1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Casey Ryan works in a well-known newspaper as a famous photographer. After work, he likes to take an adventure in the wildness and take some photos. Whenever photographer Casey heads into the wildness, he brings along his drone (无人机) to take some photographs from a bird’s eye view.

Having the drone with him on a recent trip to the Willamette National Forest in the Cascade Mountain Range in Oregon saved his and another person’s lives.

That day, Casey was driving through the Willamette National Forest. When he arrived at his destination, he began to use his drone to take many photos, and the beautiful places made him excited. These photos made him feel a strong sense of achievement.

With a good harvest, he began to drive home. On the way home, he came across a stranger whose car was stuck. At that time, Casey was still in the deep forest. Casey volunteered to help get it out without hesitation. Unluckily, he got his own car stuck in a ditch (沟) while trying to help, leaving both people in trouble with no cell phone service for miles around.

“I am so sorry for making your car stuck here. What can we do now?” the stranger said with anxiety.

“Don’t worry! Let’s think it over! Maybe I can call my wife for help,” Casey said.

“But here is too out-of-the-way. It is surely no cell phone service. How can we call for help?” the stranger said disappointedly.

Just as they were wandering, Casey immediately recalled a movie he’d seen recently in which a character typed some messages in the phone and used a drone to lift his phone high enough to catch cell phone service in a similar situation. When the stranger heard the idea, he felt pleasantly surprised. Just right, Casey had a drone. Casey walked quickly to his car.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One of my best friends is named Lisa. If you’d told us a month ago that there would come a point when we would need space from each other, we would have said “Not a chance!”

But then Lisa’s family won a five-day stay in a mountain cabin(小屋). Because Lisa’s sister, Alana, was spending the week with her grandparents, Lisa’s mom and dad said I could come along instead.

When I told my parents about the awesome invitation, my mom said, “That sounds fun, but keep in mind that five days is a long time to spend with a friend.” I shook my head. “Lisa and I are just like fish and water. We’re happy sticking together. Plus, the cabin is near paths where we can try snowshoeing and other outdoor stuff.”

A few weeks later, Lisa and her parents and I arrived at an adorable cabin surrounded by snow-covered pine trees. “What a great place!” Lisa’s dad said.

“It’s looking a little cloudy,” said Lisa’s mom, glancing at the sky. “Let’s hope it means snow and not rain.”

As you might have guessed, the clouds did mean rain. Lots of rain. And since our major plans involved snowshoeing and watching winter wildlife, we were stuck. “I guess we’ll have to find something else to do,” said Lisa.

We found a couple of board games and a pack of cards and sat down. At first, it was fun, but we ended up playing those games for about 100 hours, stopping only to eat and sleep!

“I can’t play anymore,” I said on the third day. “How about we just read by ourselves for a while?”

“I have a better idea,” said Lisa. “How about singing instead?”

“I think a little quiet time would be nice,” I said, opening a book I had brought.

“Oh, come on! Don’t be boring. I’ll pick the first song.” Lisa started singing “Somewhere over the Rainbow.”

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jackie was searching for her library book in her room. Outside her house stood her friend Sasha waiting for her to go to the library. But the book was missing.

Jackie then ran into her sister’s bedroom. “Have you seen my library book? Last week my book was bitten by your cat. The week before that, you dropped my book in the park,” Jackie asked angrily. Her sister shook her head. Despite her efforts, Jackie found no traces of the book there.

“What’s taking you so long, Jackie?” Mom’s voice rang through the house. “I need to find my library book. It has a red cover. It’s due (到期) today. If I have lost the library book, I am not allowed to check out any books for a whole month,” Jackie sighed, walking down the stairs. She nearly ran into her mom, who was carrying a heavy laundry (待洗衣物) basket.

“Good luck with that book. The library closes in twenty minutes.” Mom stopped to grab Jackie’s clothes from the railing and wrinkled her nose. “I’m putting these in the laundry,” said Mom, disappearing down the basement stairs.

Jackie ran around the house, looking under the sofa, in the fridge, and behind the piano. However, the book was nowhere to be found. Where was that library book? The thought of not being able to get into the world of stories and knowledge for a whole month made her feel very sad. Jackie sank onto the living room sofa, her mind racing with thoughts of the result she would soon face.

