1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Despite their genetic similarities, my twin sisters Lenna and Elsa were quite different. Lenna was a recognized athlete in our community. We all expected her to attain a scholarship on one field or another, but she lacked a certain edge to her reasoning. Elsa got along well with everyone who works in the library, but she had the grace (优雅) of a two-legged table. They had found few occasions to relate with one another and grew distant. Had I not lived with them, I would not have known them to be sisters.

They did, however, share a drive for success that seemed to become more successful around the same time during senior year. After a track and field season, Lenna was offered full scholarship at a reputable state university near our home, so long as she maintained a 3.0 GPA. Elsa had a more important thing to do: she was one perfect report card away from seizing the chance of making a speech at a graduation ceremony from her opponent, Chet Goodweather. At the end of the sixth Wednesday of the fourth marking period, as the sisters unfolded the printed report cards, their smiles turned to tears: Lenna was getting a “D” in science and Elsa was getting a “C” in gym class.

Lenna and Elsa came home at the same time and were surprised to find one another disappointed. As they argued with one another about who had suffered the greater misfortune, they realized that the other’s problem sounded easy to solve. Elsa barked, “Your problem isn’t even a problem. I could pass that test easily and 1 can show you how to as well.”Lenna retorted(反驳), “Well, all you need to do to get an ‘A’ is to shorten your mile time to five or ten minutes. Two weeks of training with me and the coach will try to have you on the track team.” The girls exchanged glances and came to a quick agreement.

One afternoon after school, Mary and her brother, Keith, were eating at a cafe near their home. That afternoon, they had to share their table with another person. That person was a young lady in her twenties. After eating, she went to the restroom. Without realizing, she had left her cellphone on the table. Five minutes later, she came out and walked out of the cafe without looking back.

Mary saw the cellphone on the table. She quickly told Keith, “Keith, the girl left behind her cellphone.”Keith looked at the cellphone. It took his breath away. It was one of the latest models on the market. Keith had always wanted a cellphone. But his parents had told him, “You don’t need one. You can always use the house phone.” He stared at it for some minutes. Then, he said slowly, pausing on every word, “I want to take the cellphone.” Mary could not believe her ears. She only stared at her brother, “You can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it?”

After making the decision, Keith quickly got the cellphone and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Mary’s hand and led her out of the cafe quickly.

Once back home, Keith locked his room door with trembling (颤抖的) hands. Inside his room, he took out the piece of beauty. Oh, he liked it so much. He had his own cellphone. Soon, he was polishing it happily. But Mary told him, “Keith, you cannot keep the cellphone. What will you tell our father about this? He will ask you how you got the cellphone.” Keith said quickly, “I will say a friend lent it to me.” Mary said, “Now you are lying too. Oh dear! When had Keith turned so dishonest?”

Then, Mary saw a house phone number on the cover of the cellphone. “This is the girl’s phone number. Why don’t we just call this number? We will talk to her and ask her to come and take back her cellphone,” she was trying to talk some sense into him.

Henry Crawley was a cab driver who drove long circuits every day. His job kept him away from family for long hours. It was the topic of many quarrels he had gotten into with his wife, who understood why he was away so often but could not resist the urge to cry out for her husband’s physical absence.

To make up for not always being there for his daughter, Leslie, Henry was determined to make it to her 16th birthday party on time. On the day of her birthday, Henry conveyed as many passengers as he could as usual. When he finally finished the last order to a distant town outside the city, Henry rushed back to his city for the small party.

However, he got caught up in a heavy snowstorm that restricted mobility on his way back. Stubbornly, he decided he would press on anyway and continued driving even though he had to go at a snail’s (蜗牛的) pace.

It was 6: 00 pm and Leslie’s party started at 6: 30 pm. He complained about the weather as he fastened his eyes on the slippery road. As time passed, he got closer to the city. Suddenly, he spotted a person sitting beside the road. He stopped his car to check on it, and found it was an elderly woman who was unable to speak but almost freezing. Her bedroom clothes told him she must be from the town nearby he just drove past.

Henry decided to take the woman to her town, but he remembered that his wife would be upset with him if he missed his daughter’s birthday party. He called his wife to explain things. As he predicted, she said nothing, ending up the call. That made him uneasy and almost turn back to his car. But he knew that he could not leave the woman helpless. “I’d want someone to care for my wife or daughter if they ended up in such a tough situation,” he said to himself.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Many years ago, I lived in a densely populated old community in Northern California. There was a little girl named Grace that made me have a deeper understanding of the power of dreams.

I used to watch her from my kitchen window, who seemed so small as she muscled her way through the crowd of boys on the playground. The school was across the street from our home and I would often watch the kids as they played during break. A sea of children, and yet to me, she stood out from them all.

I remember the first day I saw her playing basketball. I watched in wonder as she ran circles around the other kids. She managed to shoot jump shots just over their heads and into the net. The boys always tried to stop her but no one could.

I began to notice her at other times, basketball in hand, playing alone. She would practice dribbling and shooting over and over again, sometimes until dark. One day I asked her why she practiced so much. She looked directly into my eyes and said without a moment of hesitation “I want to go to college. The only way I can go is to get a scholarship. I like basketball. I decided that if I were good enough, I would get a scholarship. I am going to play college basketball. I want to be the best. My Daddy told me if the dream is big enough, the facts don’t count.” Then she smiled and ran towards the court to restart the routine I had seen over and over again.

Well, she was determined. I watched her through those junior high years and into high school. Every week, she led her team to victory.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。

Tigger wandered the pet shop to find an extraordinary animal as his companion.

