1     (hero) come in different shapes and sites. Some are born to give others a hand. Then there are the people who just happen to be in the right place at the right time. That was the case for John Underwood.

A storm broke near his home     2     a cold evening. Underwood was heading over to help his sister when the roads were flooded. He saw some other drivers get     3    (stick), so he got out of his truck to help. “My belief is that if I have the ability to do good, then I should do it. There should be no excuse.” he said. Underwood wasn't out of his vehicle long before he heard a cry, “Someone was screaming, “My parents, my parents!” Moments later, a 12-year-old boy ran up to Underwood,     4    (say) his parents were trapped and asked for help. The Hammonds went to get things from the basement when the walls failed     5    (bear) the weight of rain and fell down, and they couldn’t escape. Worse still, the water was rising fast. Time was of extreme significance, so Underwood took action at once. Any inappropriate action could add more dangers. Luckily, Underwood had experience     6     a contractor (承包商). “Digging a hole in the living room floor, I knew it's a safe way." He said.

With physical strength,     7    (patient), and a lot of bravery，Underwood saved their    8    (life). He said he did what anyone would do, but that’s not necessarily true. It's hard to put yourself in a dangerous way to rescue another. That's    9     the American Red Cross honored him. Ann Otto, who was in charge of the 23rd Annual Acts of Courage Awards, said the Awards should go to heroes like Underwood who have acted    10     (courage) and selflessly in a time of emergency.

Christopher Reeve,     1    was born in September, 1952, was in his first school play when he was eight and he started to act in TV shows and films while he was still in college. He made many    2     (success) films and TV shows but he was most famous     3     his Superman films.

    4     (lucky), disaster came in 1995 when he fell from his horse and     5    (break) his back. The doctors did not expect him to live.     6    , he made amazing progress. At first, he couldn’t breathe without a machine, but he learnt to breathe on his own. He would never walk again but he started     7     new life with great courage.

The second year after his accident, Christopher returned to film making. He also raised a lot of money     8     (help) medical research into back injuries. He made     9    (speech) all over the USA about his experiences. This not only drew public attention to research into back injuries     10     encouraged a lot of people living with all kinds of problems.

4 . When I was in elementary school, I didn’t like going to school . I had    1    (difficult) with reading and writing and I always couldn’t answer the teacher’s questions     2    (correct). I cried a lot at school   because I     3    (laugh) by my classmates. My parents would always get mad at me . I felt very upset and didn’t have any interest     4    study.

But then one day. I decided     5    (change) my attitude to study. So I ended up     6     (pay)   more attention in class and I started to practice my vocabulary and spelling skills, Also, I always     7    ( go) to my teachers for help   when I had any trouble. I started to do better in Grade 3.     8     I   was in Grade4, I was still improving . By Grade 5, I had become the top student in class.

Now as I’m     9     senior high school students, I know it might be difficult at first. But like my past in elementary school , I know if I keep working and don’t give up, will be     10    (success).

It was a sunny day. A little boy’s father was sitting on the couch, drinking a beer while watching     1     basketball match. Seeing this, the boy rushed to his father and shouted. “Daddy, show we how to play catch.” The father, staring     2     the television screen, replies, “Let me finish watching the match. Play outside and come back in five minutes.”

“Okay, Daddy,” said the boy, running out of the room. Five minutes later, the boy returned,     3    (scream), “Daddy, let’s play catch now!”

By this time, the father had opened another cold beer and another match was beginning. Impatient    4     the boy’s interruption, the dad brought a magazine to his son. On the cover of the magazine was a large picture of the world. The father, who was angry and     5    (bother), began tearing the magazine cover into small     6    . Then, the father turned to his boy and said, “Son, once you put this picture back together, we can play catch, but do not interrupt me again     7     you finish.”

A few minutes later, the boy     8     (return) and said, “Daddy! Can we play catch now?”     9    (surprise), the father glanced towards his child, and there lay the magazine with the world pieced perfectly together in his small hands. The dad asked his child how he put the world together so quickly.

“    10     was simple,” said the boy. “On the back of the world was the picture of a person, and once I put the person together, that’s when the world came together.”

Our group Springhill Baptist Church started a food pantry (食品储藏室) to help out members of the community. As part of the program, we buy the food that will    1    (distribute) and make boxes for distribution. We do this on    2    regular basis—the second Monday of every month.

One day, as my friend and I    3    (load) our grocery carts with the necessary items in the store, a gentleman asked us,“    4    do you get so many items？”We explained we were doing our    5    (month) grocery shopping and gave him some details about our program.    6    (say) that it was great, he went on with his business.

After gathering everything on our list, we started unloading the food to check out at the counter, only    7    (inform) by the cashier that our bill had already been paid.

The gentleman who asked about our    8    (intend) had left his credit card number to pay    9    our order and then walked off. He had no idea what the cost was before he left. We were    10    (extreme) shocked at the generosity of a stranger.

I had to visit my sister in another town because her husband     1    (be) very ill. My children stayed back in     2    (they) father’s care, except for the youngest. I was nervous taking a train journey alone with my one-year-old daughter. However, I gathered all my courage and boarded the train.

It was     3    (surprise) that there were only three other passengers in that carriage, two old ladies and a young man. My daughter was crying, missing her dad. I tried to comfort her,     4    her crying wouldn’t stop.

Just then the young man offered     5    (take) my baby into his arms. He stood with her near the window and started talking to her in a soft voice. My daughter stopped crying     6    (slow). I was both surprised and relieved.     7    stranger handed my daughter back once she was asleep. During the long train journey this young man continuously helped me. He fed my baby, sang to her and told her countless     8    (story). I was grateful for this man     9    had come to my rescue.

After so many years, I still remember this stranger on the train with a     10    (thank) heart.
