part of her tough expedition, Preet endured temperatures as low as minus 50 degrees Celsius, and wind speeds of up to 96 kilometers per hour. She    5    (walk) around 27 kilometers a day, pulling a 90-kilogram sled containing her equipment.

“It was generally windy, and there were only two     6    (day) that I can remember when there was slight wind. A man decided to make a video to spread joy in the city. Firefighters eventually put out the flames, but the house was completely destroyed. The couple were desperate.
