2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A Special Gift

I always believe that there are certain gifts sticking in our minds for a variety of reasons.

The gift given to me that I treasured most was a doll named Patsy. I met her in a gift shop when I was nine. On holding Patsy I immediately fell in love with her and couldn’t even bear to part from her. At that time, my mother noticed it and at Christmas, as I received the gift from her, I was surprised to find my dream doll in the box. From then on Patsy became my baby and I loved her dearly.

A month later, I was on my way to the cinema when I glimpsed some lovely gifts in pretty boxes through the window of the gift shop. Seeing them reminded me that my mother’s birthday was a few months away. Wouldn’t it be nice, I thought, if I could give her something really special, just like the gift she gave me? I stepped inside and caught sight of a beautiful dress hung on the coat stand, which I was sure my mother would like. So I asked the saleswoman its price.

The lady must have seen my disappointment when she told me how much it would cost. But she had a suggestion which immediately lifted my spirits. She took out a notebook from under the counter and wrote my name as well as the item I wanted to buy on it, and in return I paid her five cents from my six cents pocket money. It meant no candies that day but I didn’t care. At the age of nine, I made my very first installment (分期付款)and felt like a grown-up. From then on, every Saturday on my way to the cinema, I went to the shop and paid a few cents which the lady dutifully recorded on her notebook.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a Sunday morning. Betty woke up earlier than usual. She couldn’t sleep any longer because she was so excited that her uncle Mark was taking her to the beach. She had always loved going surfing with her uncle. She put her swimming suit on and took her bag quickly that she had prepared the night before and went outside to wait. She jumped up and down with joy when she saw her uncle’s red jeep turn the corner down her street.

Uncle Mark got out of the car and helped Betty get in. “Are you ready?” he asked. “Yes!” replied Betty. Uncle Mark could see the excitement in her face. Suddenly he said seriously, “well, before we go, I have to let you know that a shark appeared recently where we’re going to surf today.” Scared and shocked, Betty couldn’t say a word. “Haha! I’m kidding you, “Uncle Mark burst out laughing. Betty laughed too. She knew Uncle Mark liked teasing others. “Let’s go and have some breakfast, I know just the place,” Uncle Mark said. They went to a breakfast shop and ate some tacos (炸玉米饼).

After breakfast the two of them went down to Pacific Beach and got their surfboards ready. “First you have to wax (打蜡) the bottom,” explained Uncle Mark. “I know. I’ve watched you do it before!” Betty said as she took the wax from Uncle Mark’s hand. It took about 15 minutes to wax the bottom of their boards. When Betty finished, Uncle Mark looked it over to make sure it was done well. “Nice job, Betty, you wax your board like a true surfer.”

Finally, they were ready to get into the water. They carried their boards down to the beach and went out into the water. Betty was overly excited and tried to rush to catch a wave. Predictably, she crashed and had to start over. Next was her uncle’s turn. He stood up on his first try and smoothly surfed the wave before jumping into the water. Betty cheered for her uncle’s perfect run.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A friend of mine whose name was John Smith had a bad memory, which made him famous. He was so forgetful that he sometimes forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence. His wife had to constantly remind him about his meetings, his classes — even his meals! Once he forgot he had eaten breakfast twice, at home and at school. His wife liked to remind her neighbours, “If John didn’t have his head tied on, he would forget that too!” Since Smith was a professor at a well-known university, his forgetfulness was often an embarrassment to him. It wasn’t that he was not clever, as some critical people tended to say, but just very absent-minded.

One hot summer day, Professor Smith decided to take his children to a seaside town about a three-hour train ride away. To make the trip more interesting for his young children, he kept the name of the town a secret. However, by the time they arrived at the station, Smith forgot the name of the town he was planning to visit. Luckily, a friend of his happened to be in the station. He offered to take care of the children while Smith hurried back home to find out where he was going.

The professor’s wife was surprised to see him again so soon.

“Oh, my dear, I forget the name of the town.”

“What? You forget the name? Maybe one day you will forget my name! Now I’ll write the name of that town on a piece of paper, and you put it in your pocket and please, please don’t forget where you put it.”