Just then Mom came into the living room and suddenly said, “Have you searched all the places? You need to think carefully and see if you’ve missed anything?” “I’ve searched everywhere I can think of, but I still haven’t found it,” Jackie almost cried. “I looked for you in your painting room in the backyard last night where you were practising your painting. I seemed to see a red thing. Maybe it was in the painting room,” Mom added.

Once upon a time, there lived a poor but cheerful shoemaker. He was so happy that he sang all day long. The children loved to stand around his window to listen to him.

Next door to the shoemaker lived a rich man. He used to sit up all night to count his gold. In the morning, he went to bed, but he could not sleep because of the sound of the shoemaker’s singing. One day, he thought of a way to stop the singing. He wrote a letter to the shoemaker inviting him over for a cup of tea.

The shoemaker came at once, and to his great surprise, the rich man gave him a bag of gold as a gift. The shoemaker took the bag and thanked the rich man. When he returned home, the shoemaker couldn’t wait to open the bag. He had never seen so much gold in his life! He sat down at his bench and began, carefully, to count it. The children watched through the window.

There was so much there that the shoemaker was afraid to let it out of his sight. So he took it to bed with him. But he could not sleep for worrying about it. So he got out of bed and went to hide it in the attic (阁楼), but he was not sure if that was a good place.

Very early in the morning, he got up and brought his gold down from the attic. He had decided to hide it up the chimney (烟囱) instead. But after breakfast, he thought it would be safer in the chicken house. So he hid it there. But he was still uneasy, and in a little while he dug a hole in the garden and buried his bag of gold in it.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Widower Adam, single dad of 3, couldn’t imagine his kind help several days ago was rewarded (奖励) by a truck from the lady he helped.

It was seven in the morning. Adam was jogging in a local park. Adam had a strict schedule that started with this run. In 30 minutes, he would run back home, a place filled with chaos (混乱) in the morning, especially with getting Amanda, his naughty 13-year-old, and Jared, his energetic 8-year-old, ready for school. They missed their mom, Cynthia. Her death was a gap (缺口) that Adam couldn’t fill, no matter how hard he tried. She had been gone 6 years, yet the pain was all too fresh. Luckily his daughter at 22 could help cooking.

As he ran the last round, Adam took a deep breath. This park and these morning runs were his connection to Cynthia. She loved running, and he could almost see her jogging alongside him, her laughter ringing in his ears. It was peaceful. He checked his watch, quickening his pace. It was almost time to head back and dive into the last-minute school project panics.

Suddenly, in the middle of his thoughts, Adam saw something unusual. An old woman, probably around 60 or 65, was struggling up the park stairs. Just as she neared the top, she lost her footing. Adam watched in shock as she fell down, rolling awkwardly. Giving up his strict schedule, he rushed over.

“Ma’am, are you okay?” Adam asked, out of breath, as he carefully helped her sit up. She was a bit shaken, brushing dirt off her clothes, trying to calm down. “I’m fine, just a little fall,” she said in pain.

She came into my life when I was seven years old. My dad found her at work. She was wandering and starving. He took one look at her, and said, “Seems like you could use a good home.” He opened up the door and she jumped in. Her tail wagged (摇动) all the way. I was still at school when my dad arrived home with the puppy. Mum and dad fed her and gave her a bath. This would be my first pet. I had always wanted a dog. My parents told me when I was old enough and responsible, I could have one. Well, I guess they figured the time was right.

When I walked back home, a white and black puppy with a red bow stuck to her head greeted me with many puppy kisses. A wild joy took hold of me and a very special friendship was born that day.

Now she needed a name. My older brother laughed at her and said her tail didn’t wag back and forth like others, but went in a circle. He moved his finger around his ear, and said, “She’s squirrely.” Thus my puppy got her name, Squirrely.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开以语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Go home and ask your mummy about your blind brother! I am surprised you didn’t know that he is as blind as a bat!” Hearing Nathan’s words, I wanted to land a blow on him for making fun of my two-year-old brother, David, but I was more desperate (渴望的) to find out the truth.

With a misty (模糊的) vision, I ran home as fast as I could. Still out of breath, I questioned, “Is David blind?” Mother turned to me with tears in her eyes. “Yes, he’s born blind.” It was a heartbreaking moment. I knew clearly the dream of showing David my cool soccer moves or playing video games with him ended cruelly. “Why did you keep the truth from me? I often wondered why he didn’t look at me or why he was always tripping over (被绊倒) things and I thought it was because he was still too young...” Before I could continue any further, mother hugged me and cried, “I’m sorry, Caleb. Dad and I just didn’t know how to tell you.”