The shop owner enthusiastically presented various special pets to Tigger, but none caught his attention until he noticed a cage in the distance. “What’s in there?” he asked.

“That’s Marmalade, just a regular parrot.” the owner replied.

Curious, Tigger approached the cage. The big white bird cocked her head to one side and let out a little squawk (尖叫).

“Can she talk?” Tigger asked.

The pet shop owner nodded, “Sometimes. She will talk when she has something important to say.”

“That makes her unique,” said Tigger, “and she will be my pet.”

After the purchase, he lifted the cage off the counter and walked proudly out of the shop.

At home, Tigger placed Marmalade on his bedroom desk. He pushed his face up close to the cage and said, “Watch my lips, Marmalade. My name is Tigger. Now say hello Tigger!”

Marmalade hopped round the cage. She pecked at seeds lying on the floor. She tapped the hanging silver bell with her beak, but she did not say a word.

Despite her quietness, Tigger consistently shared his school day with Marmalade as soon as he came back.

One afternoon, Tigger returned home late. Marmalade acted quite strangely. She glared at the door, walking round and round the cage. She jumped up on the wires and banged the silver bell with her beak. Then she stopped and opened her beak as if she was going to talk. But before she could say a word, Tigger rushed into the room waving a yellow piece of paper.

“Look, Marmalade!”

He pushed the paper against the cage. “The school’s annual pet show is tomorrow. And guess what? I’ve entered you. Unlike other years, besides judges, our headmaster, Mr. White, will select a special winner. I believe you’ll enjoy it.” Yet, Marmalade remained silent.

The next morning, Tigger woke early. He cleaned out Marmalade’s cage, filled the dishes with water and seeds and polished the bell.

“You know, Marmalade,” he said happily, “I’m sure no one will have a pet like you, a talking bird. Marmalade will be the winner!”

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的故事。

At 63, Jerry Valencia was determined to get his college degree — and his master’s degree, too. The student arrived early, sat front and center, and stood out in my classroom in more ways than one. I’d say that he had about 40 years on his classmates in my undergraduate communications class at California State University, Los Angeles. He eagerly jumped into class discussions, with his modest humor and wisdom of experience. And he was always respectful of the other students’ views, as if each of them were a teacher. Jerry Valencia walked in with a smile — and he left with one, too.

Valencia always said that these students gave him the confidence and joy that he didn’t need to feel bad about his age.

One day, I found Valencia sitting on campus. He said he would have to stop taking classes that semester and reapply for next year. By then, he hoped to have earned enough money from construction jobs he used to take to pay for his tuition. But he said he would still come to campus to attend events, see his friends and take the final exams. He asked seriously whether he could still sit in my communications class.

“Sure,” I said.

Soon there he was again, back at his old desk, front and center, jumping into our discussions on how to find and tell stories in Los Angeles-a 63-year-old junior with as much energy and curiosity as any of the youngsters in my class.

For an assignment on changing neighborhoods, Valencia wrote about a favorite local chain restaurant that was “unceremoniously (随便地) closed”. He called it as a theft of childhood. “It is almost as if someone has stolen that childhood and replaced it with a slippery hill where everything they cherish will slide away,” he wrote. A lot of Valencia’s classmates apparently knew he couldn’t pay that semester’s tuition. However, he was still making his efforts to do the homework well.

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks.

One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it a secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.

Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.

The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided(碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.

Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead.

Everybody liked her, except Gloria. She didn’t allow Sophie to go into her housed and didn’t permit her to play with her grandson Sam, who was two years old at the time.

Every summer, the local river got flooded. That afternoon, when the water’s level rose, the children had gone to school, the women were busy in the kitchen making dishes for dinner, and the men were in their offices or factories.

Suddenly, news came that the dam across the river had given way and the water had quickly entered the city. Children were then asked to rush home. The areas on the river banks were in danger of being flooded, so people living on the ground floors were shifted to places of safety. Those living in two or three-storied houses climbed to the top. Taylor Hash wanted to be a career pilot. She had just started building up hours of flight time when disaster struck. As she guided the Diamond Star plane off the runway at Oakland County International airport, on her third-ever independent flight, the front tyre (轮胎) of her plane fell off.

Taylor was unaware at that point that she had just lost crucial landing equipment. “I didn’t feel anything on the takeoff roll (起飞滑跑).” she said.

Experienced pilot Chris Yates, though, saw something on the takeoff roll and immediately took action. He knew that Taylor would have to make a difficult emergency landing. He radioed the control tower and said, “The Diamond Star that just took off lost its nose (头部) wheel tyre on the runway.”

But the control tower operators didn’t know what to do. They’d never seen such a thing happen before. Yates asked them to put him through to Taylor so he could help her.

When Taylor learned what had happened, she was in panic. With only 57 total fight hours under her belt, she didn’t know what her options were and could only imagine how this was going to end.

“I didn’t know what to do in that moment,” said Taylor later. “I’m just panicking and figuring out how I’m going to land this plane safely.”

But Yates knew what to do. He knew that the most important thing would be to keep Taylor calm so that she could follow his instructions effectively.

Yates started by reassuring (使安心) Taylor that everything was going to turn out just fine: “Taylor, this is Chris Yates. My daughter’s name is Taylor, and I taught her to fly! We’re gonna be just fine. Just take your time.” He told her that she could circle the field until she was ready to land. “When you touch down, I just want that stick (操纵杆) all the way back. You’re gonna hold that stick back like you don’t want that nose to touch,” he coached her.