Satisfied that she had solved the problem, she sent her husband off again. Ten minutes later she was astonished to see him outside the house for the third time.

“What is the matter now?” asked his wife.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Linda, a high school girl, was feeling depressed after she had failed her mid-term exams. She didn’t answer her teachers’ questions actively in class like she used to. Instead, she began to lower her head and got absent-minded easily. Her friends and classmates were worried about her, but she didn’t feel like talking about it with them. Mrs. Green, her English teacher, noticed her changes and decided to do something before it got worse.

One day, Mrs. Green entered the classroom and asked her students to prepare for a surprise test. They waited anxiously at their desks for the test to begin. Mrs. Green handed out the question papers, with the text facing down as usual. After she handed them all out, she asked her students to turn the page and begin. To everyone’s surprise, there were no questions, just a black dot in the center of the page. Mrs. Green, seeing the expression on everyone’s face, told them the following:

“I want you to write what you see there.”

The students, confused, got started on the task.

At the end of the class, Mrs. Green collected all the answer papers and started reading them aloud in front of all the students. Just as Mrs. Green had expected, with no exception, all of them described the black dot, trying to explain its position in the middle of the sheet, etc. Mrs. Green then picked out Linda’s paper and added,

“Linda, I like your idea. Would you please follow me to the office and talk about it?”

“Er... Yes, madam!” Linda was puzzled because she thought her idea was no better than anyone else’s. Like others, she also described the black dot only and ignored the white part of the paper.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As a teenager, I couldn’t stand seeing a photo of my nose in profile. I hated how big it was and, if people praised me for my looks, I always felt it was in spite of the most noticeable feature on my face.

I was about to accept that I would never fully see my nose as beautiful when I met Nicholas Baldion, an artist, in a London pub, and asked him to paint my portrait. I regretted this the second I arrived for my sitting. I had forgotten that Baldion would have to spend hours staring at my biggest insecurity, and then painstakingly translating it onto canvas.

The first sitting was hard. I could not shake the feeling of wanting to turn my head to face the front. I hated the fact that Baldion was openly and carefully examining the one feature I had spent years trying to hide. Yet, as the two-and-a-half-hour sitting went on, I calmed down and began to accept my feelings. I had put myself in this situation, so now I just needed to sit in it. By the second sitting, I was almost excited—not just by the thought of having an afternoon when I had an excuse to do absolutely nothing, but because it had finally sunk in that I was having my portrait done.

I was a volunteer for an organisation at the beginning of this year. The organisation is aimed at helping children who suffer from cancer. One day, we were asked to raise money for cancer research and programme funding at an event.

Since my friend Lisa was also a volunteer for the organisation, I went to the event with her. There were many people at the event. After seeing our poster, some people came to us and talked with us. But few people donated money. It was a bit hot that day. Both Lisa and I got really upset.

Half an hour later, Lisa started complaining, “I don’t think we can raise much money today. ”

“Don’t worry. The event lasts for three hours. There is still a lot of time left,” I said, though I also thought poorly of our plan to raise much money that day.

While Lisa and I were talking, a little boy of about eight years old came to us. He stood in front of our poster and started reading.

After a while, he asked, “What is cancer?”

I explained what cancer is. Then I said, “Many people around the world are suffering from cancer. It can be really dangerous. More research is needed to learn about it so that people with it can suffer less. That’s why we’re collecting money for it. ”

“Do children suffer from cancer, too?” asked the boy.

“Yes. Many children suffer from cancer. Some of them may die. They need help. ” Lisa said and I nodded.

Hearing that, the boy became sad. Then the boy asked, “How much money have you collected?”

Both Lisa and I were embarrassed to tell him that we didn’t raise much money. At last, we said, “Not much. ”

The boy looked into our donation container and only saw a few onedollar and fivedollar bills. The boy said nothing after seeing that and left. Then some girls came to us and we started talking with them. Neither Lisa nor I thought the boy would return. However, about twenty minutes later, the boy did return.

The boy happily ran to us and asked, “Would you take a donation from children?”