Suddenly, it struck me that David was blind but he could still hear the whole conversation. Not wanting him to be affected by it, I stopped crying and went forward and embraced him. “I love you so much, David.” Worry crept upon (开始影响) me: How hard life would be for him!

Little did I know that David was to inspire (鼓舞) me so greatly.

As David grew up, he was fairly strong-willed. Despite the challenges that he faced, he continued to attend the school for visually impaired (视力受损) children. He insisted he would take the bus home on his own. Often, he would walk through the main door, looking sheepish (不好意思的) and saying the same phrase, “Sorry Mum, I am late. I boarded the wrong bus again.”

Tough as life was, there was always silver lining (一线希望) of misfortune. Despite not being able to see, he could play a piece of music after listening to it, being played once on the piano. He even dreamed of playing solo (独奏) one day on stage. Luckily for him, the school had discovered David’s extraordinary (非凡的) talent.

At the center of the mall was the perfect Santa with a gentle manner and a real white beard. My six-year-old granddaughter, Leah, jumped from foot to foot as we waited in line for her turn to sit on his lap.

“I don’t know what to say,” Leah said, raising her neck around the kids in front of her.

“Sure you do.” her mother, Leanne, said. “It’s Santa. He’s already your friend. You’ll do just fine.”

“He’ll ask you what you want for Christmas.” I said. “And you just tell him.”

We’d gone over and over the toys she’d ask for. Her mother didn’t want surprises! Leah repeated the list. But a minute later, she inserted new toys she’d just spotted at the mall.

“I’ve got an idea,” said Leanne, digging into her purse as the line inched (缓慢移动) forward. “Let’s write down your requests so you won’t forget them.” I couldn’t help but laugh. Going to see Santa was such an important appointment for a six-year-old. No child should have any worries bigger than that. But the night before, on the news, I’d seen a village in the Middle East that had come under fire. Many of the wounded were children just like our Leah. Looking around the mall full of magical decorations and happy shoppers I felt safe, as safe as anyone could be. Everyone in the world should have that kind of security, especially at Christmas.

“Okay,” Leanne said. “Now you’ve got everything you want written down here. If you get nervous you can just give the note to Santa.”

Leah nodded and took the list. She read out loud, “A Chia Pet, Moon Sand and Aquadoodle.”

“Why don’t you add a fourth request, Leah,” I heard myself say. “Ask for peace on Earth.” My daughter looked a little surprised by my suggestion.

“What’s peace on Earth, Grandpa?” Leah asked.

“Peace on Earth means all the people in the world would get along. That’s the true meaning of Christmas.” Leah nodded seriously. “Yes,” she agreed.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The words every parent is afraid of hearing were spoken to me at my son’s bedside in our local hospital early last year. “Ma’am, your son is very sick.”

What began as stomach pains had turned into a loss of blood that landed him in the emergency room the night before. After testing, it was confirmed that my previously healthy and energetic son now had a colon (结肠) that was attacking itself. It would have to be removed.

Of course, money wasn’t the first thing on our minds. His survival was front and center. But over the next few days, as we waited out the lengthy process to get him transferred to a university hospital for surgery, it suddenly began to dawn on me: How would we pay for this? We had insurance, but it was the bare minimum that we could afford. This was happening at the beginning of the year, so our first and most terrifying crisis was meeting the shocking $7,500 deductible (免赔额).

To some families, this might not seem like much. But we are just an average-income family and coming up with that amount of money at once was next to impossible.

I tried to put it out of my mind and keep all my focus on my son and his health. We had a long road ahead of us and stressing over something beyond my control was not going to help the situation at hand.

But, still, it was there.

On one of those endless hospital nights waiting for his transfer, I was texting my good friend Vanessa and let that figure slip: $7,500. I knew there would be many bills to come, but that first seemingly unattainable number kept floating around in my mind. She sympathized and let me get out my fear and frustrations like the great friend she is. Then we said good night, and I tried to get some sleep.

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks.

One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it a secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.

Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.

The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided(碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.

Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead.