The sound of breaking glass was immediately recognizable. Hearing the sound, I turned around and froze. “Oh, no, not the vase,” Lisa said. “Why? What did I do?” My face turned red. “Abby, that glass vase is our family heirloom (传家宝),” Lisa replied nervously. “If you broke anything else in the apartment, I would gladly say ‘I did it’. But this time you have to tell my mom that it is your fault.” I was afraid and regretful. Why did I have to jump around like that?

We gathered up the pieces. I kept saying maybe it could be fixed but Lisa said gently it didn’t look possible and that her mom would be home soon. Would her mom shout at me or punish me? I couldn’t stop playing those seconds over in my mind. The only thing I could think of to say was “I’m sorry”.

Soon, we heard the key tun in the lock. Her mom was home. We could see she was in a good mood, “Hello! It’s hot today. I want to treat you two to ice cream. Let’s go!” her mom said. “Before that, I need to tell you something.” I said. “We can talk later.” “No, I need to tell you now. It’s important,” I insisted. I could feel my voice shaking. “What is it, dear?” Her mom walked closer to me. I could feel she studied my face thoughtfully. My heart beat faster.

“I’m sorry. I broke your vase by accident. I’ve leaned it is your family heirloom. We have save the pieces, and if it can be fixed, I will pay to fix it. I’m so sorry.” Her mom looked at me expressionless and saying nothing. This scared me even more. Then she let out laughter and hugged me, kissing me on both cheeks. “Oh, thank you! I always hated that ugly vase, but I had to keep it because it was passed down in my family. Now it’s gone! You’ve done me a huge favor!” she said and kissed me again.

Only eight days until Thanksgiving and there wasn’t going to be enough money to buy the necessary things for the holiday. I promised my three sons that we’d love a nice family dinner in our new home, unlike the prior year when we canceled Thanksgiving to deal with the loss of their father.

It was hard to put everyday food on the table for three growing boys with the little I earned from work, but I promised a good meal. We looked forward to a day of good eating! But there was only enough bread in the house, two chicken breasts and a few other things.

The next day, I met my friend and neighbor, Aleta, at her home. Her four boys and my kids were good friends. Her husband had recently lost his job due to illness, and they suffered financial difficulties as well.

We stood there talking about our coming Thanksgiving dinner, and agreed to make a Thanksgiving feast together. Then children of the two families headed out and found a few neighbors who helped them earn enough to purchase most of the items they set out for, except the turkey.

Four days before Thanksgiving, I managed to buy a turkey and finished baking the cookies. My friend called with news about a family living in our community who needed help with food and bills. The father had been in an accident and unable to work for the last few months. We didn’t know the family well, but my friend and I went to visit them with our holiday cookies, hoping to help in some way. In no time, her kids ate the cookies.

While everyone chatted. I went into their kitchen. The cupboards were almost bare. I was shocked. Aleta and I left the house, desperately wanting to help. Without a word, we looked at each other, asking ourselves the same question. Could we sacrifice a little more and give the family our holiday meal?

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为90左右。

“Hey! Are you a girl or a duck?” I ignored (忽视) the comments because I knew they were from the mean girl, Betsy. I ran to my class, causing my slight limp (跛行) to become even more apparent. Already, I could see that things would be different here. At my old school, I had a group of friends to protect me. However, in this new school, I was on my own. I was grateful for alphabetic (字母的) seating. My last name came at the beginning of the alphabet and Betsy’s last name came at the end. As the weeks went on, though, I made friends with two girls named Fran and Lisa who sat near me in class. Whenever Betsy made one of her remarks, they would wave it aside and tell me to ignore her.

One day, our teacher asked us to change seats to make some new friends. As she assigned the new seating, Fran, Lisa, and I looked at each other and waited for our names to be called. We didn’t want to be separated. And we especially didn’t want to sit anywhere near Betsy. Finally, Betsy sat directly behind me.

I knew this wasn’t going to be good. Betsy often leaned forward and said: “Quack, quack!” When I ignored her, she kicked my seat. This went on daily until one morning I simply refused to go to school. I told Mum what had happened at school.

My mother sat me down and began to talk.
